I've got a battery that doesn't show up when inserted. I assume it's
dead.
It's the only battery I have for this wallstreet. It's been stored
for

several years, was fine before that.

Is there any utility that might get the computer to try charging it?
I'm
just wondering if maybe the charge has dropped so low that the
computer
doesn't recognise it, but perhaps if given some juice it may still
have a
little life in it.

There used to be a little utility from Apple called, I believe,
BatteryReset, which would just reset the little chip on the battery
so
that the battery would communicate with the Wallstreet that it's OK to
charge. Not sure where it is on the Apple download site, though...

Battery Reset only works with batteries that still have at least a
trace charge in them. If the WS can't see the battery in the bay
it's too dead to be revived. Sad but true -- LiIons that are stored
for too long without at least a 30-40% charge will die. I've never
even heard of any external charger/conditioner that will revive a LiIon
once it's reached this state; has anyone else actually saved one of
these...?

I thought I should respond to this in case others read it while
researching a solution to the same problem. I took Paul up on his kind
offer and he quickly sent me the battery reset utility. It worked
perfectly on the first try, and the battery charged for hours while I
used the computer. I'm waiting on new hinges for the wallstreet so I've
removed the display to protect the ribbon cables and am using an
external monitor instead. After the battery was fully charged, I went
on the net with the internal modem and the hard drive running
constantly, and it lasted for 2 hours 55 minutes.

I realize it won't last nearly as long when the display is back on, but
I'm happy nonetheless. :)

Thanks to all,
Andrew

Thanks. The battery reset has proven that the battery won't hold
more than 14%. It's time to get a new one. I also see that they are
at Ebay (buy it now) for $85.

Maybe they *should*, but on my Pismo both the original Apple battery and

that's the same battery as on the Wallstreet, though. Now if
LaptopsBatteries.com has the NewerTechnology battery for the Pismo at
that price, I'm interested (the NT battery is a 5400ma-hour battery
supposedly, vs. the original Apple's 4800ma-hour). The Newer Tech battery
is supposed to last longer between charges (so in theory, it should last
longer total time).

Anyone out there who has the NewerTech battery and has used it for a
longer period of time (and can report their experiences for the list and
me)?

Thanks,

Jim Rohde

Life would be so much easier if I had the source code...

Re: Do Wallstreet batteries last longer than a year?

2003-11-08 Thread David Ensteness
They should last longer. Don't pay $150 the next time.
LaptopsBatteries.com
has them for $104...

I just looked on that website and the best deal I saw one Wallstreet
batteries was close to $200 ...

Greetings(!) ... and a question about Wallstreet batteries

2003-10-22 Thread COCCORP
Hi,

Long-time Powerbook user (everything from Portable on up!) and I have FINALLY
obtained a Wallstreet I Powerbook!

I got it for a few dollars, because it had been damaged by the previous
owner. I rebuild old 1xx, 5xx, Duos and 1400s in my spare time, so I figured I
could do the same w/ my Wallstreet...

and WAS IT EASY (w/ the manual)! Wow... Alot easier than a 5300!

But NOW I have a question regarding the battery. At first, it started
charging the battery. S-l-o-w-l-y, but it did it. Then, when it was about 3/4 done, I
unplugged the AC, and the battery ran the Powerbook. Did it again...

...but this time the Powerbook shut down!

After which, the Powerbook now refuses to startup w/ the battery installed.
When I try to startup, the computer does the usual chime, then it does nothing.
The sleep indicator blinks twice every 5-10 seconds - not at all as fast as
when it is asleep - and that is it. I remove the battery, and it starts up just
fine...

THEN, when I install the battery in either bay, my Wallstr... uh, WS (see? I
am learnin' already!) does not see the battery. I don't mean it does not
charge it, or use its power; it does not even think a battery is in there!

When I install the cd-rom in the right bay, the WS sees it and uses it. When
I install the floppy drive in EITHER bay, the WS sees it and uses it!

SO what is going on here? Could it be the card with the contacts on it in the
expansion bays? OR the charge card in front of it? Since they charged the
battery for awhile, I wonder what could have made them go bad? All I did was
unplug the AC adapter while the WS was on...

THanks, and glad 2 B here...

Yup!

That did it! Thanks a Million!

('cause that is what I would have spent NEEDLESSLY on a new WS battery!)
