Re: [Audyssey] Idea for Kitchens Inc Game

2007-09-20 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Samuel,

I am sorry, but I have never heard of that game or played it and am really not
familiar with that part of the world. So I will not be recreating it as a
Kitchen's Inc game.

Sorry about that.

Hello, I have an idea for a kitchensinc game. There is a game on a comedy show
on the radio called I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue called Mornington Crescent, but
it doesn't involve much comedy. I believe the basic description of the rules is
that you have to make moves to London underground stations and places to get to
Mornington Crescent station, though I could be wrong. The best thing to do is
look on Wikipedia and type in Mornington Crescent game and press enter on the
link and you can read the full rules.

Re: [Audyssey] deal or no deal

2007-09-20 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Josh,

Thank you for the suggestion and rules for the game, but at this time I will
not be making a Deal Or No Deal game.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi,

It would be cool to have a deal or no deal game as a kitchen's inc game.
here are the rules for it. Only difference being might as well just use
American dollars.

Deal or No Deal involves a contestant, a host/presenter, a banker, and a
number of briefcases (or boxes), with each having a different (and initially
unknown)
value. Each game starts with the contestant selecting one of the cases-this
first case's value is not known until the game ends. During the rest of the
game, the contestant opens the rest of the cases, one at a time, revealing
its value. Each time after a specified number of cases are opened, the
banker
offers the contestant a certain amount of money to end the game. If the
contestant takes an offer, the game ends, otherwise the contestant ends up
with
the money from the first case.

Since the range of possible values for cases is known at the start of each
game, how much the banker offers at any given point changes based on what
cases
have been eliminated. To promote
suspense
and lengthen games, the banker's offer usually strays from the
expected value
 dictated by
probability theory
, particularly early in the game.
[1]
However it is not uncommon for the bank's offer to exceed the player's
expected value very late in the game.[citation needed]

Worldwide, the largest amount offer (in terms of exchange rates) was
?1,495,000 on the original Miljoenenjacht, on November 13, 2005 (which was
accepted;
the contestant's case only had ?1,000).[citation needed]
Only a few people have ever won the top prize on any version of the show.

Re: [Audyssey] Error with Kitchensinc games under Vista.

2007-09-20 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

I'm thinking that this would be the same for any and all games that write to a
file such as a save game file, a log file, a records file or whatever right?
As far as I know just about every single game does this. So I am thinking that
this is not a problem with my games, but a problem that Vista creates and thus
the Vista user is going to have to learn to deal with it not only for my games
but for all games. And truthfully you are the first to mention this and I know
many people that are playing my games in Vista. Plus you didn't even have this
problem before in Vista with my games.

BTW Thank you very much for the offer, but never mind the winkit.exe file. I'm
good to go already Dude. Have been for years. Very much hope that you have
not already put too much work into it.

BFN

- Original Message -
Hi Jim and all,
I'm writing to let you know I discovered an issue with all of your games
under Vista you might want to be advised of. It is a rather nasty bug,
but there are solutions to the problem. Though, unless you plan to make
changes in your applications to fix it the bug will remain a pain for
Vista users.
As you might be aware Vista's user account control manages what programs
a user can start, where he or she can save files, who can do installs,
etc... It is a huge pain in the neck for those who got use to the way XP
did things, and what XP allowed you to get away with Bottom line, I've
been researching the issue and apparently under Vista each user is
suppose to save settings locally to his or her applications data folder,
documents folder, etc rather than globally saving to a place such as
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
Which is a big no under Vista. Apparently, XP was the same, but it
wasn't as pushy about it. The days of globally saving to the
applications root directory are over.
Anyway, according to Microsoft's security knowledge base every Vista
system should have at least one "administrator account" and one
"standard user account" for maximum security. Like Linux under Vista the
administrator account is responsible for software installs, system wide
configurations, and other system management tasks where high user rights
is required. The standard account is for playing games, reading and
writing email, browsing the web, and any other day to day tasks.
However, do to security restrictions on the standard account your games
aren't really playable as a standard user. When I try to save the voice
settings, or save a game, I get the error that I can not write to the
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc
folder because it is restricted.
There are some solutions to the problem you can address other than
rewriting your programs to operate correctly in Vista's multiuser
environment.
1. Have the end user install the kitchensinc folder locally to his or her
c:\Users\User Name
directory. Where "User Name" is his or her user name he/she logs into
Vista with, and create a custom icon pointing to winkit.exe.
2. The user can elect to log into Vista with the administrator account
and play games as administrator. That will work, but is less secure.
3. Under the kitchensinc directory the end user can arrow to each of the
*.exe files, press alt+enter to enter the properties, control+tab, and
set the *.exe files to elevate automatically to administrator. What will
happen every standard user will be prompted to enter the administrator
password before launching the games. A bit of a pain, but will work as a
work around.
Hth.

