You may be right, but I've never heard of it!!!

You may be thinking of .Mac as a 'pay' operation.

PowerMac G4 Sawtooth Upgrades

2008-10-06 Thread Jasiu

I have two hard drives in my 400 MHZ Sawtooth G4. One is piggybacked
on top of a smaller one. The larger one apparently took a dive,
because the system doesn't see it and the machine makes a "accessing-
type sound". My question is how difficult isd it to change out this
drive. Is it just a matter of unplugging the cables and removing the
4 small screws that are on the sides? I guess I am limited to 128
GB. How do I format the new drive? How difficult is it to change the
processor? I have 1.5 gigs of RAM

Be careful. I use the Griffin ADB converter to run an ADB keyboard on my G4 so

Many installers run through an optimization phase. This has nothing to
do with disk optimization, it's a matter of setting up various files for
the application being installed. Could this be what it meant by "Optimize"?

On the other hand it does sound like it mucked things up. Are you sure
you are not logged in now as a different user. That would account for
what you describe.

At this point, I'd do some checking outside your place. What happens
with a neighbor's computer, whether a Mac or PC? Find another Mac
with Safari and Firefox which ties to the same ISP as yours. Try your
own machine at another place which uses a different ISP than yours.

I'm STILL not able to load Canon POTN with Safari nor Firefox. I'm of
the mind that if the site had 'blocked' me, I wouldn't be receiving

I'm confused, a lot.

I can't even figure out to email the site to see if I'm blocked

Can anyone get me an email address of an admin at the site?

Interactive software: image drop?

2008-10-06 Thread RediG3-5

mini G4
OS 10.4.11

I'm looking/hoping for software that will create
an interactive form where the user can drag and drop in image.

For example, the user would receive a printable calendar where they
could drag and drop inn their own photo in the photo field.

I'd hoped that this could be done in pdf, but it does not seem
possible in Acrobat.

Maybe it could be done in a stand alone Filemaker File?

Suggestions appreciated

Any brand recommendations you have used for something similar?

HP Scanner optomized my HD

2008-10-06 Thread Doctor K

Hi, I ran an installation disc for a HP scanner last night, and before
I knew what was happening, it "optomized" my hard drive for me. I
wasn't able to stop it. Now all my desktop has been rebuilt,
eliminating all the alias' and other icons that were on it, all
bookmarks in Safari are lost, as well as several other large folders
that were on the disc.
Any suggestions as to how I can find those folders? The disc space
looks like they are still there somewhere, but the finder doesn't find
them.
Thanks

Have you tried re-installing iDVD again? Perhaps the iMovie6 re-
install screwed it up.

iLife '08 comes with a coupon, password, something, that'll let you
download a version of iMovie 6 that works with it.

Re: Keyboard Washing

2008-10-06 Thread Charles Davis

Hi Simon;

A good rinse with 'methanol' (methyl alcohol) would be helpful. The
only caution on the methanol use, would be that it is also a solvent,
it may affect 'keytop markings'.

[The methanol absorbs the water molecules and carries them away.]

Lacking methanol availability, I'd go for a couple of days 'Sun Drying'.

iDVD not loading

2008-10-06 Thread Christopher Icha

Hi

My iDVD 7 has refused to work ever since I tried to reinstall iMovie
6. I upgraded my Ali iMac to Leopard when it first came out and to my
horror, iMovie HD 6 had been phased out. I had no intention of using
iMovie 8 which is a different product, so I reinstalled 6 since I had
the commercial package. Since then iDVD 7 has refused to work, which
didn't bother me at the time as I didn't use it anyway. However, now
that I'm doing a lot of burning and authoring, I could do with it.

iDVD 7 loads OK, brings up the themes, and then suddenly quits.
Anyone got any ideas of how I can get it going short of purchasing 08?
I've tried trashing prefs and even reinstalling Leopard to no avail.

Need Help - Don't know where to get it!

