Using SATA and IDE drives in same G4 Macintosh

2018-02-03 Thread William Tomcanin
Does anyone have experience with having both and IDE and SATA (via
SATA-to-IDE adapter) installed in the same G4 Macintosh?

I currently have two rotational drives, one with Tiger installed, the other
with Leopard on my G4 2002 Quicksilver. The Leopard drive is beginning to
should "yellow" SMART indicators, and I'd like to replace it with an SSD.

Is this possible to have an IDE and SATA drives on the same cable (with
adapter, of course)? If so, does it matter which is set to master/slave?

Thanks in advance,
Bill

Re: Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-09-12 Thread William Tomcanin
Just a brief update... I gave up on trying to get the the Pioneer optical
drive to work again -- I got it to work for about 1 day, then the same
problem. I won't recognized discs (CDs or DVDs) that it played immediately
after cleaning the previous day.

The LG unit works well, although the ADDONICS IDE/SATA adapter that shipped
with it doesn't allow the unit to write CDs or DVDs.

Overall, I'm pleased with the replacement. I don't know if it's worth it
to try and find an adapter that would restore the ability to burn discs.

Re: Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-08-21 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks, Bruce.

I am about to purchase an LG drive from OWC (with an SATA-IDE/ATAPI
converter). I realize that I will likely loose write capability, but I
think that is a function of the adapter that is coming with the product.

I'm in the process of researching other adapters that might allow me to
write with the appropriate S/W.

Quicksilver 2002 Optical Drive Replacement

2017-08-21 Thread William Tomcanin
Hello everyone,

My 15-year old original Pioneer optical drive has failed completely. I
removed it took it apart, cleaned it which brought it back to life for
about one day. Today it refuses to read anything!

Time to replace it and I am wondering what folks are using these days.

I've been to the OWC site and see some options for newer drives, but they
only function as CD/DVD-rom when connected internally with appropriate
adapters. I can live with that, but would appreciate any recommendations
from the group.

thanks in advance,
Bill

I currently use the G4 to run legacy S/W -- I guess it's more of a hobby

I do have a lot of audio and photo files on it, as well as some legacy PPC

Re: Replacement for Quicksilver G4 Superdrive

2015-04-20 Thread William Tomcanin
Has anyone manually cleaned the laser lens on their DVD drive? I'm tempted
at this point to remove the drive, take it apart and attempt to clean it
manually until a replacement arrives.

I understand that the lenses on the original Pioneer 103 DVR drives must be
immaculate in order for them to work properly.

The difficulty is that PATA drives are no longer manufactured and the old
stock of half-height (normal optical drive sized) PATA optical drives ran
 out a long time ago.

SATA optical drives are still available. Newegg regularly has them for
less than $20, so, if there is room, you might install a SATA optical drive
with a PATA to SATA adapter (some of the adapters will work in both
 directions).

Another alternative is to get this slim PATA optical drive:
 http://amzn.com/B001B7XYZO

This or similar slimline PATA to normal PATA adapter:
 http://r.ebay.com/Yy4C5d

And you may need this slim-line optical drive to full-size optical drive
 physical adapter: http://amzn.com/B007C1KPQY

The drive is slot-load, so it may not work well if you G4 has doors that
need to be pushed open by a tray.

 Jeff Walther

I use an external firewire DVD drive with my Macs. It solved every
problem I ever had burning discs on Apple hardware. USB is cheaper but
 sucks on PPC macs.

 Hi,
Yes I've done that with many of the optical drives I've had over the
years - alcohol on a cotton bud will usually do the trick for just cleaning
the lens. An associated problem with age is focus drift errors on the lens
 -
I had this problem with an Xbox dvd player - fortunately there are screw
adjustments available for the laser lens focus and a fiddle with these
 fixed
my problem. I would recommend googling for some kind of tutorial first
though as you need to be able to reverse your chosen adjustment back to
 it's
original position if it's the wrong one and before you attempt another.

Pretty much any ATA DVD +/- R/RW drive will work, if you’re using 10.5.

