Am curious as to why the charge, outside of labor for hire. Power supplies
on these units (the QS) are no harder than earlier models; in fact the QS is
the last model where the PSU (power supply) is fairly easy to replace
(unlike the MDDs and beyond). Instructions are easy to find online
(try this:
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Repair/Repairing-Power-Mac-G4-Quicksilver-Power-
Supply/2053/1  )

If you've never done this, and are simply more comfortable having an
experienced other performing the task for assurance sake, then that's
understandable - Quicksilvers are worth it!
Best regards,
Dana

If you have used Linux and are comfortable with it, then it's a good
choice. However, mainstream PPC support is falling off. BSD's are a
pain to work with since they are so stripped down.

I have Tiger on my iBook so it's still a viable system. I have Linux
on my Thinkpads.

Good luck.

Nope. This is a power supply issue, and seems to be pretty common with
Quicksilvers. A new replacement ps is about $230 or so, we replaced on in a
professors system not too long ago.

You could try to find another QS or later Mac and drop your hdd into it; more
than likely your drive (and the rest of the system) is just fine, or look for a
replacement PS on fleabay or such.

More likely to be the power supply. Other parts may be affected, but the PS is
the mostly dead part.

Re: what can i do with my old G5?

2010-05-11 Thread lana
I am a newbie myself but have a question. What specifically do you want to
do with this G5, email,internet,graphic art,operate your ipod,write
letters, store documents? I have  a G4 that does all kinds of things. I would
imagine a G5 would do more. You might be able to install leopard ppc. My G4 has
that and is a lesser machne.
How much ram? How big is your hard drive? To find out, click on the apple
icon in the left hand corner of the screen. What kind of processor do you
have? Then click on "'about this mac". ram is memory.
I had a friend who said her g5 was too loud but somehow she got that fixed.
Another way of exploring the G5 is to click on system preferences to see
what is there.

I think what you are thinking of doing is a LOT more work than you ever dreamed
it would be.  Are you a coder?  Do you have a cross-platform compiler?  Though
not absolutely necessary, the source development kits (SDKs) would be nice to
have.  And, if any of the software you are talking about is copyrighted, yes,
it is very illegal.  Sorry to be the prick that bursts the bubble, but every

jagged, rocks of reality.  Peace, Dennis in Victoria

Personally, the iPad is great in all, but I would much rather have Mac OS X
Snow leopard on it. I would also consider having built-in bluetooth so i can
connect to wireless printers, and also i would suggest firewire ports, USB
ports, a mini-VGA port, a DVI port, and a smart card reader hidden behind a

on my wide screen all I do is hit the enlargement button again and it expands
to fill my screen without any problems. Have you tried going to the preferances
panel and choosing display then calibrating your new screen? Perhaps even
trying out the different screen sizes will  work. You should be able to get a
full wide screen.

Try this. Drag the window to the left until the left side of the window touches
the left border of the screen. Then, look at the bottom right corner of the
window, and you will see a small tab. press and hold on it using the let button
on your mouse, and then drag it to resize it. That should
resize the window to full screen based on your preference.

Re: How do I get Safari to display in wide screen?

2010-04-17 Thread lana
I checked display in my system preferences. There was an automatic change
by the os and I then couldn't see all of Safari. I fiddled with it a little
more and then downloaded Firefox which displays beautifully in wide
screen..Firefox is ok.

It only goes 2/3 of the way across the screen when I hit full screen.Since the
monitor is a wide screen,I thought that was the reason.

The window didn't drag to the left. The third time I reopened

Try this. Drag the window to the left until the left side of the window touches
the left border of the screen. Then, look at the bottom right corner of the
window, and you will see a small tab. press and hold on it using the let button
on your mouse, and then drag it to resize it. That should resize the window to
full screen based on your preference.

Re: It is official, we are orphans.

2009-06-09 Thread Lana

I hate to stir up a tempest but another way Apple upsets people is
price control and high prices. I am retired. I recently wanted to buy a new
computer and very badly wanted a new Apple. I couldn't afford the one I
wanted and the one I could,a Mac mini, offered much less in technology and
price. I didn't want buy a used or refurbished computer. I couldn't find
any End Of Life's in my area.For $599,I bought a Dell desktop,4 gig ram,5oo
gig hard drive, intel core duo with Windows Home Vista Premium ,64 bit.It
came with new speakers, keyboard, mouse, printer and 19 inch monitor.Admittedly
the monitor, mouse, keyboard and printer might have been last year's model but
they all work with 64 bit. When you have been waiting 10 years to buy a new
computer and are retired,a good deal has to be part of the decision. Apple
has to work on this area.
I am now looking for a G5 desktop with Leopard at a local computer
show at Gibralter Trade Center or on Craig's List.I still want another Apple
with Leopard on it but will have to wait. I prefer Apple. Apples prices are
no higher than Windows in somethings but the price controls make the
difference.

I use Eudora because reliably handles all my accounts and filters,

For new users, I often recommend Apple Mail. It works well for most
folx, and is well supported by Apple.

Re: Death of an iMate

There is nothing deader than a dead Mac. I should know. I started with
vintage  and older Macs that would work one day and be dead the next morning.I
tried all kinds of rescues at the suggestions of some of these people in this
group to avail.I finally decided, for my skill level,to get no earlier than a G3
desktop.I now have a G3,G4 and am about to get a new Mac Mini. There is
something sad about a dead Mac. You almost feel you should bury it.
I have been told the tube died or current electrical power was too
strong.I have also been told there wasn't enough memory. In the end no one
really seems to know.if I were more experienced and had more money I would
resurrect them.

This is a non-trivial physical device in the physical world and all of
those will break, eventually. Even solid state electronics have a
finite lifespan, even if we have no idea when they're going to die.
The Law of Thermodynamics is a harsh mistress, and she always gets her
way.

As to what caused it? Some flaw in the material or design eventually
gave way under the right circumstances and shorted something out or
broke, so your signals no longer flow. This isn't just a bunch of
wires, there is actual signal conversion circuitry in there that can
fry eventually. There are wires that can corrode and break over time.
Hope you can find another one, or replace that ADB device with a USB
one.

Re: Steve Jobs Oh My

2009-01-17 Thread lana

I should preface this by saying that most women think differently than
some men. They have to to ride the waves of day to day life.
I am very fond of Apple computers as I have just discovered them. I
hope they survive. I don't know if Mr Jobs has noticed but the younger
generation has been doing computers since they were tots and are quite good.
The best computer person I ever met had been using computers since he was four
and started building them at 12. He was 17 when I met him and earning as much
as me,an adult, at a part time job fixing computers. He was a trouble shooter
for Gateway. He was going to college in the fall.
For his own sanity Mr Jobs has to realize that we are all dispensable. The
next morning after he quits, someone will be doing his job. It may take them a
while to be as good as he is as experience does matter but we are all
dispensable. If we are lucky we have balanced our job and home life to ease the
transition from work to retirement. I hope Mr Jobs ' health improves so he can
stay on. He is obviously not ready to retire.