Hi Robert,

That's pretty cool that you found VB6 code for a Deal Or No Deal game. So do
you plan to tweak the code to make it more blind accessible?

As I mentioned, I do not plan at this time to work on a Deal Or No Deal game.
Inspiration has already struck me big time and I have gotten a pretty good
start on a new game. The title of the game comes from a really cool figurine

one of the most interesting files I downloaded frm this site a short time

It was more geared to a sighted person in its interface, and the code was
for a british version of deal or no deal.
The money amounts were in british pounds.
but it did work quite nice, and will work better with a blind person
tweaking the code.
It would really shine if we can get some audio bits from the real show to
mix into the game.

[Audyssey] Demo Times - Update

After much wrangling, Marketing changed the demo times to 7 days for the

I used your comments and comments from other sources to whack them over the
head.

Thanks to Dark, Thomas, Kelly, Tristan, Willem, Daniel, Zachary, Charles,

Re: [Audyssey] Demo Times - Update

2007-09-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi John,
Glad they increased the demo length to seven days. That seams much more
reasonable than they were previously willing to offer.
Though, I think we all know the marketing types. They are so interested
in how to market the product, chase after that almighty dollar, protect
their own interests, etc that they lose sight of what would realisticly
work for users.
One day in my opinion is not enough time to evaluate anything
effectively. At least with the new sevenday polacy I could have a full
week to explore the games and find out if they are something I'd be
interested in purchasing.

Hi Jim,

End quote

I've just tested this with several other games and you are correct.
Allot of older accessible games are going to be facing this problem
under Vista. The issue is that Vista and XP are more multiuser
environments than say 98. If you run a game as administrator they will
work ok. However, if you setup a multiuser environment such as I have
for myself and my wife and then the games are going to encounter
difficulties. Especially, with non-administrator users.

Quote
> As far as I know just about every single game does this. So I am thinking

End quote

Yes and no. With Windows 98 it was not real important where you saved
your game settings since 98 was meant for single users, and less a
multiuser environment. With Windows 2000, XP, and Vista all program
settings should go into the
c:\Documents And Settings\User Name\Applications Data
folder rather than being saved to the applications root directory.
Saving to the applications root directory is fine if there is only going
to be one user account on the system, the administrator account, as the
user will have the rights to save to that application root directory. If
more than one user is setup then the game has to use the user's
Application Data folder instead.
I've checked out montezuma's Revenge, and truthfully I made the same
mistake as everyone else. However, I am now researching the issue, and
trying to see how to make the game operate in a multiuser environment
rather than a single user environment.
Bottom line, it is a problem with your games in that they were not
designed for networked or multiuser setups under Vista which is now the
rule and not the exception to the rule. I made the same mistake, and I
understand where you were coming from in designing your games as you did.

Quote
> And truthfully you are the first to mention this and I know many people
> that are playing my games in Vista. Plus you didn't even have this problem
> before in Vista with my games.
> End quote
>

I didn't have this problem before because I had Vista setup as a single
user environment, and I was playing the games using the administrator
acount with administrator rights. I am suspecting the user's you have
just mentioned were doing the same. They don't have a multiuser
environment configured thus never encountered the issue.
However, Microsoft does state that using the system in this way is less
secure than a standard user account for day to day tasks and an
administrator account for system changes.
As for the tone of this message I'm not sure, but I sense some anger or
friction in the way you worded your responces. All I will say is that my
intent was not to flame, anger, put down, or in anyway put you or your
games down. I merely was offering information about the problem i found,
and I gave you three possible solutions to the problem users could try
if they encounter the same issue I am having with your games in a
multiuser environment.

2007-09-20 Thread Robert Montowski
Last night I had my Sound RTS v8 server up and running.
the server name was RCM.
a Player named Rameriz logged in and challenged me to two games.
Both games were in MultiPlayer game 3.
I don't know if he quit both games or the connection was lost.
We had no battles in either game.
But we were in both games for only about 8 minutes when the game announced I
was the winner.
If Rameriz is on this list can you tell me what happened.
If this is a server problem on my end I wish to fix it soonest.

