Re. you memory upgrade, you may have 2 x 128MB installed, so be aware that
by adding a 512MB module you would end up with 640MB and not 768MB.
You can check your ram configuration under Apple System Profiler in the
Apple menu (top left of the screen).

Good luck.

Re. you memory upgrade, you may have 2 x 128MB installed

Thanks for the warning, but it has 1 x 256MB, with one slot open. I'm still
wondering who buys the 'low power' RAM? I'm interested because the main
reason I bought the Pismo is to do fanless audio recording, and although I
really don't want to pay 2 or 3 times the going rate for RAM, I do want to
do what I can to keep the fan from coming on. But I assume the 'low power'
refers more to battery drain than heat generated.

Thanks for your reply. Did you put your original drive in an external
Firewire enclosure? I'm thinking of putting my OEM 10 GB drive in a
 cutie
 enclosure from Firewire Depot.

That's a cool enclosure. I would have gotten one like it, but i sold
the drive on the swaplist. :-)

New Pismo Owner - G4, Upgrade Questions

2002-12-30 Thread Stephen Bright
Hello, I am a new Pismo 400MHz/256/10 GB/DVD owner ($700) and this is my
first post to this list. I am migrating to the Pismo from a Umax s900 to do
fanless (hopefully) audio reccording via Firewire (MOTU 828) interface. And
I am interested in getting some feedback about Pismo upgrades.

1) G4 upgrade. I was planning on going Powerlogix, mainly because it is only
$279 for Austin TX, residents. Any reason to prefer Newer?

2) Ram upgrade. I was planning on getting 1 new 512 MB stick from OWC. Any
reasons to consider the much more expensive low power RAM?

3) CD upgrade. Looking at the IBM 40 GB Travelstar 5400/8 MB cache. Any
thoughts on what may be a better choice?

Thanks in andvance for any help from more experienced users.

Best,
Stephen

Re: New Pismo Owner - G4, Upgrade Questions

I had a similarly configured Pismo and did all 3 upgrades. Here's my
thoughts on each:

I did the Powerlogix upgrade. When I first got it back, it crashed a
lot, so (after a week of testing it) I sent it back to Powerlogix. It
turned out to be a bad G4 chip. Since getting it back, it's been
running great, and noticeably faster under OSX.

 2) Ram upgrade. I was planning on getting 1 new 512 MB stick from OWC.
 Any
reasons to consider the much more expensive low power RAM?
I got the 512 chip from OWC (not the low power one) and it's been fine.
I have 1GB in the Pismo now.
