Ok, but then ... there are GUI interfaces for Git. Why not use them?

For example, the IDE could execute

There a newbie can do all.

> I will see...

Just as an annotation. I myself prefer using Git via commandline.

Because since I started using Git for some source code and then became
familiar with it I found a lot of other possibilities to work with Git:

My personal dotfiles on my computers, a bunch of script files on
servers, the /etc directory on different servers, a couple of languages
I use to program and so on ...

For that I use Guake dropdown terminal, Tig and some shortcuts to the
different directories I am working in, so that on each computer and each
program I work with (different Editors, different IDEs) I have the same
interface and the same couple of keystrokes to do versioning in Git,
what I do all the time the whole day long.

For me a special interface for Git in any IDE/Editor is wasted energy as
I never will use it as long as it is not faster and more convenient than
that I am using on all programs. And I doubt there ever will be one as GUI.

A common criticism to Git is, that there is no real sufficient GUI for
it, but I think the real reason for that is, that if one works with Git
in different circumstances, commandline will always be the fastest and
most flexible option.

I don't know if TB 17 did, but 45 did respect Reply-To which is usually
set by mailinglist software to the address of the ML. One could hit
Ctrl-R to send the answer to the ML.

Since V 52 TB answers to the sender if hit Ctrl-R and causes a lot of

They changed behaviour of TB 52 for mailinglists:

Very, very silly.

And now they did a patch here:

We will have to wait until TB 57 and then alter
mail.override_list_reply_to in about.config to get the old bahaviour

Until then a Addon helps:

Sorry, but what you write is not understandable.

And this:

http://gambaswiki.org/wiki/howto/git

should first be translated to English before recommending it to
newcomers in Git! I am not able to tell, whether it's content is right,
as I hardly understand it.

Sentences like

"In Gambas git repository the work are in the branch, master are the
principal and the develop working, there's a stable branch and some
other of not yet working and in develop work like the cmake future feature."

are pure nonsense.

And this piece is full of such sentences!

I think it's part of every distro. In Debian I do an "apt install tig".

Then, if you're in "gambasdevel", after a "git pull", write "tig" to see
and scroll through the commit log and have a look at the changes.

You have to get familiar with that program, as it seems to be a little
bit crude first, but I did not find any better "GUI" for Git till now.

Our servers* are powerful servers running with Debian, mirrored by DRBD,
backupped to another datacenter at night and used for shared hosting.
There are hostmasters who manage the servers. The only thing I had to do
would be configuring Mailman. This is done once and then it runs forever.

Do you know the count of users and traffic of the Gambas ML?

One web-packet there costs 5€/month, has 1GB webspace and 10GB traffic
included, I would have no problem to donate it to the Gambas community,
but for sure there are better ways to finance it (maybe a Gambas
Foundation, that is owner of the web-packet?).

Until Google decides to cancel it. If we do self hosting we are the

I do hosting, also a couple of (very small private) Mailinglists. I am
member of hostsharing.net, a german open source webhosting coop. As I
host for my firm and some others I can donate some free traffic to the

I never hosted a public ML, also do not know anything about spam

Maybe its better not to rely to one vendor only. Why not switching over
to a vendor for mailinglists like

https://www.freelists.org/about.html

or ...

make a subdomain list.gambaswiki.org and host a mailinglist by self?
Thats not rocket science.

The latter is sth I could do, as I already host gambas-club.de at my
hosting provider. As I can see the traffic the Gambas lists creates is
not a big problem.

But I'm in holliday right now.

git branch

Ok, you are on master, thats bleeding edge.

> sudo make uninstall

ok, you uninstalled binary Gambas from your computer

now:
git pull

This fetches all new changes from Gitlab into the repository (in the
subdir .git) and updates the master branch, you are in.

Now:

> ./reconf-all && LLVM_CONFIG=llvm-config-3.5 ./configure -C
> make && sudo make install

Ok and you're done. But be careful! Maybe you need make clean before
that (as Tobi wrote).

> Unclear part:
> I run the git pull command as Charlie suggests?

Yes, that is right. It downloads only the changes to the local
repository (in .git).

> Or git checkout master as Christof seems to suggest?

The local repository resides in .git

There are all branches, all versions, all tags of Gambas ever!

git checkout anything

extracts one single state out of the (local) repository to your filesystem.

git checkout master
= bleeding edge

git checkout v3.10.0
= Gambas V3.10

Please understand: If you did a clone from Gitlab to your computer you
have the complete repository, look at that:

git tag

> I have never used make clean when need to use it?

As Tobi wrote, if C/C++ files have been added.

