I believe that you need at least a 600MHz G3 to use video chat.

No, you would actually need more speed. iChat AV requires a G3 processor of
at least 600MHz. I'm using the shareware iChatUSBCam from Ecamm Network at
Ecamm.com to remove this limitation.

iChat AV on Pismo

2003-06-30 Thread Steven Schwartz
Mike,
I tried iChat AV on my B&W tower (G3, 400mHz) with my JVC digital movie
camera. No go.
The same setup worked flawlessly on my 17" Powerbook.
It appears that the program will only enable the video portion if it
sees a processor faster than the 600 MHz G3.

Subject: iChat AV and iSight, with a Pismo?
From: "Michael J. Granado" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Message-Id: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Just wanted to know if anyone has tried using iChat AV (and maybe the
iSight or any other firewire camera) with a NON-upgraded Pismo G3
400mhz with 640MB RAM? The minimum requirements say 600mhz on Apple's
Website. Just wanted to know what you guys have found out. Any info
would be most appreciated. Thanks.

I have tried it. I have a Sharp FW camera which works fine in iMovie and
FCP, but iChat AV refuses stubbornly to use the camera. Something like this
computer doesn't support video chat...

One-way video chats are available if both buddies have cameras

I tried to one way with a buddy, but the option to invite to one-way
video chat is dimmed, and what kind of sense does this make"One-way
video

the option to one-way might be dimmed due to my cpu, i'm using a pismo
with the g4 500mhz upgrade.
You can do one-way video if only one iChat AV user has a webcam. I
know.
I did it.

That said, if you have any type of firewall or your buddy does, you
need
to open the right ports for the audio and video signals to get through.
We posted an article about it on Low End Mac yesteray:
the need for port mapping through a firewall is not universal. some
routers will need this, but since the audio and video streams are UDP
traffic, many firewalls will let the traffic through.

if both people are behind firewalls, though... then portmapping is
definitely needed.