2008-10-06 Thread aussieshepsrock

Hello, I have an Off-Topic issue that's confounding my efforts to
figure it out. I am a member of a Photography website known as Canon
Digital Photography On The Net. It's a Forum type of thing (based on
vb Bulletin ?) and I very much enjoyed visiting and learning things
there.

the prob: the site will not load in my browser anymore. I get a page
load error. "http://www.photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php"; is my
bookmark address.
(it may contain an error of some kind, but none of the links I find on
google work either)

the question: how do I find out if the 'site' exists anymore?

Further Info:

I still receive occassional emails from the site relating to my being
subscribed to a michigan related forum, so I assume the 'site' exists
in some form some where, but I just can't get to it. I did try a link
from within the email, but it didn't work either.

I did a search engine look for info about the site being 'gone' but
didn't turn up anything. None of the links from Google, Ask, and
Yahoo, worked either.

I'm confused because the site seemed to have a 'relatively' huge user
base ranging across the US, Canada, Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.
I also have received aproximately 4 emails from the 'site' since my
page load errors appeared. It's not adding up.

The site also has a Nikon permutation and a general one as well. The
general term for the site within the users is POTN and is how I find
it in google when I'm away from my home browser.

thanks all
Richard

1. Shake it and spin your self as much as you can to try to get the water to
move out.
2. Use hair dryer on LOW SETTING or cold. You can make the air flow a bit
faster by putting a paper funnel on the end of the dryer to increase the air
speed. If you have power air this is the time to use it - go visit the gas
station.
3. Put the keyboard in the oven set on very low WITH A TEMP CHECK AT 110 and
store 24 hours
4. You will be good to use it now.

BTW: Coke is bad for the kids, so you can make nice juces much better for them.

Also be sure you have upgraded to to proper firmware -- 4.2.8 iirc, I'm not at
my DA now so I can't check the exact version. This should be documented in the
installation manual. --glen

FWIW, I put the 120GB from my beige G3 with 10.2.8 into my DA and have
done archive and installs with every OS up to 10.5. 10.3 and 10.4 were
performed with a QS 933MHz processor in my DA and 10.5 was with a dual
1.2 from OWC installed. Unless my memory is failing me completely (and
with 4 ales at the Renaissance Festival today and hitting 50 in 3
weeks you never know), I have not had any install issues.

I have never disconnected any drive controller card (Acard 133 ide in
10.2, 3 and 4 and a Seritek SATA in 10.5) or any other driveconnected
to the MB or one of the cards for any install.

I see no reason to unplug any add on drives. As long as I was doing an
install, I might take an additional 30 minutes and install a backup OS
on one of the other drives that has copies of any utilities you may
need in case of an emergency.

I've hard drives "go" bad ... and they started by re-Reading things,
evidently trying to confirm what it has Read, or get a good Read, or
to "Open a folder" gives you a spinning beach ball ... it does take
extra time ... quite noticeable ... Startups give you "Waiting for
Apple File Management" or something like that ...

... and yes, they failed.

Haven't we been there ... before? ;)

I dry things out in a somewhat sealed off small room that has a

Tech guru Leo Laporte has mentioned this very issue on many of his shows.
He has even done it himself, although his cleaning solution was to use the
dishwasher (who knew keyboards would be dishwasher safe?). In any case,
he's always recommended the longest drying period possible, in excess of 5
days, or more.

Keyboard Washing

2008-10-06 Thread Simon Royal

Hi

My kids managed to split a can of Coke over my white Apple keyboard
yesterday. So I washed it this morning in a sink fully of warm bubbly
water.

Besides the Coke it had gotten very grubby so it needs a good clean anyway.

Obviously it needs to be dried thoroughly before plugging back in, it is
hanging on the washing at the moment but will put it in the airing cupboard
later.

How long should I give it to dry out. I want to make sure it is fully dry -
lucky I have a spare keyboard.

Re: Gmail Question

2008-10-06 Thread gifutiger

Greetings ( + )!( + )

Steve you should create (in mail preferences) a "Rule" that tells mail
what to do with the mail that you don't want put into SPAM.
You should also put it at the top of the list, and be sure to uncheck
the box in the preferences menu "Junk Mail" that says "Trust junk mail
headers set by my Internet Services Provider" and also the one that
says "Filter junk mail before applying my rules" other wise the rule
that you create won't take effect.
