Re: [Audyssey] pack man versus sarah, a lot of questions from an itching curious gamer

2007-03-04 Thread Dark
Indeed Phil, sounds fantastic!

As I've said before, exploration is one of my favourite things in games,
particularly when there are alternative areas and other things to be
discovered (hence my liking for Metroid).

I'm glad to see that both in Sarah, and in Monti this aspect of gaming is
finally being realized in Audio.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

 Hi Phil,
]Wow, sounds like Sarah has sure changed since the last major public
beta of the game. I also like the fact there is less of an exact liniar
progression to the game. As I understand it areas like the Chamber of
Secrets is sort of an unlockable bonus level or secret area you can
explore, but is not required for completion of the main game.
I've seen Star Wars games etc like this. If you blew up a certain wall,
tanks, etc you would find doorways in to bonus levels or areas with
power ups, weapons, you ordenarily could not obtain, but were not
 necessary for finishing the game.

Re: [Audyssey] bomb blaster!

2007-03-04 Thread Dark
Hi Damien.

the game sounds good, especially if you can get some atmospherically nasty
audio for it.

How about on later levels adding some light elements to the game, such as
finding keys and unlocking doors.

I hope you don't mind, but I've also posted a news item about Bomb blaster's
developement on audiogames.net, so that people not subscribed to this list
will be able to know about the game's developement.

Hope this is okay with you.

all the best,

Dark.

Hi everyone,
This is your friendly neighborhood moderator. I feel the Vista topics

with gaming which this list primarily deals with.
However, before I close this message I would like to direct those

[Audyssey] sarah

2007-03-04 Thread nicol
HI phil and thom
Thanks a million. You cleared up my uncertainties.
If I understood the manual correctly you can use your patranous charms
unlimited times. The manual says: you need to give your patronous charm a
clearly defined form, in other words the more you use them the longer they
will last.
So do I understand the manual correctly that it means unlike my aparation
spells which is limited, I have unlimited use of my pattronous charms?
I'm not intending to ask for spoilers, I just want to know if I understand
that part of the manual correctly.
sincerely

Hi,

Speaking about contests, a few weeks or months ago I was thinking about some
system to promote your games. I thought of a contest where people have to
beat each other (highest score, best time) in a freeware game. That game
would be a sort of demo for a more extended shareware game. The one with the
best results obtains a free copy of this full game, and the others are
triggered to purchase it, because they've played the demo. You could do such
a contest every two or three months.
Of course this is only possible if you offer shareware games, but I think

[Audyssey] sarah haloween sneek preview

2007-03-04 Thread nicol
HI phil
I had a listen to your sneek preview of the divination classroom. I noticed
a few things.
Was it the sleeping troll you passed?
The same troll the manual talked about? The manual asked: Can You race
past the sleeping troll before it wakes up?
I heard you saying something about dancing trolls.
The voice while you were walking, is it sarah alawami's voice?
I noticed that once you entered the divination classroom sappi asked you to
select a voice and the kate voice was reading the deck of cards.
But before you entered the divination classroom, the voice I heard: was
it sarah's voice?
I noticed sarah said something about: taxi in 7 feet.
Is it also a creature?

 Hi Matthew,
To my knolege. A user can have admin rights, but the system will still
prompt you to confirm an action that will change system wide settings,
installing programs, or running uncirtified programs for the first time.
Windows Vista is a much more secure operating environment than XP etc...
The changes were put in place to crack down on viruses, spyware, and
other applications none of us want, and while it is a bit to get use to
I do feel the changes are in the end benificial to the average end user.

Its sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry developed by phil
vlaseck from pcs games.
The game has not yet been released. Phil put up a file on his site long ago,
it was a sneek preview of the divination classroom on floor7.
He will let everyone know when the game is available.
Hay phil btw why did you choose the divination classroom for the sneek
preview? It would be interesting if you could do a sneek preview of sarah
on the ground floor scaring a ghost.
Just my thought.

