2006-01-19 Thread Peter Saint James

with desiring something better than 1152x768 resolution, I wonder
how many of us could cope with high resolution on small screens as
we advance in age? I keep looking at a new 12 powerbook, but keep
fretting about whether my eyesight would cope with font sizes
beyond comfortable continuous use. If the new intel ibooks are
rumoured to go to higher resolution smaller screens, us baby
boomers may be left behind.

I use 896x600 on a 15-inch powerbook fairly successfully.

A few apps want a different resolution, but not many. I don't use
many graphics apps, however.

The only problems I've had are that the menu bars or apps with
column format sometimes get crowded. Also if I have to paste text
from one app to another, sometimes I have to adjust the text size,
but I suppose that would happen no matter what.

When at home, I use a remote keyboard and have the powerbook about
three or four feet away from me. I find this set-up much better than
having a screen a few inches from my face.

hehehehehe. Yea.

How about using the built in zoom function of OS X?

Doesn't work during the installs, after the monitor was forced to the
higher res.

I already run my 17 monitor at 832x624, and often hit make text
bigger in Safari.

Installing OS X and apps was problematic. Kept running into dialogs
that displayed off the bottom of the screen; couldn't reach the
buttons! And sometimes, it forced the monitor to 1024x768 - so I had
to use a magnifying glass.

There are apps and system pref panes that are very difficult to use
-- they have dialogs with controls that end up below the bottom edge
of the screen. And since you cannot move a window up, in OS X...

Frustrating.
Never had this problem with OS 9.

Are literally using a magnifying glass? How about using the built in
zoom function of OS X? It may take some getting used to it, but I have
found it valuable.

I'm using Panther, so here are my instructions:
Go to System Preferences-Universal Access-Seeing-Turn On Zoom

In this window you will see the key commands for zooming in and out. I
have my 15-inch PowerBook set to its native resolution of 1280 X 854.

Also, in Safari's prefs you can set a default text size that will work
for most websites.

2006-01-10 Thread Bryan Taylor

Hi,

Dan's article about his 400MHz tibook is a parallel to my 667MHz VGA
model. Including worn paint, marked screen from the keyboard and
although I agree with desiring something better than 1152x768
resolution, I wonder how many of us could cope with high resolution
on small screens as we advance in age? I keep looking at a new 12
powerbook, but keep fretting about whether my eyesight would cope

Roll on tomorrows keynote..
