 Hi Dark,
It is certainly true that an especially good game never completely dies
out, but it is also true that interests do change. When I was a kid the
arcade games like Packman, Centapede, Asteroids, etc were the rave.
Every kid I knew had Packman, Missile Command, Asteroids, and some of
the other classic Atari games. While those games have never died out ---
there are still remakes being made today --- they are never-the-less not
as popular as they once were. Today It seams video game developers have
turned to large FPs style games such as Resident Evil, Tomb Raider, Gear
Wars, Halo, or something like that. There are also several large
multiplayer roll playing games like DC Universe, World of Warcraft, Star
Wars Galaxy of Heroes, etc that have taken the gaming world by storm.
Not saying these are bad, but the trend certainly is no longer Packman,
Galaxian, or Space Invaders any more.

2009-11-09 Thread Raul A. Gallegos
Hello all, I, me, Raul, the co-moderator is also asking the piracy
thread to be stopped.

So This is the second request I've made. Since you feel that you can't

Thomas' actions will be dealt with and we all just need to move on.

Many thanks.

be upholding the guidelines of this list.

I'm sorry, whilst I have nothing against Thomas personally I think he's an
ok kind of guy, but how can someone in his position, come down in the future
on someone for rearing the ugly head of piracy when he's directly done it
himself? In the biggest way possible! Nobody now is really going to take him
seriously unfortunately and the problem here is that nobody is going to
forget this either. The moment piracy rears it's ugly head again and yes it
will, if Thomas comes down on it again, it will open this whole can of worms
again and again and again.

If he'd made the mistake just as a list member and not a moderator, then yes
it could be let go because a list member has no power to moderate therefore
cannot enforce list polacy. But a person in the kind of position of
responsibility who is upholding list polacy cannot afford to make mistakes
like that and just get away with it for 1 very simple reason. If you are
upholding a set of laws or guidelines, you have to be seen to be following
them yourself. The moment that is shown to not be the case, then you've got
prolems.

what if, let's say instead of copying and distributing that cassette, you
tell the person to turn on the radio at the exact same time you do and

Re: [Audyssey] Future of accessible games

2009-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Charles,
That's one way of looking at it. Back in 1980 when Space Invaders came
out the internet didn't exist, 3d graphics technology hadn't been
invented yet, and the Atari only had 2600 K memory. A game like DC
Universe Online simply would not have been possible on a system like that.
Now, we have the Play Station 3. Sony Entertainment has licensed the DC
Comic's characters from DC Comics and plans to release a masssive
multiplayer game called DC Universe Online soon. Do to the Play
Station's network based game play it is possible to basically join the
Justice League or the League of Doom and battle it out in places like
Matropolis, Gothom City, and so on. Such a massive roll playing game was
not possible 29 years ago, but it is possible now. Game developers have
taken advantage of the technological improvements, and therefore the
game industry has definitely evolved from its origins.

Re: [Audyssey] Visually impaired gamer sues Sony Online.

2009-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chrissy,
Well, I don't know that adding accessibility would necessarily double
game pricing, but it would cost the game companies something to add all
the same. Certainly it wouldn't come free, of course, and it would take
some extra time and effort to add. Never-the-less it isn't as expensive
as you might think.
The main thing to keep in mind here is that most of the major game
companies use a game engine to save time and energy on game development.
They can create several games using basically the same code since all of
the primary features of the game is already built into the engine
itself. If they would add accessibility to some of their game engines,
or had done so from the beginning it wouldn't cost them much to create
several accessible games using the same technology. This is one of the
things the Agrip project tried to prove with their Audio Quake project.
When the Agrip project started out they took an off the shelf game
engine, Quake, modified it, added some accessibility, and wanted to use
that as a spring board to show game companies, new game developers, etc
ways in which a fully modern game engine and game could be made
accessible. I know several games such as Elite Force I and Elite Force
II that use the Unreal engine as the code base. If that engine could be
upgraded with accessibility then every game developer who uses that
engine could easily include accessibility to every title.
Likewise in 2007 Core Design released a new game engine called the
Legend Engine. It has been used to create a number of games including
Tomb Raider Legend, Tomb Raider Underworld, and Tomb Raider Anniversary.
Now, if they had spent the time and money developing accessibility into
the Legend Engine in the first place every game they created afterwards
would include the same degree of accessibility features, and the cost of
adding accessibility would be paid for many times over after several
successful titles. However, that only works if they add accessibility
from the outset.
The problem, of course, is all of these companies have not done that. If
this person were to win in court it could open up a landslide of
eexpensive court cases against game companies suing for this or that
game to be made accessible. That could be very costly because instead of
adding accessibility once during the development of their game engine
they now have to upgrade each and every game that can be made accessible
which is a feature these companies see no financial reason to do. Adding
access to new games is easy enough, but going back and upgrading
hundreds of previously released titles is asking too much. The simple
fact is once a game company releases a game title it sells x number of
copies, and then public interest in the game fades. No one in the
sighted world is going to rush out and buyan upgrade for said game if
the only new feature is increased accessibility, and of course companies
like Sony know this all too well.

