[Gambas-user] Gambas 3 in Debian Repository?

I see Gambas 3.1.1 has re-appeared (yet again) in the repository of Xubuntu

Seems ok. Is this (at long last) a working version?

 I found it. I had found that bug:

 The Case tests in ChkInput method are incorrect:

  Select Key.Code
Case (key[n] Or Key[N]) And Key.Alt

 does not mean:

  If (Key.Code = Key[n] Or Key.Code = Key[N]) And Key.Alt

 but:

  If Key.Code = ((Key[n] Or Key[N]) And Key.Alt)

 And if you want to check against an alphabetic key, you should use
 Key.Text,
 not Key.Code.

 But you didn't answer. As the version didn't change, I guess you didn't
 fix it. Could you?

Many Gambas3 files (including source files) are hidden. In Nautilus (the

It might be safer to make a source archive (Project, Make, Source Archive)
and then restore it on the other machine.

I use Dropbox to store my projects. That way the same project is available
from home and work. Ideally needs (always-on) broadband.

The planned route to programming with the Pi is by using Python. The lack of
integrated application gui in Python makes Gambas a much easier option. As
has been the case through the history of personal computing, kids (of all
ages) will cut their teeth writing games. Python does not lend itself to
this. Gambas does.

I am guessing you did not change directory to the extracted directory. There
is nothing mysterious about reconf-all: it is a file (like most things in
Linux). An ls command from terminal will find if you have the reconf-all
file in your current directory. You should also be able to find it from
nautilus file manager.

The blog is nothing more than a step-by-step version of the Gambas website

SQLite is single-user update but multi-user read. You don't say whether you

of different users will have concurrent read access.

If the former then Gambas and SQLite work a treat with Dropbox. I guess
really large GByte databases will have problems updating but Dropbox does
update intelligently.

[Gambas-user] Moving a modal child window

Hi

I am trying to position a modal child window relative to its parent. When I
put 'me.top = FMain.top + 20' in the _Open class of the child, it works with
GTK but not QT (where the child window opens centered).

I can get the child window to move correctly in both GTK and QT by using a
1msec timer event to do the move (once).

Surely there is a more elegent way? Should I expect the QT and GTK versions
to work the same or will there inevitably be differences?

Here is an example. It won't be directly applicable to you but will give
pointers. In constructing the CSV, I used ^ as a separator. If you inherit
a CSV file with a more traditional , separator, then you must be mindful
that text entries enclosed within parentheses in your CSV may contain odd
characters even commas. If you don't get rid of these with a replace
statement than it will play havoc with your sqlite database.

Also sqlite does not have a defined data format. I choose to use -mm-dd
so most CSV dates need converting.

You don't say what version Ubuntu. I can't see a reason to compile an old
version of Gambas (2.18).

Just enter:
sudo apt-get install gambas2
from terminal.

Do not add from Ubuntu repository ( e.g. 'Add/Remove' on 8.04). The
repository versions tend to be incomplete.

btw New Ubuntu Maverick (10.10) has version 2.21 in repository. I am not
sure yet whether it is complete.

Fabien

Thank you for that. Gambas 3 used to compile on Ubuntu 10.04 (lucid) using
the list of dependencies for 9.10 (Karmic) in the Gambas installation pages.
It now also needs intltool (or part of it?) as in sudo apt-get install

Gambas 3 now runs but looks odd. I am way out of my comfort zone. :confused:

Re: [Gambas-user] Currency and addition/subtraction

2010-03-12 Thread charlesg

Hi,

I guess the simple answer is:
fTotal += Val(tblView[row, column].text)
However, you will eventually run into rounding errors.

there was quite a lengthy thread not long ago about this. The conclusion (if
such a thing can be reached on a forum :-)) was that currency should be
worked on as integers and decimal points added at display time. The problem
is compounded by barmy tax authorities on the continent who demand
calculations to four decimals.

