I presume you can, but a PCI card would be severely limited by the bus, compared to the AGP bus (designed for higher performance with video cards). Usually, you add a PCI video card to run a second monitor, where you don't need high performances. > Would this upgrade (noticeably) speed up games like Civ 3 or Sims? Mhhh... those kind of games shouldn't be very much 3D intensive (compared to games like Doom or Halo, I mean). So they could be more relying on CPU power; hence, the improvement could be relative (I could be wrong, thou). However, the video cards you mentioned are so much better than your FX 5200, that you'll get some improvement for sure. And it will be an investment for the future (keeping your G5 usable for a longer time). -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. I have a DP 533 DA, and I also installed a flashed GeForce 6200 AGP card. It made a significant difference; between that and an Acard SATA card, my machine is pretty useful. My test application was Klondyke Forever; the animation with the Rage 128 card was unusable, but with the 6200, it runs smoothly and easily. The one limitation I find with this machine is YouTube. Has anyone tried the 64mb ATI Radeon 9600 Pro shipped with 2004 PowerMac G5s in older G4 towers? My friend`s G5 uses this card and I would like to know if it could be replaced by something better and moved to the G4 Gigabit. This would be a symbiotic move between the Macs! For the time, the 32MB Radeon 7500 was a significant upgrade from the 16MB Rage. The other option is a GeForce 2MX. IIRC, they were pretty much top of the line then. Twice the vram and faster processor yielded a significant speed bump. Here is a link to a Barefeats test of the Radeon, GeForce and the Rage in a 466 DA. http://www.barefeats.com/graphiX.htm While the DA has a 4X AGP, the speed differences will be similar to a 2X slot. It shows the Radeon and the GeForce as anywhere from 5% to 300% faster than the Rage Pro. I would go with one of those as a bang for the buck test. Now if you have games that run under OS 9, there is a pci card that blows them away, the VooDoo 5 5000. The meanest, badest, fastest pci video card, but not supported under OS X. It's not dedicated. You can use one of the other 33MHz 64bit slots for a video card, and put another card in that video slot. I did this once with a 66MHz PCI sata card. I figured I was more interested in disk access than video speed on that machine (was used as file sever). -- You received this message because you are a member of G-Group, a group for those using G3, G4, and G5 desktop Macs - with a particular focus on Power Macs. RE: Video upgrade options for a Gigabit Ethernet G4
A flashed Radeon 9800 256mb card off ebay will set you back $200 but is probably the best you could get for a 2X AGP slot. It depends on how much you want to spend too. A 128mb version of the same card would set you back $125 or more. I just bought a flashed nVidia 6200 256mb for my 2X AGP Cube and is quite good too and at only Au$99 is pretty good value in my opinion. Don't forget these are flashed PC cards. Retail Mac versions of the same video cards are probably double that at least. An AGP card is also a lot faster than its PCI equivalent as well. Video upgrade options for a Gigabit Ethernet G4
I`m slowly upgrading an old G4 Gigabit Ethernet for the young son of a friend. I have already maxed out the memory through the LEM swapt list and it works much better with 2Gb of RAM (the system is currently running OS 10.4.11). It is still used to play games and the original ATI Rage 128 with 16mb VRAM isn`t up to the task of running Medal of Honor as fluidly as it should. Being not too familiar with this model, and after a Google search, I`m looking for advice on how to upgrade the video card. As I have been able to check, this model only has an AGP x2 slot for video cards, plus the PCIs. The ATI Radeon 7500 Mac Edition seems to be compatible, but at 32Mb doesn`t seems to provide much advantage for mid-2000s needs! Has anybody proceeded with such upgrade and, if so, which cards have been used? I guess going for PCI would be better, although I`m not sure the speed of the PCI slots of this model can run "modern" cards. Thanks! ADC Video upgrade for dual G5
I have a dual 1.8GHz G5 with an AGP 8x NVidia 5200 connected to an 22" Apple Cinema Display, with the infamous ADC connector. Given the lack of graphics power in the 5200, I'd like to upgrade. As far as I can tell my upgrade options would be a factory original Radeon 9600. There were aftermarket 9800 and X800 boards available, but I'm not sure that they had ADC connectors. I've also seen Radeon 9000's available at somewhat reasonable prices, but research seems to indicate that they only work in G4's. Can anyone clarify this situation and provide me with some advice on reasonably priced upgrades (say ~$60). Thanks! Re: video upgrade
The image of the card shows three outputs, and it may support Apple displays, but I doubt it supports being installed in an Apple computer.
