third-party power adaptor
Hi, I asked this question yesterday, but as an addendum to a not-really- related topic, so it may have been overlooked. I've just bought a Micro Accessories power adaptor for my pismo. It's this one, from OWC: http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6431Item=MICACADPTG3 This is sold as a Powerbook G3 adaptor, and I was told that it is suitable for a pismo, but I noticed that it's rated at 65W, whereas the original Apple adaptor is 45W. I'm fairly sure this is not a problem, but before I barbecue my Powerbook, can anyone confirm that? thanks, TimH -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: third-party power adaptor
The power rating simply indicates how much current the adapter can supply without burning out. Using a higher-rated power supply is fine; if anything, it will lead to fewer adapter heat problems. Ah, thanks for that Ben. As a supposedly techno-literate person, I really should understand the basics a bit better :) On Thu, Jan 20, 2005 at 10:48 am +1100, Ben Dyer wrote: The power rating simply indicates how much current the adapter can supply without burning out. Re: third-party power adaptor
When I bought my newest powerbook, the Genius at the Apple Store told me that I could use any of the adaptors interchangeably with any of my currently in use 'books (a wallstreet 300, TiBook 667, AlBook 12 1.33, AlBook 15 1.5) (as long as the connection fits) except for the 15 which needs a 65W adapter. I have 2 45W apple adapters, 2 65 W apple adapters and a Madsonline 65 W adapter. I'm fairly sure this is not a problem, but before I barbecue my Powerbook, can anyone confirm that? No problem at all. If the adapter supplies 24vdc at the amperage you need, any reserve capacity is gravy. Note that using a 45W on a 65W book is unlikely to be fatal as well. a) The PSU only works hard when BOTH recharging a dead battery and running the book. b) They are switcher supplies; if you DO attempt to pull too much current, it will do two things: get a little warm and reduce its output voltage. As a result, the laptop battery will recharge slowly, or maybe just keep up. One of the 3rd party suppliers [?iGo? maybe] tells you that. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: third-party power adaptor
No, no problem. Current and power, when indicated on the adapter itself, are to be treated as maximum ratings (there's normally a bit of wiggle room, though). So, the *actual* current and *actual* power output will be determined by the load. Cheers, Ben On 21 Jan 2005, at 01:36, Tim Hodgson wrote: OK, many thanks. That leads to one last question! That is because the voltage isn't regulated and if you don't load it enough the voltage is actually quite a bit above the rated value. Depending on the load, this could do some damage. This DOESN'T apply with the these Apple power adapters as they are regulated. The simple wallwarts that sell wholesale for $1-2 each are not. There, the above is true to some extent. Anytime the 'adapter' is: a) Dual voltage in [120-240v'] and/or b) greater than 30 watts out c) in a flat skinny case; it's bound to be a switching supply regulated. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
