Look in System Preferences under Universal Access. See if any
assistive devices are on.

PS: The above sentence highlights another situation where the
folks at Apple missed opportunities to communicate with each other.
The word assistive is used in System Preferences, but spell checker
maintains that it is not a word.

odd key behavior

2005-07-16 Thread Claire Hart
I had two questions in my last post. This list's input helped me with
the first question, but here's the second one again:

I have inadvertently changed a preference of some sort. When I strike
any of the lower corner keys once (such as shift, fn, ctrl, option, and
control), it makes a manual typewriter noise, as if you are locking in
the shift key, and causes that key's symbol to appear on the screen.
When I hit it a second time, it makes another manual typewriter noise,
and causes that key's symbol to be a bolder white. A third strike
causes it to disappear. Also, the strike of any other key causes it to
disappear as well. I can't find any info on this. It is not num lock.
The noise is very irritating, and the changed action of these keys is
messing me up as well. What did I do to cause this? I've looked in
System Preferences under Keyboard Mouse, but can't find anything that
seems to be related.

Thanks,
Claire

Re: gray frame around screen; odd key behavior

2005-07-15 Thread Claire Hart

Has anyone noticed a gray frame that sometimes appears peripherally
around the screen=3F It's translucent gray border about a half inch
wide
and either on all four edges or on the sides and top. (It's gone
right

now, so I don't exactly remember if it's at the bottom, where my dock
happens to be right now.) I wonder if it's a prompt of some kind. I
haven't yet seen that pattern of strokes or conditions that causes it
to appear or go away.

It sounds like Expos=E9 in action. Do you get the same thing when you
press F11=3F You could check your Expos=E9 pref pane to see what the
keyboard shortcuts are set to.

TimH

Yes, that was it. I didn't know what it meant. Thanks, Tim.

It sounds like Exposé in action. Do you get the same thing when you

gray frame around screen; odd key behavior

These two are not related, as the frame shows up very occasionally, and
the clicky key thing just started about thirty minutes ago and is
driving me crazy.

Help (as usual),
Claire
