Thank you! I agree on all points. Tekken was always a big one for me. And I,
having played all mortal kombats, can confidently say that I do like Mortal
Kombat less and less with each itteration. Like I always said... tekken
didn't have the best in terms of sounds, but it's gotten better and some of
those sounds make me cringe... particularly the bonebreaks.

Character designs are great... and yes, I agree about Paul being a street
punk!

Glad to see some discussion going here... even if only one other person is

I'd take tekken over Mk any day, mostly cause as far as storyline goes,
tekken is better thoughtout and has a more interesting plot.
Every character has their unique lifestyle and motives, and each one is
well written and has clear purpose.
MK on the other hand, well, a bunch of ninjas who are really not
ninjas and a force from outworld that tries to take over Earth by
winning/cheating the tourni...and from there it just gets lamer and lamer
by each new plot...

Also Tekken has more likeable designs...android/cyborgs, martial artists
of all types, street punks (I'm sorry, but no matter what they say, Paul
Phoenix is still a street punk rofl), and heck, dinosaur? lol

As far as gameplay go, I never did get into the MK much, so can't make a
fair comparison, but I can honestly say that for me, there is probably not
many fighting games that can rival Tekken's style of play.
Even though I prefer Soul Calibur over Tekken, that's just cause of my
love of swords and what-you-have-it, and nothing really because of
gameplay.

And even then, if we go by a point system, I'd still rank Tekken over SC.

Also, the tekken fighters are much more realistic than the MK ones-
another point to Tekken in my book.

That said, I think MK probably has more playability value to some people
just because it got several bonus things like animality and fatality
moves- not to mention several versions of each.

So I saw a joke topic on gamefaqs about this... joke meaning it was
someone trashing things about teken that were completely untrue. So
here's some serious discussion. Which do you think is better and why?
Here are my reasons laid out on the table. Quite simple, really.

Although Mortal Kombat is fun, it's the type of fun that lasts for a
couple hours. The gameplay engine isn't that deep when you think about
it. Sure characters have combos and special moves, but there's not too
much to learn. You learn how to do combos and special moves and how to
block. That's all you need to do to play MK. Tekken? It seems to me to be
a whole different story. You have to learn combos as well, yes. But you
also need to learn the moves you can do while you're crouching, while
your character is standing up, positions, etc.

Other reasons... tekken has better presentation. The voice acting in
tekken has always been great, and the one thing I take over mortal
kombat? Characters in tekken say things that make sense. In japanese,
chinese, korean or english, but they all make sense. MK fighters seem to
yell nonsense words. Sonya's bicycle kick in MK vs dc universe for
example. Take a listen... tekken doesn't have the best sounds for
punching and kicking, but the cutseens are backed by great acting and
great emotion. The music is also great, with a whole lot of diversity and
different styles.

There are my reasons. People's opnnions? What does everyone like?

Re: [Audyssey] tekken versus Mortal Kombat

2009-10-04 Thread ChB
I have played both too and I agree with the observatiopns
made.
Also mortal kombat, when it first came out was always about
the visuals, blood and gore factor more so than tekken.
While a good game nevertheless, I think MK sold very good
because it was fun, but even more so because it had those
gory fatality moves with lots of blood and stuff, which at
the time was not seen too often in videogames.I remember
when the first installment of MK came out, I had still
vision, and I was amazed about the deadly combat with ripped
off heads and stuff you could do.
Overall I think tekken is more about studying the opponent
and his or her weak spots and then try to beat them with
lots of training. MK to me, was always more button mashing
than really trying to get the right combos at the right
time.

Nope I stopped active playing about 8 years ago mainly due to a lack of time
and eventually...I guess I sort of outgrew it.
I'm sure I can get back into gaming, but the thought of several hundred
bucks on a system, then get games, then the hours I be sitting in front of
the TV...a bit scary really rofl after so many years without it.
Well okay okay, the sitting in front of the TV part doesn't scare me as much
as the expense, but you get my drift lol.
The thing is, I have a long list of things I need to spend money
on...electric guitar needs fixing, need to get me a free-standing punching
bag, got to go on trips, etc etc, and that system suddenly ends up on the
bottom corner of the long list of things.

Hi Bryan,
Thanks for saying that. At last someone actually understands how I feel
about this particular project. Smile.
Yes, I do want and need a break from this game. As soon as it is done I
plan to take a break from game programming. I would like time to just
sit back watch TV, read a book without thinking about what needs to be
done next in game x, play with my son, and just take some time off. I
like programming, but working on the same game day in and day out gets
to be boring, frustrating, and down right irritating after a while.
Actually, my unhappiness over this particular project, which should have
been completed ages ago, just further constipates the process. I've
reached the point of burn out, don't want to even work on it any more,
but have gone too far just to quit.