At the time, I wrote the following simply as a test. As with most of my
programming, it is unlikely to be the most efficient method. :blush:

 PUBLIC SUB btnRun_Click()
 DIM iInt AS Integer
 DIM j AS Integer

 IF InStr(txtInput.text, .) = 0 THEN 'no decimal entered ie assume in
 cents
   TRY iInt = Val(txtInput.text)
   IF ERROR THEN
 PRINT trapped 'do someting if it is not a number
   ENDIF
 ELSE
   iInt = Val(txtInput.text) * 10 ^ Val(txtDecPlaces.text) + 0.5 'multiply
 out
 ENDIF

 txtInteger.text = Str(iInt) 'display integer representation

 IF Len(txtInteger.text) Val(txtDecPlaces.text) THEN 'if the integer
 equivalent is long enough to accomodate the required dec places
   lblOutput.text = Str(Left(txtInteger.text, Len(txtInteger.text) -
 Val(txtDecPlaces.text)))  .  Str(Right(txtInteger.text,
 Val(txtDecPlaces.text)))
 ELSE 'pad out with leading zeroes
   lblOutput.text = Str(txtInteger.text)
   FOR j = Len(txtInteger.text) TO Val(txtDecPlaces.text) - 1
 lblOutput.text = 0  lblOutput.Text

Hi

The ghostwriters have been a bit ephemeral.

How about a simple:

To use a property name that is also a Gambas reserved name in your personal

For example:
Property Font as Font
Property Left as Integer

will both cause a compile error.

Property {Font} as Font
Property {Left} as Integer

will not.

2010-01-08 Thread charlesg

Hi

I don't mess around with pictures much so this may be the blind leading the
blind.

The command is: PictureBox1.Picture =
Picture.Load(/home/charles/Photos/SV45.JPG)

I could not get a response to a PictureBox1_keypress event so I buried a
textbox behind the picturebox, made sure it had focus and:

 PUBLIC SUB TextBox1_KeyPress()
   IF Key.text = a THEN
 PictureBox1.Picture =
 Picture.Load(/home/charles/Photos/SV45.JPG)
   ENDIF
 END

Remember that Key.text is case sensitive so you should test for that.

Re: [Gambas-user] set of questions

2009-10-23 Thread charlesg

Doriano

While you are busy dumping on yourself, let me join in: you are wrong.

1) You are wrong that you do not have a good command of the English
language. I have often marvelled (in that vaguely condescending British sort
of a way :)) how good your (in particular) and every contributors (in
general) English is. You write better English than half of Britain. This
does not say much but is intended as a compliment.

2) You are wrong that you do not know anything about Gambas. Less skilled
users, like myself, learn a lot from your contributions and your obvious
knowledge of Linux. There are complaints that some posts 'have nothing do do
with Gambas'. I do not accept that and suggest that most of the posts relate
to the interface between Gambas and Linux.

I am sure the problem here is that too many questions were asked in a single
post. I am also sure that Ron's response is a bite without venom.

The boss is an amazing chap: he writes and maintains Gambas, holds down a
job and is, I believe, a Thespian of repute. To avoid any unrecoverable read
errors, he needs the help of people like you on this forum.

Hopefully this answers question 2. It is a distillation of the database
example that comes with Gambas:

You just need a gridview, a button called btnRun and a preferably large
database with lots of columns so that you can scroll around with ease

'
' Gambas class file

'

  DIM sql AS String

  'open the database

.host = localhost
.Name = stock
.login = charles
.password=dog
  END WITH
  $hConnLocl.Open()

  'create a result
  sql = SELECT * FROM grnLine
  $resData = $hConnLocl.Exec(sql)
  END
'-
PUBLIC SUB btnRun_Click()
  DIM hForm AS FRequest
  DIM hField AS ResultField
  DIM iInd AS Integer

  GridView1.Rows.count = 0
  'set the required number of columns
  GridView1.Columns.count = $resData.Fields.Count

  'define the column headers and width
  FOR EACH hField IN $resData.Fields
WITH hField
  GridView1.Columns[iInd].text = .Name
  GridView1.Columns[iInd].width = 60
END WITH
INC iInd
  NEXT

