I've copied MP3s from and to my file server lots of timee and I don't
recall any case of file corruption. This is using normal Finder file copy.

.DS_Store files are where OS X stores metadata for the Finder, what
view you have of the volume, etc.

You can safely delete it, but it'll come right back...

I've had the same problem with copying MP3 files, especially over a
network. All of my music library is safely on my file server and
from there they play fine, but recently I copied the library over to
a computer which is normally not connected to the network for playing
when the network is not available. After listening to the files
being played from that system I can tell there is some copy
corruption. Which begs the question, why? Does it have to do with
the nature of the MP3 files themselves (being compressed and all), or
is the computer copying procedure suspect?

I have one on one port on each side of the Mac.

Maybe I could find my 4th one and plug it in. Lord only knows where I

I think you're right. I thought these were songs I'd copied from
vinyl, but at least the one I'm looking at now was indeed ripped from
a CD. In Amadeus I can see that it's messed up. I'm pretty sure

copied that partition back from a back-up, so I guess it got
corrupted in the copying process at one point or another.

What threw me is that iTunes would play like it was stuck (toggling
back and forth over the same second). In VLC and Amadeus it doesn't
do that. It actually plays through the entire track, but the sound is
all messed up.

Thanks,

Correction: NEC D720101GJ is the number on the NEC chip, as someone
reported in a recent reply about their NEC card.

Seems to be working under Leopard 10.5.7. I had a Nikon Coolscan 5000
(and/or Kodak 6-In-1), Olympus Voice Recorder, and Yamaha motif es8
USB/MIDI all connected and they communicated fine along with iTunes
blaring away through the adjacent M-Audio 2496 PCI card.

I do not use Sleep, as the M-Audio doesn't support it ... and also I
always try to turn off all devices, and/or drag them to the
Disconnect before I shut down.

iTunes needle stuck

2009-05-19 Thread joe
I've been having the weirdest iTunes problem. On certain songs, it
"sticks" --it will literally play the same roughly 1 second part of a
track over and over again. The timeline display toggles back and
forth (like between 1:46 and 1:47 for example).

I haven't checked into it much, but my impression is that it does it
only on certain tracks and at the same position--but not always (I
think). I think it happens when my CPU is being taxed pretty hard,
but I'm not sure.

I haven't yet looked at the problem tracks in Amadeus II or some such
to see if they're damaged.

I just wanted to see if anyone has even heard of such a thing. I
think I have dust on my virtual needle!

I'm using the latest version of iTunes 8 on OS 10.4.11 with
everything up-to-date.

I just wanted to add a bit and a tiny backtracking. I found this
card:
 with
the same chipset but it has six ports instead of two. Depending on
how the chipset and the card implements the additional ports, it may
be that cards with the same chipset but different numbers of ports
could behave differently. For example, if there is an internal PCI-
PCI bridge or built-in USB hub used in the chipset to implement the
additional ports, it could have issues with sleep that you wouldn't
see on the two-port version of the card.

No solid knowledge there, just speculating on another factor that
could make a difference. My solid knowledge is that in my experience
the two-port PCI card based on that NEC chipset is solid with sleep
and wake-up.

While I do agree that a hub is the best bet in this case, I've had
good luck with this PCI USB 2.0 card in the MDD under Tiger:
. The chipset is
NEC D720101GJ and any card with the same chipset should be virtually
identical because the card makers usually build them to the chip
manufacturer's reference design for that chipset.

That's the chipset that my research of postings here and on
XLR8yourmac.com seemed to indicate was the best bet.

I've been using that card in an MDD for almost two years now with
(almost) no sleep issues. The 'almost' is because I can't get our two
card readers to work with sleep (actually don't work with wakeup), but
that's a problem whether they're on the PCI card or on the built-in
USB. My solution is just not leave card readers plugged in when I'm
not using them.

We also use this Young Micro four port powered hub plugged into the
PCI card without problems: . The only inconvenience is that
attached disks throw a "This disk was not put away properly" or some
such at wakeup. This happens because the disk doesn't come back up
fast enough and operating system throws the message before the disk
finishes reconnecting. But the disk reattaches fine. The only
inconvenience is clicking away the premature message.

That Young Micro hub seems to work very well with sleep. At least,
the little blue indicator LED goes off during sleep, and come back on
at wakeup, so it seems to actually *do something* and recognize the
difference between the conditions.

I realize both of the links I provided are out of stock, but those
items may be available elsewhere and the NEC chipset may be available
in other cards.

I like that particular hub because it is very compact, it is powered,
and it is rectangular instead of some weird shape that won't fit well
into a desk space. Oh, and it doesn't have a bunch of extraneous
lights to irritate one. Just the single indicator LED. I bought a
hub on Ebay once which puts on a non-stop light show. Try sleeping
with that thing in the room.

Check system log for the actual error messages.

Most likely there wasn't enough power to run all the devices, so
things began to fail. You might need to use a powered hub.

Re: Flash Drive Issue

2009-05-19 Thread yersinia

Stephen Conrad and Bill Connelly write:

It could also be your flash drive, too. Is it shielded? Not knowing the
difference between shielded and unshielded at the I bought my second
flash drive, I ended up with one of each -- my original shielded 1 GB
and the unshielded 8 GB one I bought a year later. The unshielded one is
hard to solidly plug into either the USB hub on my QS -- or USB
extension which it stopped running from but used to ("not enough
power"), or eithe of my iBook's USB ports. Because my 8 GB flash drive
lacks the shielding, it's thinner and has to stay very still -- it's
loose anywhere I plug it in, whereas my shielded 1 GB flash drive ALWAYS
plugs in easy/nicely fitted, no matter where I'm using it, and never
comes loose. I can even pick up the iBook and walk across the room with
it with the 1 GB flash drive in. I wouldn't dare do that with the 8GB
flash drive in it! I'm almost sorry I bought the thing, but I do
occasionally need to "sneakernet" more files than will fit on the 1 GB,
and 8 GB will fit both my Sims games and a few extra folders.

Um, OK: how to tell if your flash drive is shielded or not: Look at the
part where you plug it into a USB hub. If it's "surrounded" by metal on
all sides, it's shielded. If it isn't, and you only see the thin
"square" sticking out, metal on one side (looks kind of like a circuit
pattern on it)/plastic on the other, that's unshielded.

Sorry I don't know the actual technical term for the part of a flash
drive you plug into the port -- I also don't know the technical term for
this "thingie" my boyfriend has which provides a shield for unshielded
flash drives...he's got this thingie plugged into one of his USB
extensions. That's the only place my 8 GB ever plugged in solidly and
didn't have to be kept absolutely still.

Someone else might be able to provide proper names for all this, right?
If anyone can, please do!

~Yersinia.
