Re: Max RAM for a G5?

2013-03-22 Thread Scottls

Also something you need to take into consideration is that the G5
architecture requires you to increase you RAM modules in pairs. Meaning, if
the DIMM 1 Slot 1 (front slot) has a 2GB stick in it then the DIMM 2 Slot 2
(back slot) must also have a 2GB stick in it or the system might not
recognize the 2GB in Slot 1 or it might give and error beep or tone and
refuse to boot altogether. Same with all the other pair of slots. (front
and back each being a pair)

This was a very common mistake I have seen so many do and not understand
why their configuration wasn't working.

Re: Max RAM for a G5?

Regardless of price, you definitely aren't going to see much improvement.
Speaking from experience, with video work you'll see the most gains in
processing, storage speed, then memory.

My current gen base model MacBook Air will run FCPx just fine and without too
much drama. Obviously with full 1080p it's a bit slow but it works. It would
likely be a huge step up from your G5. And my late-2011 15in MacBook Pro
absolutely tears through anything I throw at it.

Do yourself a favor and look into a newer Mac. Even a core2duo Mac mini would
be a big step up.

Here is the link to the OWC webpage that sells 4 GB RAM chips for my G5:

The price ranges from $61 to $73 per chip.( I don't know why some RAM chips
cost more than others--can someone enlighten me?) 1 and 2 GB chips are also
 offered there.

At $61 per chip, I could put 16 GB of RAM into this G5 for $244 + shipping.
If I left the 1 GB chips in the remaining four slots, would the Mac recognize
 and use 20 MB?