Re: [Audyssey] sarah

2007-03-04 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Nicol,
You have a limited number of patranous charms,
and the first few times you use them they do not last as long.
But if you find another wand and pick it up you get more of them.
There are six wands in the game including the one you start with, and you
can find another in the demo.
You also get more spells the first time you read the textbook about
patranous charms.
Each time you use a spell it cost a little of your magical energy which you
can find out by hitting the m key.
But there are several ways to increase your energy and drinking cups of
coffee is not one of them.
That is a reference to the coffee machine puzzle in Shades of Doom.
There is a nice tea service in the kitchen that will help you out but you
can only drink it once.
I will have to check out that section in the manual to make it clearer.
Phil

 HI phil and thom
Thanks a million. You cleared up my uncertainties.
If I understood the manual correctly you can use your patranous charms
unlimited times. The manual says: you need to give your patronous charm a
clearly defined form, in other words the more you use them the longer they
 will last.
So do I understand the manual correctly that it means unlike my aparation
spells which is limited, I have unlimited use of my pattronous charms?
I'm not intending to ask for spoilers, I just want to know if I understand
that part of the manual correctly.

You could make some levels randomised so you you will never know what enemy

Re: [Audyssey] sarah haloween sneek preview

2007-03-04 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Nicol,
On the seventh floor there is a tapestry of dancing trolls but they stay in
the tapestry and do not attack you.
It is described as a tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy being clubbed by trolls
A tapestry is a painting made of colored thread.
When you are directly in front of the tapestry you will hear Sarah Alawami
say Wow!
Those who read the fifth HP book will probably know what that means.
A hint, it is her concentrating hard on what she needs.

What you heard Sarah Alawami say in the classroom is,
Doxie in 73 feet.
The doxie's are flying bugs that can bite you.
But you may find a bottle of Doxie poison antidote in the castle somewhere.

 HI phil
I had a listen to your sneek preview of the divination classroom. I
 noticed
 a few things.
Was it the sleeping troll you passed?
The same troll the manual talked about? The manual asked: Can You race
past the sleeping troll before it wakes up?
I heard you saying something about dancing trolls.
The voice while you were walking, is it sarah alawami's voice?
I noticed that once you entered the divination classroom sappi asked you
 to
select a voice and the kate voice was reading the deck of cards.
But before you entered the divination classroom, the voice I heard:
 was
 it sarah's voice?
I noticed sarah said something about: taxi in 7 feet.
 Is it also a creature?

 Step1:
 I went to www.kitchensinc.net.
 Step2
 I clicked on
click here for free windows sapi5 text to speech games
 step3
I brought up the jaws find dialogue with control+f.
 Step4
I typed: wintgf5 and hit enter.
I got an error message box: search item not found.
 I couldn't find wintgf5.
 There's wintgf1, wintgf2, wintgf3, wintgf4, then the lists goes on to

 There's definitely no wintgf5.

something about it, but I couldn't find any info on where to download it,
 or
how to purchase it. I'd really love to buy this game if it is indeed been
released so any info would be appreciated.

Its sarah and the castle of witchcraft and wizardry developed by phil
 vlaseck from pcs games.
The game has not yet been released. Phil put up a file on his site long
 ago,
it was a sneek preview of the divination classroom on floor7.
He will let everyone know when the game is available.
Hay phil btw why did you choose the divination classroom for the sneek
preview? It would be interesting if you could do a sneek preview of
 sarah
on the ground floor scaring a ghost.
 Just my thought.

[Audyssey] Game Boy Advance

Can anyone tell me if there are any accessible games for the Game Boy

The GBA may be outdated, but games developed for the GBA should run on the
DS. Also, the DS is wifi and it's possible to upload files to it from a PC,
so there are no hardware costs. I've downloaded a GBA emulator so in theory
I should be able to create a game and get it into a DS. The question is
whether it's worthwhile doing.

Well, there's at least 3 different answers depending on your approach.
There's the whole DirectX approach using DirectSound, or you can use an
ActiveX multimedia control or you can use the Windows API. I used a
multimedia control in the early days but had some compatibility problems
 and
on some systems there were huge delays between playing the WAV files which
made the games unusable. I now use the API because it works on anything
 and
doesn't give hassles but the problem I have with it is that you issue a
command to play a WAV file but you can't check the status to see if it's
finished. Consequently, I have to use the sync and async flags - sync
 means
play the WAV before you process the next command and async carries on. So,
if the score is made of several WAV files I'd have to play all but the
 last
one in sync mode, which means the computer isn't doing anything else -
 like
processing the keyboard - while the score is being announced.

sorry I misspelled it. It's video chaining or video intercept. This means
 in
the internal workings of the screen reader the screen reader from what I
understand it makes a copy of the screen in a part of the computers memory
that can be reviewed with cursors like the jaws cursor and which makes it
much easier for the screen reader to access the operating system. I realy
don't know much about how it works.