> Would it be the same as rm -rf gambasdevel /?

Jesus! Avoid that! 100MB are gone and you have to download that again!

So clone it once all and never delete it but just fetch differences.

Sorry for all, but downloading Gambas each time is quite silly (and bad
to Gitlab also).

Normally one would clone the repo first, then work with it and just
fetch the differences:

Clone:

git clone https://gitlab.com/gambas/gambas

Then you are automatically on the master branch, which is bleeding edge
development.

Fetch only differences since last clone/pull:

cd gambas
git pull

And that's all. If your current branch is master then you always are on
bleeding edge!

(do configure/make/install as usual)

But as you now have the complete repository on your computer you can
easyly switch to another version, you can checkout tags and also branches:

For actual stable you would do:

git checkout v3.10.0

For an older one:

git checkout v3.7.1

I dont know much about compiling gambas, but I think, that a "make
clean" could be neccessary between compiler runs.

I just tested Gambas daily, it does some weird thing with indentation in
the editor of the IDE when a string before an "If" goes over more than
one line.

I have installed:

3.9.90+svn8165+build3~ubuntu16.04.1

Attached there is a piece of code copied out of the editor. If you look at

"If msg Then"

This If has not the right indentation.

For a datawarehouse 200.000 rows are not very much. But in a
datawarehouse normally those jobs are running at night. Next day you
look at the results and you get them fast, because these are just a
handful of tuples(records) or there is nothing to be extracted.

From what database do you query "select * from table" with ODBC?

If you query such a lot of tuples into Sqlite you won't make it better,
I think. Also a collection seems to be not very fast.

Why not use a mature DB like Postgresql? You could try
https://wiki.postgresql.org/wiki/Foreign_data_wrappers

If the rows are in Postgres, you can do anything you want.

I never understood the religious cruzification of Goto.

Sometimes I do things like:

If anyvar = Null then
   Goto EndAndExit
Endif

'Some or a lot of code ...
'Inside another break:

If anothervar = Null Then
   Goto EndAndExit
Endif

EndAndExit:
End

For that situations I find Goto very useful.

If I use Goto, I only use it to jump downwards. I for me found out that
jumping upwards is a jump to hell.

And if it is really useful (jumping upwards, very very seldom) then it
has to be heavily documented.

You can do this by creating a project as library. After you compiled it
once and mad an executable with Ctrl-Alt-X, all modules and classes with
the magic word "Export" in the beginning are shared by the library and
can be used in other projects.

You have to choose the library inside the other projects' definition
dialog (in the IDE).

So you can outsource common code and use it in a lot of projects.

In the other projects you can define the lib they should use in the
project dialog [Ctrl-P]. In the libraries tab there you can choose which
lib has to be included.

I fear there is none. If you create and use own libs you have to
distinguish between development and production.

Development:

At development time a lib has to be defined as such (type "library" in
the project dialog) and "vendor" has also to be defined with an unique
name. If you compile the project, the IDE places the lib in

~/.local/share/gambas3/lib/[vendor]/

say ...

~/.local/share/gambas3/lib/yourname/

And all other projects can use the libs residing in
~/.local/share/gambas3/lib

Production:

If you create a installation package from a library project and install
it on any system with Gambas3 on it (even your development system), the
libs will be installed in

/usr/lib/gambas3/yourname

A project which depends on a lib will search for it there.

The naming of the lib is always like that:
yourlib:1.4.gambas

Which includes the version string, so that different versions of libs
can reside together in the lib directory.

For object-oriented programming in Gambas a struct can be replaced with
a class. When I started Gambas programming I also made some structs for
the purpose of bringing a couple of variables together to define an
object. But in Gambas the right tool for that is a class.

The class defines an object, you can create an array of a couple of such
objects and you can sort that array.

Oh, thank you :-)

The unittests work well and reliable with every program or library and
if one has full control over every piece of Gambas code that uses these
libs.

But there is a caveat: If one wants to include a lib whith unittests in
it, the lib requires the unittest component to be installed in the
program, that uses the lib. Because every single test class has to have
a "Inherits ATestContainer" in it to work as expected.

Without the Unittest component installed Gambas won't start a program
that relies on that library.

That's bad. I searched and did not find a way around it. Therefor I see
the development of the unittest component beeing in alpha state.

[Gambas-user] Unittest for Gambas

2016-09-22 Thread Christof Thalhofer
Hello,

one of the things I felt Gambas was lacking, was unittests. When I was
developping software with Gambas I always had a couple of testmodules in
my projects lying around, but it was not very satisfying. Especially,
because I had to rewrite stuff for each new library.