ChB wrote:

While I, like everyone else, would love the idea of having every single game
accessible in the future, it will not happen.
Think about how costly this would be, development would raise the price of a
game to probably double what it is now.
And to an extent I could understand that the sighted gamers will hit the
roof when they are forced to pay outrageous prices for content they would
never need or use.
Again, I would love to see this happen, nut chances are very very slim that
this is happening. We are too few in numbers really to be a target customer
for those games. The only thing I can see happening is maybe them adding
reading out loud in all menus and stuff so that it is easier to navigate.
This should be easy to do and would not really cost more, I assume.
They already have subtitles for hearing impaired gamers but the adjustments
for that group are so much easier anyway, because you do not have to change
the game itself at all.

Hi Dark,
That's not the first time I've heard that before. I recently read an
article somewhere saying pretty much the same thing. It was a reviewer
for some major gaming magazine, and he pretty much said games created
today are not anywhere as good as they use to be years ago.
He also sited the point of over commercialization, too much emphasis on
killer graphics, special effects, great music and sounds, but no story
content and replay value whatever. The basic point of his article was
you really are not getting much of a game for your money any more, and
most games you can rent it once, play it, and return it without wishing
to play that game again. In his opinion most game companies don't really
care if the game is good or not as long as they can put something out
there, sell it quickly, and put something else out equally quickly.

Re: [Audyssey] windows 7 and games

2009-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Brandon,
You should not be trying to install .NET Framework 3.5 on Windows 7.
Windows 7 comes with .NET Framework 4.0 which includes backwards
compatible libraries for earlier versions of the .NET Framework. So
there is no need to upgrade .NET since the latest version is already
installed. I can't say for certain why you are getting that error
message, but I suspect you may have unintentionally messed something up
by forcing older components on to the system. What all did you install?

And let's face it folks, not everybody's willing to accept the possibility
of more future games being accessible. They'll want all the old titles made
accessible as well, not just the new ones. That'll put a damper on the
accessibility movement right there. Mainstream devs might, with the proper
effort, be persuaded to build accessibility into some if not all their
future titles but no way can we expect them to go back and make all their
old titles accessible. The only way that might happen is if the games were
released as part of an anniversary collection and probably not even then.

If they would add accessibility to some of their game engines, or had done
so from the beginning it wouldn't cost them much to create several
accessible games using the same technology. This is one of the things the
Agrip project tried to prove with their Audio Quake project.
When the Agrip project started out they took an off the shelf game engine,
Quake, modified it, added some accessibility, and wanted to use that as a
spring board to show game companies, new game developers, etc ways in
which a fully modern game engine and game could be made accessible. I know
several games such as Elite Force I and Elite Force II that use the Unreal
engine as the code base. If that engine could be upgraded with
accessibility then every game developer who uses that engine could easily
include accessibility to every title.
Likewise in 2007 Core Design released a new game engine called the Legend
Engine. It has been used to create a number of games including Tomb Raider
Legend, Tomb Raider Underworld, and Tomb Raider Anniversary. Now, if they
had spent the time and money developing accessibility into the Legend
Engine in the first place every game they created afterwards would include
the same degree of accessibility features, and the cost of adding
accessibility would be paid for many times over after several successful
titles. However, that only works if they add accessibility from the
outset.
The problem, of course, is all of these companies have not done that. If
this person were to win in court it could open up a landslide of
eexpensive court cases against game companies suing for this or that game
to be made accessible. That could be very costly because instead of adding
accessibility once during the development of their game engine they now
have to upgrade each and every game that can be made accessible which is a
feature these companies see no financial reason to do. Adding access to
new games is easy enough, but going back and upgrading hundreds of
previously released titles is asking too much. The simple fact is once a
game company releases a game title it sells x number of copies, and then
public interest in the game fades. No one in the sighted world is going to
rush out and buyan upgrade for said game if the only new feature is
increased accessibility, and of course companies like Sony know this all
too well.