 Hi Sky,

I can't remember off hand where the review was. I listened to a demo of
 it
on VIP Conduit a few weeks back and it was well received. I know it has
 its
critics because it obviously hasn't got the power of commercial screen
readers. I looked at writing a screen reader a few months ago and made
 a
start on it but then I found Thunder and figured that my version was
unlikely to be any better and there was no way I could compete with
 their
price, so there was little point continuing.

Thunder may not be very powerful but my hunch is that people who may
 once
have bought Guide, which is an all-in-one package (word-processor and
 email)
for computer beginners, would be better off using Thunder and Wordpad
 and
 Outlook Express.

The other thing about Thunder is that it was written in Visual Basic
 and
 I
think I read somewhere they were looking to work with developers to
 improve
 the product.

Anyway, I really just mentioned Thunder because it's already out there
 and
free and clearly Tom has his hands full with Monty and Raceway.

 Cheers,
 Steve

play the WAV before you process the next command and async carries on.
 So,
if the score is made of several WAV files I'd have to play all but the
 last
one in sync mode, which means the computer isn't doing anything else -
 like
processing the keyboard - while the score is being announced.

 Hey yall,
Could anyone point me in the right direction as to how to code the
 speaking
of a player's score using wave files? I know, of course, how to set up
 the
files, just not how or when to play them, or how to cue them so they
 don't
play all at once. also, how do you check to see if a sound is playing?

[Audyssey] A big change to wrecking ball

2007-03-04 Thread Ken the Crazy
I will post this to the AgDev developers list too, but using VB6, does anyone
know how to get mouse movements and limit the mouse to the current window so
people aren't clicking on the desktop? I have decided that though using the
keyboard was effective in Enemy Attack, it totally sucks when you're trying to
control paddles because you can't get the angles you want sometimes. I liked
the idea of a breakout pinball table, but I feel it is time to take the next
step and go mouseward. I'll leave the keyboard the way it is for those who
don't want to use a mouse..

Of course this is only possible if you offer shareware games, but I think
that it would add much more multiplayability to a game.

sorry I misspelled it.

 Cheers,
 Steve

Sky, there are some free screenreaders out there already. One that got

 for

you wouldn't get described pictures unless the descriptions were written out
in text within the image, but let's say you're playing grand theft auto and
want to know what your current menu options are--you hit the OCR button and
a list of options appears. If it could recognize check marks or highlights

Anyway, I really just mentioned Thunder because it's already out
 there
 and
free and clearly Tom has his hands full with Monty and Raceway.

 Cheers,
 Steve

Yeah, and what about the tutorial you promised on writing an
 Asteroids
 game?

Sky, there are some free screenreaders out there already. One that
 got
 a
pretty good review recently was Thunder, which you can download at
 http://www.screenreader.net/index.php?section=Thunder. It's not just
 for
 XP
and works for Win2K as well.

Actually, there is a way to see if a file is playing. Here is the
 sequence.
I feel dumb because I asked about it on list and it's right there in my
 enemy attack game.
 Do While dsStartup.GetStatus = DSCBSTATUS_CAPTURING
   DoEvents
  Loop

Well, there's at least 3 different answers depending on your approach.
There's the whole DirectX approach using DirectSound, or you can use an
ActiveX multimedia control or you can use the Windows API. I used a
multimedia control in the early days but had some compatibility problems
 and
on some systems there were huge delays between playing the WAV files
 which
made the games unusable.

 Hey yall,
Could anyone point me in the right direction as to how to code the
 speaking
of a player's score using wave files? I know, of course, how to set up
 the
files, just not how or when to play them, or how to cue them so they
 don't
play all at once. also, how do you check to see if a sound is playing?
