Re: [Audyssey] Audio Game Maker - Sneak Peek
Remember, too, how they made sounds in the 4j0's. Fire was not the crackling of wood, but of cellophane. I wouldn't use these types of sounds normally, but imagine a game set in the old west with an OTR feel--how freeing it would be to just decide what something should sound like and come up with weird ways to make it happen. These wouldn't be realistic of course, but it would be kind of funny... Ken Downey President DreamTechInteractive! And, Coming soon, Blind Comfort! As I said, I was thinking mostly in terms of ambient environmental effects here, sinse i do very much understand the danger of all games sounding the same. One problem though, is while ameter main stream game developers are quite free to draw their own graffics, ameter audio game developers can't be quite as free when it comes to recording or creating sounds. If I was the BBc radio workshop, and I wanted a fire effect in my game, I'd be quite free to build a fire of the appropriate size and stick a sensative mike near it. However, though I do have a very good mike, If I tried to build a fire I'd get chucked out of my colidge, and probably even taken to court as well. Obviously, for sounds it is possible to reccord, it'd be far better if people made their own sounds, but this can't go for everything. The only way i can see around this problem is to have as wide a variety of generic sounds available as possible, to give people the maximum amount of choice about what gets put into their games. for example, if there were 10 or 20 different wind effects on offer as opposed to just a couple, you could have ten games all with different wind sound effects, even if they each used a combination of three or four of them at a time (I know myself I'd want several effects for different environments). Imho the more choice in this matter, the better, though obviously my opinions as far as charactor sounds go are rather different. Beware the Grue! Dark. ___ Gamers mailing list .. I watched this movie from netflix called Word Play. It was about a national crossword competition and people who make design or play crosswords. Are there any blind crossword games out? Books? Internet accessable websites? Any that renew their puzzles regularly? I just wanted to try it out and wondered if it's even a thing that can be done. I won't deny I'm having such thoughts myself, but I'll want to learn a bit about how the Audio game maker works, test out a few ideas, maybe even produce a complete test game or two before I try doing something really major. but if things work out the way I'm thinking, hopefully audio rpgs from various people (possibly including myself, will be forthcoming. Hi Bryan, Well, not all rpg games are multi player such as Sryth which tends to follow one character as he/she works his or her way through the world of Sryth. Although, what you are thinking of a multiuser rpg where everyone can play together I don't see Audio Games Maker doing that. Making it say online playable adds a completely different demention to gaming as well as programming. Bryan Peterson wrote: It still sounds confusing to me, but I imagine that once I can actually sitdown and play with Audio Game Maker a bit I might get the hang of it. The only thing I don't like about it so far, and I acknowledge that I could be wrong about it, is that it doesn't look as though you can create a true RPG. That is, where you have a party of several controlable characters. A very simple RPG like Dragon Warrior I might be possible, but since you're apparently only allowed to have one player it doesn't look as though we'll be creating any Final Fantasy type games, unless future updates of the program allow the creation f multiple controllable characters. As for my current idea, it's a Metroid style audio game, although how doable that will be with this program is still in question. No no, that's not what I meant. I was thinking of something like the original Final Fantasy or even later installments of the series, where the game was still single player, but the player had control of a party of four or even five characters. There was no online play involved. Think of it as STFC in a fantasy setting, where the player controls four or five people, except that you travel around the world in realtime and only the battles are turn-based. You select what character attacks whom and how they attack, except you can only attack once per turn. It ain't pretty when the pretty leaves you with no place to go. J.D.
