Re: [Audyssey] which x box games are usable
Most fighting games are usable. Sports games like some of the football games and baseball games are usable, and also musical games such as Rock Band and Guitar Hero are playable, AKA Usable. Not to mention demos which you can download to your console (XBox without sighted help fortunately), but yeah. It doesn't matter what console you use. Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?
Agreed Tom. A well written standardized dungeon crawl, as in Eamon can be a fun litle diversion, but for a true exploration setting I deffinately want more background and detail. I think many writers, (particularly of pvp heavy grinders), have been very lazy in just snipping superficial elements from tolkeen without actually writing any propper details of the world's overall plot, how the adventure figures into things, or what races actually are. Once again though Sryth, Arborell (where there's even an entire gamebook, and upcoming series playing as a non human race), and the Lone wolf series have all done this very well. But world building in scifi is something we've just not seen yet. Strictly speaking, the final fantasy games, - particularly later entries in the series are actually much closer to scifi than traditional sf, sinse the world, technology and history is very much magitech, magic, robots, airshipsand weapons ranging from firearms through swords to lasers. this was one reason my first big writing project was a novelization of the Ps1 rpg Xenogears, that I found the world so intreaguing. Again though, this is a style of world and game we've just not seen done in text, other than a few hints in lone wolf. I'd personally be more in favor of a freshly created world for the game than using an existing one. Much as I'm a fan of Doctor who, Startrek etc (and rapidly becoming a bigger fan of the starwars universe), imho discovery of the world itself and it's races is one of the most fun elements of a game. That's why i love the background entries in Sryth. On the other hand, in a pre-done world, you do have the fun of exploring locations such as the jedi temple or ds9 yourself, with your own character, rather than just having to sit back and watch or read about them. Personally, if it was me I'd be more in favour of a unique game world, but again, i'm not the one doing the programming, and it's just a difference of style I think. Btw, i am at the moment planning a gamebook for the june Arborell competition. I have a section plan, plopt and unique setting myself fixed, and it's only necessary now to write in the actual adventure pages (which to me is the fun bit), which will probably be my contribution to world building games I think. Re: [Audyssey] Top Speed 2 Utility Pack
Hi, seems that X-sight does not really care about the end user's VB libraries during the installation process. Those runtime errors are mostly caused by a missing library or having a different version than the one that is required by the pack, etc.I've had just a single error that prevented me from even starting the pack, saying that the file comdlg32.ocx or one of its dependencies was not correctly registered or invalid. I fixed that by downloading the file from a website and everything runs greatly since then. Although everything seemed as if I had all required libraries and the most up-to-date versions, I had to download this one from an external source. So perhaps including the required files in the installation package would fix a lot of these issues people are having. As for selecting a server, you can easily work around the pack in a faster and perhaps more efficient way. Just open the topspeed.cfg file in the game folder and find the last line of text, containing the following string: multiplayer= Just write the ip address there after the = sign, save the changes, and you are good to go. Re: [Audyssey] Eamon deluxe great fun!
