Yeah, part of my point. Little content other than a push toward favored
solution sellers. I did mention my media studies, right? Had the article
been thick with logic and reasoning I would have thought the intent really
was to give users a heads up for recovery archiving. I do not blame you.
This is what passes on the net for serious journalism these days. Thinly
veiled sales pitches. Only one step up from " hey , Senor, you want to see

Perfectly true of course Adrian like Bruces' comments but I think the good
thing about threads like this every now and again is that it reminds everyone
to have a backup strategy in place and to implement it.
I have been amazed at how many companies I have come in contact with ( I am not
an IT pro just an enthusiastic amateur who seems to be the fixit guy for
friends , neighbours etc ) that have no backups in place and they include a

The key questions to ask yourself:

How much is my stuff worth to me?

How much will it cost me to recreate all of it?

If your answer to the second question involved financing research into

Besides, corporations, Google and the Internet Archive are keeping the

Go into the main users Library/Calendar folder (hereafter referred to
as ~/Library), make sure iCal is not running and move the contents of
the folder somewhere else.

Now do the same for the contents of ~/Library/Application Support/iCal

second hardisc is not the solution if time travel needs for your rescue...

i lost 3 TB data because of electric problem in Turkey...

Those discs are backuped internal other 3 TB

And yes i got good UPS

But all of them gone...

Remote backup or just a handy external HD is the answer...

I use Time Machine with 24 hours backup intervals with 1.5 TB External

Temperature controlled garage? Burned optical media are quite temp &
humidity sensitive.

No. Sounds like a decent strategy to me.

Everyone should keep a set of backups off-site; even if it's just
stashed in a friend's sock drawer.

RE: Backups? !!!

2009-11-09 Thread Stewie de Young

I personally install a second hard drive in all my desktop computers .
This is so I can perform maintenance tasks by booting up from the second hard
drive and for more importantly , backing up my data off the primary drive.
Then I hitch up my Firewire drive and back up to that as well. I do this at the
end of every day.
At the end of each week I lug my partners FW drive around and back up all my
data to that as well , returning that to her the following morning.
When I have enough data to fill a DVD or CD I burn that to disc and store it in
her garage, usually wiping the data off her drive.
A bit too far you think - maybe, but I have had a few hard drive failures and
seen a lot of Raid arrays go South in the past as well as numerous fires and
theft from homes and businesses.
I have also had a friend who suffered a lightning strike on his home and apart
from his stereo and TV being fried, lost his computer with two internal drives
and two connected external hard drives. No recovery possible. All his data from
7+ years gone - family photos , songs , client records.
Have I ever lost any of my or clients data - yes, but I have always been able
to restore it from a backup.

Set and reset both within iCal and System Prefs. No change. I really
need to be able to enter time begin and time end. I guess I'll pull

Ummm... I have witnessed irrevocable data loss from each and every one
of those scenarios.

The key questions to ask yourself:

How much is my stuff worth to me?

How much will it cost me to recreate all of it?

If your answer to the second question involved financing research into
practical methods of time travel, you need a better backup strategy.

Besides, corporations, Google and the Internet Archive are keeping the
hard drive industry afloat. Drive sales to individual users are a
vanishingly small segment of the industry.

Re: Multiple HDs & os x

2009-11-09 Thread Mel
Download CCC (Carbn Copy Cloner) and use CCC.  It should do what you want.

Better, buy a used 50 pin IDE HD of lets say 40GB to 60GB.  You can usually buy
these for under $35.00 shipped.  Format that slave HD with two partitions.  Use
CCC to copy from your Master 40GB HD to one of the partitions.  Use CCC to copy
form your 12GB HD to the same partition.  Then boot from that slave HD,

Etc.

If it works, you will have an extra HD and can use the 12GB as a backup drive
with OS 10.4.11 installed on it.