Bryan Peterson wrote:
The question at this stage of the game probably isn't so much whether
or not something is possible, but rather whether or not the amount of
recoding necessary to implement would be worth Thomas putting in that
extra effort. Let's not forget here that he's had this project on hand
for more than three years and let's face it, didn't realize what a mess
it was going to turn out to be when he took it on. Personally I think
we should just let the poor guy finish the project as quickly as he
reasonably can and worry about any possible updates later. I wouldn't
be at all surprised if once MOTA and Raceway were released he wanted a
bit of a break to recharge his batteries. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised
if he wanted one just after Mota. And if he did we'd need to respect
that. It's as I said in another message. I honestly don't know if I'd
have been able to do what he's done. I'd most certainly have snapped
far sooner than this.

[Audyssey] liam's judgement day---some suggestions

2009-10-04 Thread Johnny Tai
Been enjoying this game for the last few days...the demo anyway. I love it.
Alot of replay values and nice sounds.
I wonder, if it's possible to change the machinegun sound to a heavier
machinegun- you know how they say, 'the heavy machinegun roars...' well,
this doesn't exactly roar, it's more like a medium machinegun heh.

Also, for those of us with hearing issues, is it possible to add in an
aiming aid like SOD? At the hardest level it gets very frustrating, and also
the game starts to get a bit old when one/I, have to mostly rely on sweeping
the gun from one end to the other rofl.
The helicopter and the ships at least can be chanced, but those darn rockets
moves about and when you can't aim right in the first place...well you get
the picture.
Also might be neat if you get a special sound when your at the end of a
turn, like a click or something when you reach the far right or left.
For aiming aid, I suggest using the shift key already built in...just have
it beep differently when the gun is pointing at something.

So far the highest I've reached is 9000 or so points on the hardest level
which is around the seventh wave...but I have to admit, that's alot of fluke
on my side.

That's it for now.

P.S:
I love the theatre thing, especially 'Living with Liam!' rofl

Ah. Well... I can relate to some of those. My electric still needs to be
fixed, too. Not to mention the trip I took I trip to Kelowna for the junior
goalball tournament in April took a heavy chunk out of the savings I have.
lol.

As for Mortal Kombat and the gore factor. That was what I said on the
gamefaqs topic as well... MK I always felt was more like a real martial arts
simulation, because you had to learn to block right, sidestep, dodge and
counter with the right moves. But what tops it for me is still the
presentation.

Nope I stopped active playing about 8 years ago mainly due to a lack of
time and eventually...I guess I sort of outgrew it.
I'm sure I can get back into gaming, but the thought of several hundred
bucks on a system, then get games, then the hours I be sitting in front of
the TV...a bit scary really rofl after so many years without it.
Well okay okay, the sitting in front of the TV part doesn't scare me as
much as the expense, but you get my drift lol.
The thing is, I have a long list of things I need to spend money
on...electric guitar needs fixing, need to get me a free-standing punching
bag, got to go on trips, etc etc, and that system suddenly ends up on the
bottom corner of the long list of things.

Mortal

Kombat less and less with each itteration. Like I always said... tekken
didn't have the best in terms of sounds, but it's gotten better and some
of

those sounds make me cringe... particularly the bonebreaks.

Character designs are great... and yes, I agree about Paul being a street

I'd take tekken over Mk any day, mostly cause as far as storyline goes,
tekken is better thoughtout and has a more interesting plot.
Every character has their unique lifestyle and motives, and each one is
well written and has clear purpose.
MK on the other hand, well, a bunch of ninjas who are really not
ninjas and a force from outworld that tries to take over Earth by
winning/cheating the tourni...and from there it just gets lamer and
lamer

by each new plot...

Also Tekken has more likeable designs...android/cyborgs, martial artists
of all types, street punks (I'm sorry, but no matter what they say, Paul
Phoenix is still a street punk rofl), and heck, dinosaur? lol

As far as gameplay go, I never did get into the MK much, so can't make a
fair comparison, but I can honestly say that for me, there is probably
not

many fighting games that can rival Tekken's style of play.
Even though I prefer Soul Calibur over Tekken, that's just cause of my
love of swords and what-you-have-it, and nothing really because of
gameplay.
And even then, if we go by a point system, I'd still rank Tekken over
SC.

Also, the tekken fighters are much more realistic than the MK ones-
another point to Tekken in my book.

That said, I think MK probably has more playability value to some people
just because it got several bonus things like animality and fatality
moves- not to mention several versions of each.

No one ever kicked ass by saying I can't.