The installation file .edx is a simple zip file. you can extract it using winrar, but then you'll have to go in to the game folder and change some .bas files to point to the new directory. At 01:46 PM 2/01/2009, you wrote: Hi. Other than doing some whacky things with the edx directory (which I've personally not got to work), you can't change the install location, it just defaults to installing into C:\Eamondelux Fortunately, it's not a big folder, doesn't cause any issues with other programs, is quite easy to create shortcuts to to make a program group (as I've done), and can just be deleted streight off if you have a problem with the game. while for neetness I would've liked the game installed into either my fun program files or text games directories, i really don't worry about it being where it is. Hello. I'm really sorry, Eamon has been under discussion for a while now on the list, but obviously having just joined you wouldn't have come across it, I should really have thought of that. No, eamon isn't a mud (I don't myself really know much about or play muds, but that's another topic). It's a text adventure and rpg system originally created in the 1980's for Aple computers, with literally hundreds (about 250 I think) of different adventures written for it over the years by many people. Eamon Delux is a pc port which comes with many, possibly all, the adventures. you can read about, and download it at at http://www.eamonag.org/pages/eamondx.htm As I said, I'm well impressed with the game thus far, however there are a few things you need to do to get it to run properly and interact with a dscreen reader ssmoothly: 1: unfortunately, Eamon delux starts of is in a dos style console window, and begins running fullscreen, at which point a screen reader can't interact with the window, so you'll need to press alt enter to get it back to a doss window again. You'll probably have to do this whenever you go back to the main hall or start an adventure, but the rest of the time things will be fine and it doesn't cause trouble as long as you know it's needed (you'll probably have to do this for the initial installing process as well). 2: The main hall, where you buy weapons and spells and from where your character can go on the various adventures, by default runs a graphical, and consequencially inaccessible version. You'll need to go to the utilities menue when you've installed the program (7th option on the main menue), and select the second option there which will use the text version of the main hall. 3: irritatingly, running in a window, some text will be chopped off the screen. Thanks to Steven for letting me know, this is however easily fixable. Open the eamondx.bas file with notepad and change the line: Screen 0width 40 cls colour 4.0 To read width 80 (I suggest just finding the word width with ctrl f and changing it to 80), and all text should appear fine. Then, just have fun! imho Eamon is a really nice mix of combat and interactive fiction style puzles, and has a rather interesting experience system. I also like the fact that you take the save character on multiple adventures and get experience with them in weaponry and such, as well as earning lots of gold. anyway, i hope this helps. hmmm. comdlg is part of ie, not sure why that issue would actually come up. Saying that there has been nothing from x sight for ages. I am part of the test team and I have not heard anything for an age. Saying that there has been no mail to any of the lists the discussion list or the test list. Saying that, my isp seems to have got tied up with the antispam thing, private server lists are things I can't get access to. usagames is one domain, there are others on tbrn and so on, and thats about it maybe x sight not sure. As long as it is on yahoo, freelists, etc then its ok. At 05:42 a.m. 4/01/2009, you wrote: Hi, seems that X-sight does not really care about the end user's VB libraries during the installation process. Re: [Audyssey] Scifi exploration online game?
Hi Dark, Well, interesting enough there was a gaming article I read the other day, written by a sighted gamer, which said just about the same things you have been saying. Like many of us on the list he started out playing classic computer text adventures, gaming consoles, and did some paper and pen roll playing gaming with his friends back in the 1980's and early 1990's. To make a long story short now he is older, has a family of his own, and decided to purchase an XBox 360 for his family. Well, one reason he did so is because of the high ratings on the superior graphics technology of the XBox 360, the great sound effects, and of course there were several games with great reviews in various gaming magazines. In the article he goes on to pick a few titles that were on the 2008 best seller list and two of them were supposed to be really awesome RPG adventures. As you read on you clearly can tell the author of the article is far from impressed by these totally cool games that the gaming mags are raving about. He raises a lot of good points you and i both can agree whole heartedly with. His biggest complaint with both RPG games he reviews in the article is the lack of plot. Neither game had much of a plot, and mostly he was wandering around the game world just killing monsters for experience points and bonus items. Even when there was a plot/story for the adventure he was on all of the quests were quite similar with the same enemies just dressed up different or located in different places. Not at all really creative. Another point he really hammered home was both games allowed you to pick your alignment at the beginning