  'create the empty rows. Each empty and visible cell created calls
GridView1_data
  GridView1.Rows.Count = $resData.Count
END

PUBLIC SUB GridView1_Data(Row AS Integer, Column AS Integer)
  'move to the required result row
  $resData.MoveTo(row)
  'set the data for the cell in the GridView from the column in the selected
row of the result
  GridView1.Data.text = Str($resData[GridView1.Columns[column].text])
  'lets you see how _data is being called as you scroll around the GridView

Re: [Gambas-user] How to sent a line line to a lp1 printer and form to lp0 printer directly.

2009-09-24 Thread charlesg

Hi,

I tried printing line-by-line directly to the raw device and got into awful
overlapping (? buffering) problems.

I think you would be far better to create a single line text file each time
and then print it with (for example):
SHELL cat /home/charles/tilRcpt/dev/lp0

It's blindingly quick and for me is absolutely reliable. As usual, I am sure
there are more elegent solutions :)

I also had to set write permission to the device in form_open something
like:
SHELL gksu -u root 'chmod a+rw /dev/lp0'
Its a pain to have to supply a password, but it only does it once.

[Gambas-user] Gridview not moving to last line in Gambas 3

2009-08-12 Thread charlesg

The following code works fine in 2.13 on Ubuntu 9.04 i386 and correctly
dispays the last line of the result in gridview gvAll

On 2.99 2224, however, the last line is not displayed or not fully
displayed. You have to scroll to show the last line. I thought it might have
something to do with the header but is the same whether the header is on or
off. It is also unaffected by the .mode of the gridview.

Re: [Gambas-user] Database example

2009-06-19 Thread charlesg

Hi

Thank you Ron for that. A bit more messing around and I think I now
understand it.

Following on from richard terry's suggestion for simple examples, here it is
as simple as I can get it. There is nothing new here: it all comes from the
database example. Any corrections to the annotations welcome!

You just need a gridview, a button called btnRun and a preferably large
database with lots of columns so that you can scroll around with ease

'
' Gambas class file
PUBLIC $hConnLocl AS NEW Connection
PUBLIC $resData AS Result
'
PUBLIC SUB Form_Open()
  DIM sql AS String

  'open the database
  WITH $hConnLocl
.type = mysql
.host = localhost
.Name = stock
.login = charles
.password=dog
  END WITH
  $hConnLocl.Open()

  'create a result
  sql = SELECT * FROM grnLine
  $resData = $hConnLocl.Exec(sql)
  END
'-
PUBLIC SUB btnRun_Click()
  DIM hForm AS FRequest
  DIM hField AS ResultField
  DIM iInd AS Integer

  GridView1.Rows.count = 0
  'set the required number of columns
  GridView1.Columns.count = $resData.Fields.Count

  'define the column headers and width
  FOR EACH hField IN $resData.Fields
WITH hField
  GridView1.Columns[iInd].text = .Name
  GridView1.Columns[iInd].width = 60
END WITH
INC iInd
  NEXT

  'create the empty rows. Each empty and visible cell created calls
GridView1_data
  GridView1.Rows.Count = $resData.Count
END
'-
PUBLIC SUB GridView1_Data(Row AS Integer, Column AS Integer)
  'move to the required result row
  $resData.MoveTo(row)
  'set the data for the cell in the GridView from the column in the selected
row of the result
  GridView1.Data.text = Str($resData[GridView1.Columns[column].text])
  'lets you see how _data is being called as you scroll around the GridView
  PRINT row  :  column  :
Str($resData[GridView1.Columns[column].text])
END
'--

I also created a second small form. As you move the second form around on
top of the gridview, the print command still shows the _Data frantically
working in the background. Clever things these computers!