Jeff,

Have you encountered any problems with iTunes 11 or WiFi with your setup?

I am seriously considering doing the same thing. Recently I lost the use of my

Open TenFourFox. In the Bookmarks menu, click on Show All Bookmarks. A
new window will open with five buttons. Click the one at the far right (the
star cycle icon) and select Import Data From Another Browser, then select
 Safari.

This apparently only work for Bookmarks. i have had to re-enter passwords

your user names for the sites you visit by opening Safari and going to
PreferencesAutofill and clicking on the Edit button next to User names

Re: G4 Quicksilver 2002

2013-03-20 Thread William Tomcanin
Thanks for the responses everyone.

I confirmed that the noise was coming from the CPU cooling fan.

I removed it, removed the label, applied about 5 small drops of 3-in-1 oil
to the bearing and worked it in until the fan blades were able to move
freely.

I replaced the unit, and it is much, much quieter now (it sounded like a
field of crickets before).

I'll go ahead and purchase a replacement.

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

2012-07-07 Thread William Tomcanin
... an update.

My replacement fan is in transit, but in the interim I disassembled the
power supply and removed the old fan - a bit of a challenge due to the
tight fit and various items glued to its case.

I removed the label carefully drilled a small hole (1/16) into the hub
(there was no removable cap under the label), and fed several small drops
of 3-in-1 machine oil into the hole.

After manually rotating the fan for several minutes, the fins rotated
easily. I sealed the hole with black electrical tape, replaced the hub
sticker, and reassembled the power supply.

The fan started up, is much quieter, and is really pumping out the air.

I hope that this will keep me in business until I can replace the fan with
the new one.

Thanks to everyone for your advice and comments.

Incidentally, since I last gave the existing fan a good flip to get it

In any event, it's coming out soon.

 Hello Bill,

My QS 2002 came down with kernel panics etc. and after a lot of
searching discovered it was caused by over-heating due to the fact the MB
heat sink cooling fan was not working. I ordered a new fan and while I was
waiting for delivery cooled the heat sink by running with the side door
open and a small electric fan blowing on the heat sink. Worked fine and I
kept track of operating temperatures with a down loaded temp. read out.
After receiving the fan I removed and reseated the heat sink then installed
the new fan. New fan came with out a plug on it so save the old fan. As I
recall the new fan cost about $15.00. This was several years ago and the QS
is still working fine. A wonderful machine.
 Hope this helps.

Re: Excessive fan noise - Quicksilver 2002

Thanks everyone!

After some cleaning and further investigation, I discovered that the power
supply fan is binding. I had to flip it a few times with a toothpick in
order to get it moving, albeit rather slowly.

I suspect that this is driving the internal temperature too high, and is
resulting in the other fans running at higher speed.

It looks as if I will need to either replace the fan or power supply soon.

I know that you replaced your fan, Peter, has anyone replaced the full PSU?
If so, how difficult is it?

Thanks,

Thanks, peter.

The one thing I didn't do was to clean the actual fan blades. I will do
that immediately.

The noise doesn't appear to be a whine that I normally associate with
bearing wear, but seems to be more of a noticeable whirring.

If additional cleaning doesn't improve the situation, I'll start looking
for a replacement fan.

I had problems with fan noise and overheating with my MDD dual 1.25 -
resulted in me stripping it bare and performing certain 'modifications' -
some of them to the fan and airflow. The fan had metal spider web grilles
either side - I ditched the one which was screwed on and dremelled the
 other
away to improve airflow - I also ditched the metal pci blanks. As for the
fan I scrubbed it all mercilessly with a toothbrush and washing up liquid -
taking care to avoid the electrical bits in the hub - and then gave the
inner housing and blades several coats of heavy furniture wax polished to
the best shine I could get - seemed like a good idea at the time though I
would have preferred to treat it with the silicon spray I used to use in my
printing days to reduce friction whilst sliding large reams of paper around
 on benches and loading tables.
The 'modifications' reduced the noise and improved the airflow - but if
the noise is wear and tear to the fan bearings only a new or replacement
 120cm fan will cure that.

 Pete
