Regardless of price, you definitely aren't going to see much improvement. Speaking from experience, with video work you'll see the most gains in processing, storage speed, then memory.
My current gen base model MacBook Air will run FCPx just fine and without too much drama. Obviously with full 1080p it's a bit slow but it works. It would likely be a huge step up from your G5. And my late-2011 15in MacBook Pro absolutely tears through anything I throw at it. Do yourself a favor and look into a newer Mac. Even a core2duo Mac mini would be a big step up.