[Gambas-user] Database example

2009-06-14 Thread charlesg

Hi,

I have extracted what I need from the database example. I can even get it to
do exactly what I want. But, in truth, I do not understand how it works
exactly.
'===
' FMain.class
PUBLIC $hConnLocl AS NEW Connection
PUBLIC $resData AS Result
'
PUBLIC SUB Form_Open()
  WITH $hConnLocl
.type = sqlite3
.Name = /home/charles/sqlite3/locl.sqlite
  END WITH
  $hConnLocl.Open()
  $resData = $hConnLocl.Exec(select * from hist)
END
'-
PUBLIC SUB btnRun_Click()
  DIM hForm AS FRequest

  hForm = NEW FRequest($hConnLocl, $resData)
  hForm.show
END
'===
' FRequest.class
PRIVATE $hConnlocl AS Connection
PRIVATE $rData AS Result
'-
PUBLIC SUB _new(hConnlocl AS Connection, rData AS Result)
  DIM hField AS ResultField
  DIM iInd AS Integer

  $hConnlocl = hConnlocl
  $rData = rData
  tbvData.Rows.count = 0
  tbvData.Columns.count = $rData.Fields.Count

  FOR EACH hField IN $rData.Fields
WITH hField
  tbvData.Columns[iInd].text = .Name
  tbvData.Columns[iInd].width = 60
END WITH
INC iInd
  NEXT
  tbvData.Rows.Count = $rData.Count
END
'-
PUBLIC SUB tbvData_Data(Row AS Integer, Column AS Integer)
  $rData.MoveTo(row)
  tbvData.Data.text = Str($rData[tbvData.Columns[column].text])
END
'===

My lack of understanding hinges around:
1.  hForm = NEW FRequest($hConnLocl, $resData)
2.  $hConnlocl = hConnlocl
$rData = rData
3. The help says _data is called when the tableview 'needs data'. At what
point in the code does it need this data?

Any fog elimination welcomed.

Hi,

It really helps to know your Gambas version and Linux distribution version.

Do you mean install or use?

To use gb.net: Go into your project then Project, properties, components and
click on gb.net. Check this first. If gb.net is not an option in the list
then you will have to install it for your Gambas version and distribution.

To install on Gambas 2.8 on Ubuntu 9.04: Go into Synaptic and click on
gambas2-gb-net. Then apply.

Re: [Gambas-user] sqlite integer to text string problem

2009-05-08 Thread charlesg

Hi,

SQLite is a bit unusual. As the FAQ at www.sqlite.org says, the field type
is is one of expectation rather than definition (with the exception of an
integer primary key). This is demonstrated in your example where you have
put real numbers (0.64) into an integer field. SQLite doesn't care: it
treats everything as a string anyway.

I suspect you will get the correct value within Gambas with val(res!sclose)
where res is the result of the connection.exec

Hi,

I have experienced this some time ago and it was not on ub904.

I have set your code on ub904 with built-in gam2.8 and confirm the error 11.

BUT, the fix is the same as it was in my case: get rid of the menu bar and
it compiles.

Just don't ask me what it means :)

Re: [Gambas-user] We should offer online Gambas courses!

2009-03-31 Thread charlesg

Hi all,

As one of the great unwashed (i.e. less proficient) Gambas users, I must say
that I prefer Richards approach using annotated code examples at a simple
level. I don't really feel comfortable with the idea of a paid-for tutorial
system and feel that 'we' as a user base should freely contribute to the
project. There is no chance of us ever equaling the stupendous contribution
of Benoit and to consider charging for any contribution that we make is, I
feel, not in the spirit of Gambas.

I wrote a small intro tutorial to Gambas which features quite well on a
Google search. I put it on a Wordpress blog so that I could get some stats.
It is currently viewed about 300 times a month.

Benoit has also kindly used a program of mine as a Gambas example. The
examples in Gambas could be extended with a beginners section although I
could see this ending up as being yet more work for Benoit.

Re: [Gambas-user] Ask About POS Programming using Gambas

2009-01-07 Thread charlesg

Hi,

I guess it is because you are printing to a raw device (/dev/lp0) which has
no buffering. Two paths for you to follow:

Install (and probably modify) a printer driver such as 'generic' through
CUPS. This will introduce a buffer to the printing process.

or

Use a (very) un-subtle workaround: trap the error. Loop on a 0.5 sec (or
whatever) delay and try again. I call it the Stalinist approach. Its a bit
like getting people to continually vote on a constitution until they get the
right answer.

