I've been using this one as an Alarm Clock
http://www.robbiehanson.com/alarmclock/index.html

I've never really used either the timer or stopwatch functions, but it has them.

It works to wake me up in the AM. Of course, all I do when I wake up
is turn it off and go back to sleep, but it does get me up.

The direction the fan is in the bracket says to me the airflow is going the
wrong way? that's assuming that the "bracket" is installed in a similar fashion
as the stock fan in my MDD

Something else... what do you suppose this guy is talking about?

Apple's Solution--Does It Work?

After releasing the MDD's successor, the quieter G4 FW800, Apple made a
retrofit noise kit available to MDD owners. It comprises a new Papst fan
("Multifan 4212H", 12 V, 5.3 W), a new power supply, and a good set of
instructions. The power supply looks the same, but presumably has new fans. It
has been derated to 360 W, down from the original 400 W. I should point out
that this mod kit does NOT include a fan cowl such as is used on the FW 800
machines. This means the coupling of the fan to the heat sink is still not very
efficient.

the phrase "I should point out that this mod kit does NOT include a fan cowl
such as is used on the FW 800 machines" has got me wondering what this guy is
talking about? got any ideas?

You need to install the codecs for QuickTime to use to decode them.

Flip4Mac, as others have mentioned, is the "official" solution for wma/wmv.

And Perian is a nifty collection of all the others you'll need - divx, etc.

Note however, there will still be some wmv files that won't play.
That's because they use a DRM system that's MS proprietary, and is
only usable on Windows.

Another alternative to playing videos is to use Video LAN Client
(VLC). It's a great free player, and has many many codecs already
built-in. heh. It can play a lot of mpeg-1 and mpeg-2 videos that
make QuickTime crash!

Doing a web search, I find third-party utilities that will do this
conversion, priced from $25 to $50, but hasn't anyone created a
shareware app that can do it?

Transcoding is easy, one you know the key: almost every transcoder
app available ultimately uses the same engine -- ffmpeg. FFmpeg is
free / open-source, but has no pretty GUI.

FFmpegX is a GUI that contains a build of ffmpeg. Shareware. Works well.

My preference, however, is to install the free Burn.app. Besides
doing a nice job creating simple DVD-Video discs, it contains a full
build of ffmpeg that you can access directly from the command line
(Terminal.app).

Geeze. Using a Mac as a $2 egg timer?!

Show chicken to cat.
Put chicken in hot oven.
Put cat on guard, in front of oven.
Wait for excited meows and dancing.

Works with turkey and roasts too!

And don't forget to give der guard cat some chicken. If you don't,

Flip4Mac is the free QT plugin so QT Player can play .wmv:

VLC can also play .wmv"

You can convert .wmv files to something more Mac friendly at:

I've tested my Ram

2011-02-26 Thread smac0031
I've tested my Ram from both dead computers and it's OK according to
Tech Tool Deluxe.

I moved the 2 gigs of ram from my dead dualie into this pokey 400mhz
100mhz bus G4. I tested the ram from the dead DA in this computer.
It's all OK.

I can't say what the extent of the damage to the DA is beyond the dead
power supply. I have no idea why the dualie won't boot.

I've ordered a bunch of parts and if it works I should be able to
recover the data from the dead HD for less than $90.

What would cause this dual processor not to boot? The ram is OK, the
two HDs are running in this computer as I type. What gives?

Weighing costs a used G5 looks like an option. The only bad things
I've heard about them are the ones with liquid cooled processors leak
and corrode.

Which models are liquid cooled? The dual core ones? I want to know
what to stay away from.

This is the easy way to send the much maligned HTML Mail.

1. Make a web page
2. Upload it to a server
3. View the page (on the server) in Safari
4. Go to: File / Mail Contents of this Page (or Command+I)
5. Send.

IMO upgrades are only NECESSARY when (a) the present computer no longer
does what you actually NEED it to do (word processing vs. gaming, for
instance: I mean heck, I bet an an old Mac Plus on System 6 would be
enough for an obsessed writer who doesn't care about games, music,
pictures or videos; but it sure as hell wouldn't do a graphics-intense
and/or online game addict any good!), or, (b) the computer is running
too slowly or is outright malfunctioning, which makes it way easier and
maybe also even cheaper to buy a newer, "better" one instead of fixing
or upgrading the one you have which has become insufficient or problematic.

But if that NON-PROBLEMATIC Quicksilver 933 of yours IS doing everything
you need it to be able to do, I think you should count your blessings,
ENJOY it, bask in its beautiful sunlight and remember:

IF IT AIN'T BROKE, YOU DON'T HAVE TO FIX IT.

Re: MDD problem

2011-02-26 Thread Jörg Duurkoop
Hi,

I didn't use the kb but the power button on the monitor which gave the
same result.

After resetting the PMU again I'm back at the same situation as before
the repair. A bong, all fans work, the red LED on the mobo is lit and
the disks spin up but only chatter for a short time, the monitor stays
dark. The processor on the graphic card gets warm.

After resetting the PMU the LED of the power button goes dark again
after releasing the button although there is the bong etc. The next
time I try to start after the reset the LED is extinguished for a
short period and comes back on after the bong.

I payed 110 euros with new quiet fans and shipping back to my home.
The guy apparently also fixes mobos and will help me again. He told me
that my PSU was indeed defective.

Best regards, Jörg.