of the game. He thought, as I do, that if you pick a good alignment the games story line and adventures would be different than if you picked an evil alignment. No such luck. He picked an evil alignment and the game played exactly the same as if he was good. Which really means that it didn't matter what alignment you were as the game always turned out the same anyway. To ice the cake, so to speak, when he completed the games he expected some titanic battle between the hero and the boss. Again no dice. If you completed all of the available adventures you were more than a match for the boss. he basically beat the boss in no time, and the game was a huge let down. He basically said the disappointing boss battles alone were a waist of cash for the game let alone everything else that was wrong with the games. The point he wanted to make was simply this. Back in the day when text was the only means for transfering information to a gamer game developers worked hard to come up with a creative story line and a setting to interest the gamer. The more technology has advanced the less interested game companies are in creating good story lines, developing the game's plot, less character development, etc. They all seam focused on getting the best graphics, the best sounds, a lot of internet based pvp play, and to heck with anything else close to an interesting story or characters. It is as though big game corperations are hell bent on pushing the limits of gaming technology while forgetting the most important element of gaming which is the creative writing that holds the game together. Without the creative writing people like you and I become disgusted and board pretty quickly with the lack of creativity in this or that new game. As far as your point about making an original Sci-Fi RPG game I find myself agreeing. It is easier to use an off the shelf sci-fi universe like Star Wars, but then it's story will be largely driven by the books, movies, and radio dramas I have read/heard/seen. It is not at all original, and for long time Star wars fans there isn't anything extremely new there. That is hardly better than writing a copy of Sryth with renamed characters and places. In the end what we really need is something new, something original, something a bit different from the mainstream. I'm not sure exactly what that might bbe at this point, but it is better than sitting around When it comes to science fiction there is a lot of possabilities a game developer such as myself could follow. We have the big SStar Trek thing with a giant galaxy to explore, or something more simple like a time traveling game. I don't know about you, but a game were you can visit the future, passed, present, etc might be an interesting idea. then, of course, there is all of the end of the world type stories. After World War II billions died as the result of a nuclear war. Some humans are mutated, monsters, and a few of the real humans are left fighting for there life. In the Terminator version the Terminators turned to the idea of whiping out there human creators. Some interesting stories right there. We haven't even talked much about the science fiction/horror type stories that could be interesting stories. The World War Z concept of the world getting infected by a

Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista
Hi, Yes, Jim Kitchen's games will work with Vista, but there are some things you need to do in order to make them work properly under Windows Vista. If you have User Account Control enabled and want the added security of User Account Control then is is what you should do. 1. arrow to the setup for the game you want to install, press the Windows context key, and arrow to run as administrator. This will launch the setup with admin rights that User Account Control requires for some setup/installers. 2. Instead of installing to the default location like c:\Program Files\Kitchensinc. you need to install it to a local directory that you have full rights to. Usually it is something like c:\Users\User Name\Games\Kitchinsinc. For example, my user name on my computer is Thomas. So under Windows Vista I install all of Jim's games to c:\Users\Thomas\Games\Kitchensinc. What I generally do is copy the Kitchensinc folder from c:\program files to my local directory before installing any of the games. Now, if thissounds too difficult for you to do, too confusing, the only other suggestion is to turn User Account Control off completely. It is this new security feature of Windows vista that accounts for most of the problems with games under Vista. Especially, those written prier to Vista's release. Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista
Hi Lelia, Smile. Read my previous post on this subject. As I said it is possible to get all of Jim's games to run under Vista, but there is a few tricks to doing it properly. I myself initially thought it was impossible until I figured out that User Account Control management doesn't care if you play games out of your home directory, but it cares a great deal if they are installed to your programs directory and they were not written to work specifically on Vista. Since Windows Vista uses security measures similar to Mac OS and Linux I was pretty familiar with the concept of user specific rights, but for most Windows users the concept of user rights and user specific permissions is basically a new concept. lelia wrote: I hate to disagree, but no they don't!!! My husband has vista and he absolutely LOVES! Jim's games and he can't play and boy does he throw a fit each time he thinks of it so he plays the games on my computer which is xp. now before I get yelled at let me say that if there is a way we can make the games run under vista let me know, but be very detailed. lelia --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista
Hi Lelia, That particular error is caused do to running the setup with the wrong access permissions under Vista. Tell your husband he needs to run the setup as administrator by using the run as administrator command from the context menu when right clicking on the file or by using the Windows context key on the keyboard. Now, can i offer a bit of advice? Windows Vista can be quite a bit different from XP. There are several new concepts introduced under Vista including improved security management. One of the problems under XP was that it had various security features, but users would not turn them on or didn't know how to configure them properly. That lead to mass spread virus attacks and hackers breaking into XP etc. Under Vista Microsoft changed security policies by making it fairly secure out of the box. They have taken after Mac and Linux by forcing users to run as standard users unless specifically instructed to envoke an admin right on a file or program. They also have improved user specific rights to files and programs so that anything in your own ddirectories is safe to run, open, use, and can be blocked from other user's access. Except from the system administrator of course. If you are going to be a Windows Vista user everyone should read up on it, and find out how to deal with the new security systems properly. Yes, you can turn them off, but in my opinion that totally defeats the point of upgrading from XP to Vista since security is one of Vista's high points. Also I have been testing the new Windows 7 OS here, and I'm going to tell everyone coming out the gate things aren't changing. User Account Control is still here, and here to stay. Though, only major difference between the Windows 7 UAC management and the Vista one is that Windows 7 does allow you to go into the advanced settings for your system and customize how UAC protects your computer. lelia wrote: Nope it didn't work, when he tried to install the baseball game it said self-extract can't create output file in the kitchensinc folder. or something to that effect. lelia - Original Message - From: lelia struv...@yahoo.com To: Gamers Discussion list gamers@audyssey.org Sent: Saturday, January 03, 2009 4:18 PM Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista We'll try that again, he says he thought he did but he's going to try that now, thanks. Hi Lelia, Yes, User Account Control can easily be disabled. Though, it is not recommended or safe security practice to do so. Just go into the Windows control panel and from the users panel uncheck the checkbox for use User Account Control, and reboot. Then, watch Windows Security Center pitch a fit. Re: [Audyssey] Jim Kitchens Games under Vista
Hi Lelia, Yes, I do see the problem. Grin. As a matter of fact I myself have decided to down grade one of my computers just because Vista is such a pain with accessible games and other older programs. Not to say the least about a massive resource hog. I just hand built a 3 GHZ system with 1GHZ ram, 250 GB hard drive, etc and I decided after putting it together to take Microsoft up on there extended Windows XP support. Said support was extended exactly because while Vista brings much to the table in security etc it was a major flop in other areas. XP SP3 is still the recommended Windows OS by most IT professionals in the field right now. lelia wrote: Hi Thomas, well, the unfortunate thing is that my poor husband didn't choose vista his family thinking they were doing him a favor got him vista against other blind techies advise so thanks we needed to hear that. *sigh. lelia --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Gaming Galaxy Update!
My my my, its been awhile! Ok folks, here's the latest web site updates to the galaxy, which I hope you all enjoy. 1. BSC Games has returnned to the galaxy! 2. Draconis Entertainment has returnned to the galaxy! 3. Links to all of the Fantastic Games lists have been added to the Gaming Galaxy Planets! section. 4. The new site for USA Games Interactive has been added to the USA Games page. Need clearification if links to games that are mirrored by USA should have their own separate pages or should be included on the USA Games page. For example, games from Danzi Games. 5. The Galaxy News will be updated with the latest web site changes, and so will the Gaming Galaxy Discussion Room. 6. Still waiting to see if the Klango team will create an Audio Games.net forum for Klango users, or that creations of user forums will be implimented in the next update. Hope you like the updates, and feedback is always welcomed! I have noticed one balancing issue. If you make it past your first two fights, you are generally going to be ok, but the first couple of fights are always evil. Re: [Audyssey] Entombed
Yes, the first fights are rough because you start with no equipment. That'll change in the next build. Losing limbs should probably be more traumatic than it is, and there needs to be a way to reattach them without a healer. I'll try to address that too. The next version will have a lot more to content with in battles. Jason On Sun, Jan 4, 2009 at 12:47 PM, Dakotah Rickard dakotah.rick...@gmail.comwrote: I have noticed one balancing issue. If you make it past your first two fights, you are generally going to be ok, but the first couple of fights are always evil. Also, could you make a potion to reattach broken limbs? The healers are fine, but a fighter with no arms is kind of useless.