Re: [Audyssey] deal or no deal

2007-09-20 Thread jason
Hay Man that's sounds like a good idea. We can even have Houwie Mandell's
voice in there.
I hope that this game can take off in the future. I also enjoy playing this
game.
I want to see a developer develop a reality games. For example games like
Survivor, Kid Nation, Amazing race, The Apprentice, Benefactor or something
like Wife Swap.
It would be cool in a way if we can have our own reality game.

Hello,

I have released an English translation of SoundMUD 0.9.

SoundMUD contains an incomplete action-roleplay multiplayer game and
an ancestor of SoundRTS. It is not really as mature as SoundRTS, and I
am not working on it now, but it may be interesting to try it anyway.

The URL is: http://jlpo.free.fr/soundmud

Hi will.

I don't know whether the 7-128 gamebook games work with window eyes or not
(it certainly didn't work with Hal v6, but I'll try it with V7 soon which
has more Java support), but just press equals to use in built speech in the
game.

For what games are accessible, check the ratings system on the site. games
listed with a Bl rating are fully playable with sound only.

Re: [Audyssey] football score

2007-09-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi TJ,
Typically in Jim's Football game a simple goal line does wonders for
holding down the aposing teams offense. However, I do different
defensive plays depending on what I think the aposing team is going to
try. If I think they are going to do a running play I will try say a
goal line. If I think they are going for a pass I will do a defensive
pass formation in hopes of intercepting, blocking, or finding someway to
defend against the pass I think is coming.
Needless to say in my last game the Chief's made only one field goal. I
beat them 16 to 3. As of this morning the Cowboys have a 7 and 0
undefeated winning streak. I'm now number one for the NFC championship.

Re: [Audyssey] football score

2007-09-20 Thread jason
Hi Tj unfortunately you can't run formations in Kitchen's game how ever what
I would do is use the defensive play that best works for you. I was saying
those different formations because when you use those plays in football in
the real game they form a formation.
Anyway the best thing I would is run and pass the ball at times that's what
usually wears a team down. Another way is just simply running the ball as
well.
I hople this helps

Jason

Hi.

About the tracks on the Rail racer page. Firstly, what is the difference
betwene official and user created tracks?

secondly, where do I put them once I've downloaded them?

do the official tracks go into the game tracks folder and the user tracks into
the user tracks folder?

As I really like racing the various tracks and getting nasty surprises, any
advice would e much appreciated,

thanks in advance.

Re: [Audyssey] Error with Kitchensinc games under Vista.

2007-09-20 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi,
First, i think I should clarify a couple of things. Just in case anyone
gets confused here is clearer explanation of what I was talking about.
In Windows Vista all applications typically save their settings in the
c:\Users\User Name\App Data folder,
which use to be the
c:\Documents And Settings\User Name\Application Data
folder under Windows XP,
and where Vista expects to find settings for games, and other programs.
Each user should have his her on local settings rather than globally
saved to say
c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc.
However, if you have Vista setup as a single user, only one account, you
should haveno problems with any games since you will have Administrator
rights. However, if you have multiple user accounts then you are going
to encounter problems with several accessible games and not just
Kitchensinc games. Any game that needs to write to the
c:\Program Files\
directory to save a game, save settings, will be denied by user accoun
control for non-administrator accounts.
The solution I propose in that case is to install the games locally for
a user in some place such as
c:\Users\Your User name\Games
where "Your User Name" is the user name of the person you are
installing the games for.
For example, I put my kitchensinc games in
c:\Users\Thomas\Games\Kitchensinc\
and have an icon pointing to the winkit file. Since that is a local path
for my user name I have no problem saving games or changing game settings.
I had a similar problem with GMA's Tank Commander so I installed it to
c:\Users\Thomas\Games\Tank Commander
and now have no issues saving games.
I'll note I have my latop setup for multiple users. I am also running
without administrator rights because that is more secure, and aids inthe
provention of viruses, trogen horses, and other malware. It is to bad
not many of the blind users out there are aware of these security
measures, but anyway that is the way my laptop is setup.

[Audyssey] Game Book won't Load

2007-09-20 Thread John Bannick
Will,

Dark's right.
The short answer solution for you is just wait for the ticking to end, then
press the Equals key.
Then wait for maybe a minute until the self-voicing tells you it is on.