So I searched for elaborated solutions for unittests for Gambas, but
couldnt find one.

The only thing I found was an old framework written in Visual Basic,
called ComUnit. It was kind of software archeology to understand, how
this thing worked as I decided to fork it. And it took a couple of days
(fortunately I suffered with influenza, so I had a little time) to
rewrite it for Gambas.

But now it is usable, it works in my projects, with Gambas 3.9.

It is basic (sic!), there are no parameterized tests, I do not know,
whether it is secure, whether classes are exposed unnecessarily, whether
it is useful for automation of tests and it's a mixture of mine and the
original author's coding style. But I think, it could be a good
beginning. It's here:

https://github.com/Deganius/gb.deg.unittest/

And in the Software Farm. But naturally more recent at Github.

I would be glad if you could try it out. "Throw an eye on it" as the
crazy Germans say ;-)

I'm currently writing a project for unittesting for Gambas, it is
inspired from http://comunit.sourceforge.net/ and PHPUnit. I would like
to share it on GitHub and if the quality is ok and you agree, name it
"GUnit" or "GbUnit" or so and share it with the Gambas community.

At the moment I am unsure, whether to make a library or a component with it.

This could eventually be a nice candidate for an IDE extension. But I
would like to invoke it by keyboard shortcut, because it would be
something one uses nearly as often as "F5" if one does test driven
programming.

Also it could be an integrated part of the IDE (like profiling) because
it has to run inside the project it has to test. It could be a component
and if a project uses this component, the IDE could recognize it and
runs it by keyboard shortcut.

Thank you!

The libs are with correct name in
~/.local/share/gambas3/lib/deganius/...
(Vendor name is "deganius")

Gambas placed them there when I hammered "Ctrl-X" in the IDE during
development.

My Makefile defines a couple of Gambas programs and libraries. They are
built with gbc3 and gba3. One library depends on the existence of some
others.

Make builds all correct.

The strange thing now is:

# debuild binary
(which uses the Makefile) fails. At compile time the compiler does not
see the existing libraries in ~/.local/share/gambas3/lib/deganius

But
# dpkg-buildpackage -b
(which also uses the Makefile) works ...

Ok, the problem is now gone by usage of dpkg-buildpackage, but I'd like
to understand what is now different, that since Gambas 3.9.1 debuild is
broken ...

If you are able to control the naming inside your own projects, you are
in a relatively comfortable position, but if you want to use foreign

Please correct me if I'm wrong: REST came later and as I can see, the
upcoming of REST ist somewhat an answer to the extreme complexity of SOAP.

For a REST webservice you need a good tutorial, but not really a
framework. The only thing that is needed for REST is a router that maps
url paths to functions and sends back the result via HTTP. The result
can be anything, a file, an integer, a Json string, whatever.

Here is an example with the microframework Slim for PHP:
https://arjunphp.com/creating-restful-api-slim-framework/

A router does a mapping like this:

> Method URL Action
> GET/api/todos Retrieve all todos
> GET/api/todos/search/bug Search for todos with ‘bug’ in their name
> GET/api/todo/1 Retrieve todo with id == 1
> POST /api/todo Add a new todo
> PUT/api/todo/1 Update todo with id == 1
> DELETE /api/todo/1 Delete todo with id == 1

> OH MEN this will be hard to implement and made a component! too much to

My understanding: If you do REST it would be somewhat easy, if you do
SOAP it would be horrible.

I do not like Soap webservices. The few times, I had to implement Soap
in a piece of software I hated it because of it's complexity. And I
found another workaround then.

Maybe for a Java programmer with big iron and big frameworks in the

Yes, but one needs a while to understand, that classes and methods, that
are written in the wiki are explained in the source code of Gambas. Example:

http://gambaswiki.org/wiki/comp/gb/enum

Is hardly understandable without the example below. Therefore I added it.

For me it lasted about a year or so, to understand that the Gambas
source code can explanation a lot. Before that I searched Google and
Mailinglists to understand how things should be done.

I never (as I remember) found any advice in gambaswiki.org to have a
look into the source code. For you it might be natural, for a beginner
it is not.

Sure, I understood. But I do not use versioning in the IDE. And I do not
use Svn any more.

If I have done my work in the IDE I go to the project's folder in the
terminal and use the program tig to commit the changes to the local
repository (which is inside the .git folder). Afterwards I push the
local changes to my main repository on my server.

Tig itself is a great interface to a Git repository on the commandline.