[Gambas-user] Trumpets please!

2008-12-07 Thread charlesg

Hi,

Gambas 2.9.0 is on the coverdisk of my favourite Linux mag (Linux Format
LXF114 Jan 09) again. Some very nice comments in the magazine as well. Such
as ...has blossomed into one of the finest development environments in the
free software world - the Gambas team certainly has a lot to be proud of.

Also Gambas is, by a huge margin, the easiest way to dip your toe into open
source coding, and we simply can't recommend it enough.

All thoroughly deserved of course.

[Gambas-user] OOP and TextBox

2008-11-21 Thread charlesg

Hello,

I need more control of cell entry than can be provided by tableview. I have
laboriously placed textboxes over (and under) gridview cells in much the
same way I imagine that tableview itself is constructed. It works.

Not knowing much about OOP it strikes me that there must be an easier
solution. Can I create say forty textboxes programmatically and then move
from one to the other also under program control? I suppose what I am
looking for is textbox[] :-D. If that were possible then the following could
be reduced to one sub.

' Gambas class file
PUBLIC SUB txt1_KeyPress()
  IF Key.code = Key.right THEN
{dosomething with the entry then}
txt2.SetFocus
  ENDIF
END

PUBLIC SUB txt2_KeyPress()
  IF Key.code = Key.right THEN
{dosomething with the entry then}
txt3.SetFocus
  ENDIF
END

PUBLIC SUB txt3_KeyPress()
  IF Key.code = Key.right THEN
{dosomething with the entry then}
txt4.SetFocus
  ENDIF
END

PUBLIC SUB txt4_KeyPress()
  IF Key.code = Key.right THEN
{dosomething with the entry then}
txt1.SetFocus
  ENDIF
END

[Gambas-user] Ubuntu now installs Gambas 2.8.2

2008-10-04 Thread charlesg

Hi,

I see that Ubuntu now installs Gambas 2.8.2 by default. This is grand news.
I am interested to know whether such a change would have been instigated
from Ubuntu itself or from the Gambas community. I do not know how
Ubuntu/Debian select packages for inclusion.

If the impetus comes from Ubuntu/Debian then I am sure it is good news.

2.8.2 is also on the cover disk of the latest Linux Format (LXF111) magazine
though without much editorial comment. They do describe it as a structured,
modular language that's great for quickly hacking together graphical
programs.

Re: [Gambas-user] How to write to a file??

2008-09-18 Thread charlesg

Hi Brittany,

You have 2 options: write to a simple text file or write to a database.

Writing to a text file is simple.

'-
' Gambas class file
PUBLIC hFile AS File

PUBLIC SUB form_Activate()
  'create the file if it does not exist, otherwise just open it
  IF Exist(Application.path  /file.txt) THEN
hFile = OPEN Application.path /file.txt FOR WRITE APPEND
  ELSE
hFile = OPEN Application.path /file.txt FOR WRITE CREATE
  ENDIF
  TextBox1.SetFocus
END

PUBLIC SUB btnExit_Click()
  hFile.Close
  FMain.Close
END

PUBLIC SUB btnWrite_Click()
  'write the 2 textboxes to the File
  PRINT #hFile, TextBox1.text  ,  TextBox2.text
  'clear the textboxes and put the cursor back in the first
  TextBox1.text =
  TextBox2.text =
  TextBox1.SetFocus
END
'--

You can check the file (file.txt) by loading it in any text processor.
Because of the 'application.path', you will find it in the same directory as
your program.

Writing to a database is more flexible and a little more difficult. You can
create a simple SQLite database from Gambas though it is probably easier
using a very adequate add-on to Firefox (click Tools,add-ons and search
sqlite). You can see how to open and write to sqlite with a small tutorial
at www.kalaharix.wordpress.com.
