Overactive pmTool

G5 dual 1.8/10.5. Lately Activity Monitor shows pmTool to be running
as high as 18% of CPU. I do use multiple browsers, and a few months
ago I used Onyx to clear the Spotlight cache. But that was months ago.
What can I do to get pmTool under control?

Speaking of browsers, I've noticed lately that Google Reader seems to
crash them while I am loading subscriptions. Wonder if they are doing
this on purpose. The only browser seemingly stable with Reader is
Stainless, which has improved since I tried it a year ago. Stainless
now seems faster than Omniweb, which is waaay faster than Safari or
Webkit.

Anyone use The Old Reader with ppc?

Stop running Activity Monitor? :-)

pmTool is the program Activity Monitor runs to enumerate processes:



It will be active in proportion to the number of processes you're running at 
any given time multiplied by the Update frequency, sso if yiou have a lot of 
processes, and you're updating very often it eats up CPU just trying to keep 
up. (like when you run 'top' at the command line, it's usually right there near 
the top of CPU usage…)


If you set your Update Frequency to 'Less Often' it should drop down.

pmTool is the process that collects data on other processes, for 
Activity Monitor!  If you want it to use less cpu time, then set 
Activity Monitor to only update every 5 sec.

Yes.  Google has decided to screw millions by intentionally making 
their product crash.


The only browser seemingly stable with Reader is Stainless, which

Have you tried clearing caches?


Anyone use The Old Reader with ppc?


I use NetNewsWire on Leopard/ppc.

Since Google announced they would be closing Reader, they have buried
it in their product directory and do not even list it at the top of
the search results for "Reader". So it would not surprise me if they
just were not actively fixing bugs in the hope that people will just
stop using it. Closing Reader is probably the dumbest thing I've seen
anybody do in 18+ years on the internet.

Much appreciation. I was concerned actually  why pmTool would be so
busy recently, since none of my usage patterns have changed. Other
than using Stainless more and Firefoxy-stuff less.