And git as I use it on the commandline is very mighty, especially with
branches. I show you how:

--

If I want to develop a new feature, I first create a new branch as a
copy of the master branch, when I'm on the master branch:

   git branch new_feature

Then switch over from master to that branch:

   git checkout new_feature

Then do my work and develop the new feature. Then do a commit of my
work(*see_later):

git commit -a -m "new feature added"

Then switch over to the master branch

   git checkout master

Then merge my work into master:

   git merge new_feature

--

With this kind of workflow, I can develop inside a lot of parallel
branches (if I want to).

Every time a feature in a separated branch is done, I can merge it into
the master branch. I also can have a separate branch for hotfixes which
I have to merge into the master but also into development branches.

Git is very mighty and flexible and once you understand it, you never
want to go back to Svn any more.

--

*see_later: I do not do my commits with git, instead I use tig, as
mentioned before. Because while I develop a feature, I usually do not
want to do just only one commit, but instead many commits. One for the
Latex files, another one for the code, a third one for the form, the
next one for a module and so on. Commits in git are fine-grained and
this for me is better done with tig.

Yes, I think this should not be done by default. Often a property value
is the result of a function. There it would be counterproductive.

To see the range via "$..." ist useful, but it should not be ruled by

Thank you, but I don't use SVN any more for my projects, only Git. Git
is easier to handle. :-)

I use Git from commandline and do not use any version control inside the

Yes, but in my case I also need corresponding private Variables, which
hold the data.

Therefore I wrote the GS-creator for me as a simple tool because I have
to create a lot of classes which represent rows of database tables as
models for my own Gambas ORM.

Even with the help of the Gambas IDE that job would cause a lot of pain
in my hands ... ;-)

Hm, if I declare properties in a parent class I do this only for the
correct work of methods, that depend on the existence of these
properties in childs.

If a child does not overwrite the property, it has to be fulfilled by
the parent, so the property in the parent has to bedeclared with

property_read() ...

property_write() ...

so that methods later work in a correct way. That is a logical
consequence of the inheritance of properties.

For the mess of writing such a thingy by hand all the time I wrote for
me a little tool, the getter-setter-creator, it could be much better as
it is (id does only string, integer, float and date), but it works for
me. I attach it.

When I build and install my project on Debian/Ubuntu, my libraries will

There is no installation of libraries in /usr/lib/gambas3/vendor

While programming, libs are in

Yes I understand.

> Why do you need that?

I have a (old – ported to Gambas) right-system based on a class "Allow"
with constants as flags like so:

Public Const This As Integer = 1
Public Const That As Integer = 2
Public Const Else As Integer = 4
Public Const Any As Integer = 8
...

And a form where I display the constants names and let the chief choose,
whether the employee can have:

Allow.This and Allow.That but not Allow.Else ...

This or That or Else is based on the names of the constants which are
displayed in the form. I'd like to give the chief some more information,
like

This = "The employee can do this, what causes a lot of things like ..."

And so I thought that I can do in code:

'' The employee can do this, what causes a lot of things like ...
Public Const This As Integer = 1

And use that in my program. It would be an elegant way to declare
constants, and keep the meaning of them together.

Hm... can you pack that data in a separated lib? I did so with some of
my libs which grew too much. One big lib became 4 smaller ones.

Thats also better to prevent spaghetti code (but not dependency hell ;-)).

Seems not, because libs are executables.

If you have to debug a lib, simply copy the code to the project using
the lib (and remove the lib itself from your project).

In the project you can make a subdir AAALib (or something equivalent – I
do this to remember, that the lib's code is inside my project) and copy
the sourcecode there.

Then you can test your project, debug and change the code. When done,
move the sourcefiles back to your lib, make an executable of them and
include it again in your project.

Now I see, that compiling without "-w" results in correct working
libraries.*

Thank you all for being audience ;-)

P.S.: * Is that a bug? Shouldn't the compiler lead to the same result
with- and without warnings?

Another thing I saw now:

The complete lib ist compiled by the IDE.

But the incomplete lib is compiled in a makefile so:

  gbc3 -aw ./libs/deg-person
  gba3 -o ./libs/deg-person/deg-person.gambas ./libs/deg-person

[Gambas-user] Lib Export Problem in /usr/bin

2016-04-18 Thread Christof Thalhofer
Hello,

there is a problem within my project in Gambas 3.8.4 with one library.
When this library is in /usr/bin, a couple of classes is not available
any mone, despite they are exported.

I made a screenshot from another projects' library importer:

As you can see, the same library deg-person.gambas is:

1) In a subdir of my homedir. It presents all exported classes.
2) In /usr/bin. Here it presents not all exported classes. Some of them
are not available any more.

Does anyone know why?