[Audyssey] Last Week version 1.2 released

2009-10-04 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello everyone. I'm just letting you know that Last Week Before The
Wedding version 1.2 has now been released. I've just uploaded
LastWeek-1.2.zip to the files section of the aifarchive2 section of
yahoogroups. In addition, I've also uploaded it to the Adrift 4.0
section of the AIFCommunity.org site. If there are other places where
this game can go for download, feel free to upload it there as long as
it's allowed.

Even though a changes list is included inside the game zip archive, I'll
post some of the bigger ones here.

* Fixed some problems with not all the magazine stories always being
made available when they should have been.

* Fixed some inconsistencies with NPC conversations where the answers to
things were not always right depending on what actions you've done or
not done.

* Enhanced some of the cheat commands. -- Mainly the cheat which allows
you to obtain any object even if you haven't seen it.

* Lastly, probably the biggest change. The grocery store is gone. It was
not fair that some of the things you needed to find were things normally
found in grocery stores, yet you still told one of the NPCs to go to the
grocery store to get those things you couldn't get yourself. I'm talking
about toiletry items such as soap, shampoo, and shaving stuff here. So
the grocery store, has been morphed into a jewelry store which is
located in the mall where jewelry stores can usually be found. All
puzzles and game play related to Amanda and the grocery store has been
updated accordingly to use the jewelry store instead. The map space
formally occupied by the grocery store is now inhabited by a park.

* Because of the grocery store morphing into a jewelry store, the mall
has been remodeled a bit. There are now 4 inner quadrants in the mall
with the stores surrounding them. This area is the only area which
allows diagonal movement in the game. The mall directory has been
updated to show you an ASCII type of map of what stores are where.

If you were in the middle of a saved game of version 1.0, it will not
work for 1.2 because of the changes I'm afraid. So you would have to
start all over. However even though the game has this many changes, the
over-all game play style is the same. The changes were mainly done due
to the feedback on this list as well as private email, and of course, my
beta testers.

Now that this fixed/enhanced version is out, I'm hoping to move onto
other game projects.

Thanks to all for your support, and as always, enjoy the game.

Just because I'm hoping to be done with updates, it does not mean I
won't answer any game questions in case you are stuck, or in case you
find a bug which I forgot to fix.

Rofl! So do I, though I certainly hope that kind of thing never happens,
lol. I have a question about the trophy stystem in this game. I managed to
unlock nine trophies...but I'm stuck after that. I have nothing to work

know there was supposed to be a Super Liam 2...is this still supposed to
happen?

Subject: [Audyssey] liam's judgement day---some suggestions

Re: [Audyssey] Why can't we get a challenging game for once? wasMOTA

2009-10-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,
It's not exactly like that. It is more to do with the fact that every
program is a challenge to create, unique difficulties to over come, and
requires careful planning and design. Games more so, because the fact
they heavily depend on a number of specialized fields to create.
A full fledged commercial video game requires skill in graphics design,
artificial intelligence, audio design, music composition, applied
physics, story writing, etc. In other words there are plenty of
programming and non-programming related fields drawn into one single
game. There is a huge satisfaction in seeing all those elements being
drawn together, crafted, molded into a single work of art. That's really
what it is. Game programming is basically high tech art.
Most of all the challenge is what adicts me. Every time I write a
program I find, rather discover, new ways of doing things. There are
several ways to write a section of code. However, some is faster,
cleaner, better designed, etc. Sometimes I might write a piece of code
one way for years and suddenly the light comes on and I see a quicker,
leaner, and meaner way to do the same code in half the steps involved.
It just clicks, and suddenly I know a way to make a better mouse trap as
they say.

Re: [Audyssey] tekken versus Mortal Kombat

2009-10-04 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi,
Couldn't agree more. I still had some sight when MK first hit the
streets and I've always felt that MK was lacking in story line,
character development, etc. It appeared to me then as it does now that
the story and characters were tossed in as an after thought to support
the extreme violence and gory graphics. In other words once you looked
passed the fatalities, gory graphics, the games as a whole is rather
shallow.

ChB wrote:

Also mortal kombat, when it first came out was always about
the visuals, blood and gore factor more so than tekken.
While a good game nevertheless, I think MK sold very good
because it was fun, but even more so because it had those
gory fatality moves with lots of blood and stuff, which at
the time was not seen too often in videogames.I remember
when the first installment of MK came out, I had still
vision, and I was amazed about the deadly combat with ripped
off heads and stuff you could do.
Overall I think tekken is more about studying the opponent
and his or her weak spots and then try to beat them with
lots of training. MK to me, was always more button mashing
than really trying to get the right combos at the right
time.

2009-10-04 Thread Clement Chou
Still is the case. Granted they've thrown in cutseens and whatnot, but when
it boils down to it, the story still feels like an afterthought. And worse?
The MK storylines always follow the same pattern. Tekken has a lot of
branches, and that's what I've always liked about it.
