Re: Beige G3 Upgrade Questions

2010-06-15 Thread onelucent
I don't have the model # handy. But in that era, there were Toshiba
players that would boot OS install CDs. Have fun. I used an ATA PCI
card in that machine. One advantage I believe was that the 8 GB
partition rule was bypassed. Quite a computer with 768 MB ram,
upgraded VRAM. upgraded ROM. USB-Firewire card, upgraded video card,
upgraded DVD player, etc. One of the best-built computers ever with
those "solid-state" drive sleds. Never had a Firewire or USB device
that didn't work well through a PCI card on the Beige G3. Also,
never went beyond Jaguar-upgraded to a B&W, then Gigabit Ethernet,
then Digital Audio!

Move to the folder onto a web browser. Then Print as PDF. Browsers
are a great file cataloging and opening utility. Drag any JPEG file
over and Voila, etc.

Works on Firefox beautifully. Maybe not with Safari-although Safari
opens JPEGs

In fact, in Firefox, you can double-clip a folder within the Index
generated and get a new index of that subfolder.

I think weakest link applies. Depending on the quality of that
simple, often low-cost pre-amp. But if it is strictly an "Old World"

much luck with that set-up. One day will get one of those USB
turntables. Take a look at Amadeus for your audio program. Good
luck. This was all done on a Beige G3!

I was thinking the same thing. Also, once you get into SD cards,
some higher capacity or higher speeds ones will require "later,"
higher-capacity readers.

Re: Recommended bootable external Firewire drives for G4 MDD Dual-1Gb

2010-08-16 Thread onelucent
I would also look at the OWC On-the-go mini-Firewire drives. (They
come in different connection flavors as do the full size OWC
products.) I think other companies put out similar ones. The drive
can operate with power from the computer's Firewire port or a
separate power adapter (used to come with; now, OWC sells
separately). These are compact, come in much larger sizes than the
early days and can be purchased with 7200 rpm mechanisms. I have
used one as the boot drive for an Ibook for many years. AND-I have
been able to boot both iBooks and a G4 DA machine from these drives
on USB power ALONE, without using the power adapter. Very useful.
Too bad the PC world hasn't really adopted Firewire, and I know USB 3
is on the way. We would have more choices and prices for Firewire.

Re: SCSI PCI-controller for MDD

I would also recommend looking at www.hamrick.com. He has some notes
about this issue. There is also a SCSI-Firewire converter, which no
longer may be in manufacture (Ratoc had one) and which cost about
$100. I have 2 Adaptec SCSI cards and the Initio Bluenote SCSI card-
I hope they work with my old Powerlook when I bring it out of storage
one day. I have been able to install a Leopard boot drive on a SCSI
drive down-pinned to 50 and it boots my Quicksilver just fine.
Please Mr. Jobs, how about a more reasonably priced, less turbo-
charged junior model of the current Mac Tower, the engineering for
which is long-amortized. Some of us like to work with different PCI
cards and exchange drives internally at times, etc. If the Mac only
had the richness of graphics and audio cards like the PC world.

Re: Trying to bring a partition back to life

2010-11-09 Thread onelucent
Actually, in OS 9, I have had good luck with Disk Doctor. It may
take multiple runs, each time getting a little further. I may skip
Media Check so it concentrates on the Disk Directory. Usually, the
hardest thing is to capture the partition, so don't give up. Often,
Norton will capture (i.e. mount) a partition that Disk First Aid
can't. Yes, Disk Warrior is good, best run from the CD itself, if
possible. Lastly, for OS 9, you still have some mounting utilities.
Again, they often capture a partition that Disk First Aid can't in my
experience. Good luck.
