Re: iBook key pops off

2004-05-12 Thread Sharon Kantanie
Thanks to everyone for the advice. Unfortunately, the shift keycap has
a metal bar, and fitting it into the matching area on the keyboard
proved extra tricky. I found a picture on the Apple website of the
procedure for replacing a keycap on a Powerbook, and the area where the
bar fits in seems more substantial. On the iBook, there are just little
metal loops where the bar slips in. I can get the keycap into the
loops, but something just doesn't seem right. At least I've established
that I'm pretty sure nothing is broken.

I'm planning on throwing myself at the mercy of our local Mac specialty
store and hoping they'll fix it on the spot without charge.

It makes me miss the keyboard of my Wallstreet II. It seemed more
subsantial, and I can't imagine keys just popping off like this.

If by key you mean the keycap, I've actually manually replaced the full
set of keys of a few Lombard and TiBook keyboards and I found the
procedure pretty easy. The mechanism is the same in both, so I would
assume it also apply to the iBook, although I do not know for sure. To
try it out, pop off a key (for ex. the fn key at the lower-left corner)
this way: push the lower edge of the key (gently but do apply some
strength) towards the upper end of the keyboard, horizontally and lifting
a bit up. As it snaps out from the scissor mechanism at the lower end,
pry it up rotating around upper edge that is still held by the
"scissors". You will then see how the keycap is held at the upper edge.
To replace the keycap, begin seating it in place at the upper edge, push
it down, finally snap it in place pressing it firmly at the lower end.

By "lower" and "upper" edge I mean the edges that are respectively closer
to the palmrest and closer to the display.

cheers, gianfranco

It was the tab key on minethe scissor mechanism has two tiny tabs
that snap onto the actual key and one of them broke off. I fixed it by
filing the broken part off straight and then inserting a heated push
pin into the scissor. Then I cut it off at about the right length and
it works well now.
And no, they aren't the same as Pismo/Lombard key mechanisms, I saw
that note here a couple of months ago and bought a defective keyboard
to use them. Alas, I ended up with the other replacement.

Re: iBook key pops off

2004-05-11 Thread Thomas Ethen
I replaced the key on my daughters Clamshell iBook which has the scissors
mechanism and it was an interesting experience getting the new key back on.
It would have been even more difficult if the keys had not been translucent
so I could see what I was doing.

You have to slide the front part of the scissors mechanism into place first,
then while holding it, place the back part of the mechanism into the two
holes on the keyboard one at a time. Dental tools work well to get under the
key, without dislodging the front and to hook each of the back arms to
direct them into the holes at the back.

Good luck!!

I'm not sure if the keys on an iBook are the same than on a Pismo but if
they are, they can be difficult to put back, specially the "scissor"
mechanism. If you're comfortable with this, try to pry out another key very
carefully. Check how the scissor is setup. That should show you how you have
to position it under the keycap to put it back.

I purchased the Apple key for a Clam Shell iBook from these people on ebay
and it came with detailed instructions with photo's (It seemed a bit more
complicated than the directions stated, but worked out well) and was fairly
inexpensive compared to replacing the entire keyboard.

Make sure the mechanism is laying flat, it should pop right back on.
You might want to carefully pop off another to look at the scissor
mechanism.

PBParts (http://www.pbparts.com) offers keyboard parts and keycaps;
just search for "keyboard" or "keycaps." Shipping is more than the
cost of a single key, but maybe there's something else you need;
anyway, it's cheaper than buying a whole new keyboard.
