Apple has never made a Mac Pro with Core2Duo processors; they've always used
Xeon multicore systems, all of which have always supported 64-bit applications;
the only Intel systems that ARE NOT supported for 64-bits are the original
CoreDuo Intel iMacs.

You cannot boot the 64-bit KERNEL in the first gen Mac Pros, but 64-bit APPS
will run.

Picky picky picky 8-P Yes, there are those as well. Any Mac with a Core
processor that isn't a Core 2 will not run 64-bit OS X. That said there are no
Mac Pros like that.

Bac to ds's original post, it seems clear that the 64-bit restriction on
MacPros is only in software:

see:

http://www.ahatfullofsky.comuv.com/English/Programs/SMS/SMS.html

Also this excellent site offers a simple workaround, since a 32-bit EFI
firmware system can boot a 64-bit kernel without issues:

http://netkas.org/?p=127

Editing one plist file may be all that's needed to boot an original Mac Pro in
64-bit mode...

AGP Video Card for a 30 Dell UltraSharp?

2010-11-15 Thread Bill Connelly
Is there a DA Dual 533 or QS 2002 Dual 1GHz AGP Video Card for a 30
Dell UltraSharp?

Here's the Dell Monitor:
http://accessories.dell.com/sna/products/Displays/productdetail.aspx?c=usl=ens=dhscs=19sku=224-9949

The monitor has DVD-D (dual link digital DVD) and VGA ports ... with
max res of 2560 x 1600 ...

What might I get out of it with my Radeon ATI Radeon 9800 Pro? A few
folks say the DVD-I there is not Dual Link. Wonder what the VGA would
give me with the monitor? The maximum allowed by the ATI 9800 card is
in the ball park of 2048x1152 (16:9)).

The 30 monitor is a 16:10 ratio type.

Inexpensive flashable AGP cards, and flashing instructions, available?

GeForce 6200 / 256 MB VRAM, AGP can handle it. Be careful to buy a
model that can be converted to a Mac ROM (like the -WANG version) or
check on the swap list, I've seen several for sale there over the past
few months. Most models of this card are fanless but I would recommend
putting a small fan on the GPU.

The Mac Pro 1,1 has 32-bit EFI and will not boot into 64-bit mode. I
tried both of the references you cited several months ago and
eventually gave up. My 64-bit apps do run and the prevailing opinion
seems to be that the 32-bit EFI should be able to boot into the 64-bit

Apple would prefer that I buy a new Mac Pro rather than update the one

Doesn't seem to be playlist specific, Bruce.
However, it DOES appear to be iTunes Library specific.
as I have a number of previous iTunes Libraries in file that work
(burn) OK.

Also, the Console Log report:

doesn't seem to be iTunes specific.
It appears after ever app start-up.
Is that good?

I'll post the entire iTunes Crash Log below
and hope that someone has time and can make sense of it.

Well, that pretty well identifies the issue as something foo with the library.
The tedious fix is to copy all the music files from the library, delete the
library, create a new one and drag all the music files back into it. Perhaps
there are ways of fixing/rebuilding the library in place, I'm just too lazy to

It could be a simple confirmation that the plugin has loaded as

Not when there are better free alternatives. If you only need to
decompress files The Unarchiver is the Swiss army knife of Mac unarchivers

If you need to compress files beyond the built in .zip functionality,

Not particularly.

OSX has always offered 'Compress' in the contextual menu, it has made zip files
since 10.3 or so (it made .gz files before that); plus most archive formats
will open if double-clicked via Archive Utility.

Drag and Drop in eMail

2010-11-15 Thread gifutiger
On my G4, OS X 10.5.8, eMail 3.6 when I'm in eMail if I want to search
for every occurrence of an eMail, in either: From; To; Subject,
whether in All Mailboxes or the current Mailbox I can drag and drop
the From: or To: directly to the search tab and the system will locate
all of the eMails that have that heading.

Or I can Highlight and Copy any information such as the Subject: or
other information embedded in the message and paste it into the search
tab and the system will locate every occurrence.

However in OS X 10.6.4 eMail 4.3, the drag and drop doesn't work.
Does anyone else on this list use the drag and drop feature in eMail?
If so does it work and is there some flag that I've missed setting?

I've compared my eMail 3.6 on my G4 against eMail 4.3 on my MacBook
and can not find any differences.

Well that is other than on my MacBook I'm connected to gmail.com via
recent: gmail address which might be the problem.

DVD, Webcam, Pix, and Images: why are they soooo different

2010-11-15 Thread Jonas Lopez
DVD, Webcam, Pix, and Images: why are they s different

I continue to delve into the various differences on my several Mac
presentations.

When viewing a DVD, even in FULL SCREEN presentation, the picture is perfect,
not a pause or flicker to be found. When I view a canned video downloaded
from the internet and presented in Quicktime, Real, or Windows Media, we have
pauses and disruptions even at small sizes.

Allowing the video to fully download to the computer then showing it makes no
major difference, but does cure some minor presentation issues.

So, what is the difference between a video downloaded and now resident on the
computer and a DVD being read from a disk?

Why aren't these presentations the same or nearly so?

I do understand that if the processor is spending time to service the download
at the same time it is required to spend time slinging it to the screen, their
will be a slow down, but once the video is downloaded, why aren't the DVD and
Video the same quality?

Hope you can explain this apparent difference.

Re: DVD, Webcam, Pix, and Images: why are they soooo different

2010-11-15 Thread Chance Reecher
My best guess is that it's the video codec that's making the difference
in playback quality. DVDs are encoded with MPEG-2, which requires less
processor resources to decode and play back that the newer file formats
commonly used in downloadable video. Your G4's processor is simply too
weak to keep up with the load of decoding said newer formats.

DVD, Webcam, Pix, and Images: why are they s different

I continue to delve into the various differences on my several Mac
presentations.

When viewing a DVD, even in FULL SCREEN presentation, the picture is
perfect, not a pause or flicker to be found. When I view a canned
video downloaded from the internet and presented in Quicktime, Real,
or Windows Media, we have pauses and disruptions even at small sizes.

Allowing the video to fully download to the computer then showing it
makes no major difference, but does cure some minor presentation issues.

So, what is the difference between a video downloaded and now resident
on the computer and a DVD being read from a disk?

Why aren't these presentations the same or nearly so?

I do understand that if the processor is spending time to service the
download at the same time it is required to spend time slinging it to
the screen, their will be a slow down, but once the video is
downloaded, why aren't the DVD and Video the same quality?

Hope you can explain this apparent difference.

2010-11-15 Thread Charles Davis

Leopard X.5.8 --- MDD dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 2GB RAM

System Preference/ System/ Date Time can set everything, The
PROBLEM, the Time Zone jumps back to GMT, even when things are 'Locked
to prevent changes' [The 'on screen' clock is correct, but the 'Time

That does NOT sound that far from possible. Although the battery isn't
more than a couple of years old at the worst. I'll try that. Thanks.

Also, you might want to do a PRAM reset too (ya, you probably thought of
that already:-) Jeff