The long answer follows:

The startup sequence the very first time you run the Game Book just after
you install it is:

1. A WAV file says "The 7-128 Software Game Book is now loading"

2. The audio progress bar sounds ticks that get higher in pitch until the
program is loaded.
It's important to wait for maybe a minute until the speech stuff loads.

3. Then the self-voicing says "When this Game Book first starts, the Game
Voice is OFF.
To turn the Game Voice on and off at any time, press the Equals key."

4. If you are not using JAWS, press the Equals key at this point.
Wait for the Game Voice to say "Game Voice is on"

When you exit the Game Book, it remembers that you had the Game Voice
turned on.

The next time, and subsequent times, you start the Game Book:

1. The WAV file says the same thing as before.

2. The audio progress bar ticks upwardly exactly as before.
Again, wait maybe a minute for the speech stuff to load.

3. Then the self-voicing says "Message Dialog. Game Voice is on. 7-128
Software Game Book 1.2 Home page. 7 Day Demo. 1 Home Page Button"

4. At this point, press the Enter key repeatedly, waiting for the program
to speak to you, until the first game starts.
Or, once you know the controls, you can just press the 2 key or 3 key etc.

I'm not thrilled with the time it takes for all the speech stuff to load.
But no one here has figured out to make it faster.

Do you think we should make the prompts (not the story text) into WAV files?
It would increase the size of the installation, but wouldn't leave people
wondering what was happening.

[Audyssey] reality games for the PC - Re: deal or no deal

2007-09-20 Thread Charles Rivard
The same could be said for Survivor. The closest thing to it would be some
sort of online role playing game, but it just would not be the same. I
don't see how Big Brother would work realistically, either.

Re: [Audyssey] Rail racer tracks question

2007-09-20 Thread Sylvester Thomas
Greetings Dark! You have it correct. The official Tracks go in the
official Tracks folder, and the User Tracks go into the User Tracks folder.
The deal is Users can up load tracks they have created to the user track
page on the site for all to download. Then you can comment on the tracks
and based on user feedback Chee will promote a user track to official track
status. What this does is allow you to earn money and post track times on
them. You cannot do any of this on a user track, they are again just there
to share with the community. HTH! and Happy Racing! Sly, A K A, The
Bandit!

Re: [Audyssey] Error with games under Vista.

2007-09-20 Thread Phil Vlasak
Hi Tom,
I am glad you found the Vista problem for Jim Kitchen and the GMA games.
I want to add this section to my Sarah game instructions and will add your
name as part author if you wish:
Running the Sarah game under Vista:
In Windows Vista all applications typically save their settings in the
c:\Users\User Name\App Data folder,
which use to be the
c:\Documents And Settings\User Name\Application Data
folder under Windows XP,
and where Vista expects to find settings for games, and other programs.
Each user should have their games saved on local folders rather than
globally saved to say
c:\Program Files\Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry 10.
However, if you have Vista setup as a single user, only one account, you
should have no problems with any games since you will have Administrator
rights. However, if you have multiple user accounts then you are going
to encounter problems with several accessible games and not just PCS games.
Any game that needs to write to the
c:\Program Files\
directory to save a game, save settings, will be denied by user account
control for non-administrator accounts.
The solution I propose in that case is to install the games locally for a
user in some place such as
c:\Users\Your User name\Games
where "Your User Name" is the user name of the person you are installing
the games for.
For example, for my Vista computer, I put my Sarah game in
c:\Users\Phil\Games\PCS\
so the full path to the Sarah game folder is,
c:\Users\Phil\Games\PCS\Sarah and the Castle of Witchcraft and Wizardry 10.
I also have an icon pointing for the Sarah game to the SCW.EXE file.
Since that is a local path for my user name I have no problem saving games
or changing game settings.

I suggest having your Vista computer setup for multiple users, and also
running without administrator rights because that is more secure, and aids
in the
prevention of viruses, Trojan horses, and other malware. It is too bad
not many of the blind users out there are aware of these security measures.

[Audyssey] sports games for sega

2007-09-20 Thread Josh
Hi,

Were the football and baseball games for sega back in the mid 90s like 1992
1995 accessible to us? if so maybe I could get a sega emulator and if it
works with the keyboard I could try it out. I miss playing the old street
fighter games for sega that my brother and I played together back in the mid
90s. I wonder if I could get them as sega roms for emulators on the pc now?
