Re: bootable firewire sata enclosure

2011-04-01 Thread Jörg Duurkoop
Hi,

I have this one, boots my dual 1.25 MDD:

http://www.raidsonic.de/en/products/external-cases.php?we_objectID=6995

I put in a 500 GB SATA drive and I use the second partition as music
library connected via USB to my netbook.

Best regards, Jörg.

I have been very happy with the IcyDock that I own, sorry I can't give
 you the model number.

The old standby is to look for one with an Oxford 911 chipset, which
will apply to FireWire 400 enclosures. The Oxford chipset for FireWire
800 enclosures has a different nomenclature.

I used an OWC Firewire enclosure to boot a 533MHZ DA off of to bypass the
128GB limit. I'm pretty sure if you look on the OWC website they will tell
you what is and isn't bootable.

These things are pricey. There has to be something cheaper,
something that's just the enclosure that I can put my HD in.
Anyone? Thanks a lot, Dan.

Here's a good USB F/W box. But all you really need for the basic
bootable drive on the iMac is a USB enclosure.

I have an earlier version of the miniStack v2.5 by NewerTechnology
with a 1.5GB Seagate SATA HD in it as sold by owcomputing.com
(macsales / Otherworld Computing). It has FW and USB2 connectivity,
and acts as a hub, too, when turned on.

They have a number of other ones, also:

Don't think I've seen one with an ethernet connection ... but haven't
been looking recently.

All of LaCie's Quadra series drives that I've used are bootable.
They come in many flavors, various interfaces etc. The cases of the
ones I've used are quite sturdy, but easily openable - so you can
update / replace the drive mechanism therein. IOW, these tend to be
high-end enclosures. They're available from the usual venues.

Then it's network storage - a whole different beastie.
