blu-ray drive in and speakers for XServe G5

2011-01-28 Thread Bruce Ryan

Hi folks

At the moment, I use an XServe G5 (2·0 GHz, 2GB RAM) running Leopard
client (not Leopard Server) as my main computer. It looks like I'll be
using it for a while to come. Can anyone recommend speakers and a blu-
ray player - or doesn't the G5 have enough poke for such shiny
additions?

Many thanks

Bruce

OS X doesn't support Blu-ray.

Any speakers should work.

Your G5 is more than ample speed-wise for
blu-ray. Blu-Ray is just a big DVD, really.
Video data on it is usually either MPEG-2 or
MPEG-4 (h.264). No big deal.

Apple does not directly support Blu-Ray. But 3rd
party software support is available, and
companies like OWC (macsales) offer the drives,
both internal and external.

Speakers are so subjective. IMO it's best to
go to computer stores and take a listen to what
they have.

If yer going to be doing any video editing, you
might want to consider adding some memory.

Hi Dan,

I am currently looking for a second hand / refurbished mac. Near to
where I live is one the biggest Mac Centre stores in the region (on
the Northolland peninsula). I am looking for an iMac G5 in their
bargain basement during the January clearance sale. Or would it be
better to go for an XServe?

I need a model that can support an external Blu-Ray drive or any
other external peripherals yet to come. Currently I'm doing a
photography and image processing course where I often use an iMac G5.
It's sleek and fast but I don't know if it can handle all the
external gizmos.

Please start a new thread; don't hijack someone else's. This
particular thread is about blu-ray drive and other enhancements to an
XServe .

Altec-Lansing computer speaker systems are tremendous.

My Logitech 2.1 THX certified makes me very happy, especially when I
turn it up. Sorry I don't remember the model # but they were about $70-$80.