ChB wrote:
While I, like everyone else, would love the idea of having every single
game

accessible in the future, it will not happen.
Think about how costly this would be, development would raise the price
of a

game to probably double what it is now.
And to an extent I could understand that the sighted gamers will hit the
roof when they are forced to pay outrageous prices for content they would
never need or use.
Again, I would love to see this happen, nut chances are very very slim
that
this is happening. We are too few in numbers really to be a target
customer

for those games. The only thing I can see happening is maybe them adding
reading out loud in all menus and stuff so that it is easier to navigate.
This should be easy to do and would not really cost more, I assume.
They already have subtitles for hearing impaired gamers but the
adjustments
for that group are so much easier anyway, because you do not have to
change

the game itself at all.

[Audyssey] Harry Potter Spells game

2009-11-09 Thread Phil Vlasak

Hi Folks,
Here is the announcement of a new game for the iPhone.
As the new iPhone is more accessible I wonder if this game is too.

Harry Potter Spells is a game app that transforms your iPhone or iPod touch
into a magic wand. Once you have received your wand at Ollivanders you are
Sorted into one of the four houses at Hogwarts. From there you will be
taught how to cast spells. Once you feel that you are ready to duel,
challenge others to earn points for your specific house.
You start by learning how to cast all of your spells. Each spell is
represented by a specific gesture with your iPhone or iPod touch. There are
fourteen spells in the game, which is quite a lot to remember. One of the
main features of the app is the ability to duel other people. You can play
it single player as well against Artificial opponents.

The game will be available November 16th, 2009!
It will be available for purchase on the iTunes App Store.
Harry Potter: Spells will work on any iPhone or iPod touch with operating
system version 3.1 and above.
The game was in concept and development for over a year. We wanted to give
the player the ability to cast all of your favorite spells from the Harry
Potter books and films.

How can I learn to cast a spell?
Simply select Learn from the main menu, and you will be guided through the
list of spell lessons for learning the exact hand gestures you will need to
cast a spell. If you are having trouble you can visit the tutorial section
which will give you tips on how to hold the device.
Players have the best success if they perform the motion slowly and
accurately. Placing your thumb on the screen is important as it tells the
device when to start recording your hand motion. Once that hand-motion has
been performed, finish the spell by taking your thumb off the screen.

How do I challenge my friends to a duel?
Both players need to be in the same room and both must have purchased the
game. You can only play Multi-Player via Bluetooth or on the same Wi-Fi
hotspot. It is not possible to duel through the internet. We recommend
players stand within 15 feet of each other.

1. Both players must select Duel from the main menu
2. Both players must then select Multi-Player
3. Both players must choose the same option - Nearby(Bluetooth) or
Online(WiFi)

4. Follow onscreen instructions.

What are the hand gestures for each of the Spells?
Visit the Practice section from the main menu and you will see a Spell
Chart in the background. Note: You can also turn this Spell Chart on while
dueling by selecting Spell Chart from the pause menu.

You can record your voice! Select Learn from the main menu. Once you have
selected a spell, press the Record Voice and follow the onscreen
instructions. You can replace all the pre-recorded spell casting voices in
the game with your own voice.

Harry Potter: Spells was developed by Mikoishi. It was produced by Nathan
Feldman at Warner Bros.

Windows 7 comes with .NET Framework 4.0 which includes backwards

there is no need to upgrade .NET since the latest version is already
installed. I can't say for certain why you are getting that error

up by forcing older components on to the system. What all did you

[Audyssey] a question for Raul about his walk-through of Shades of Doom

2009-11-09 Thread Kim Etheridge
I'm sorry to have to post this on list, even if it's found to be on topic. I've
tried contacting this person privately, but either he never got my email, and
it's still floating out in cyberspace, or maybe he got it, but was too busy to
answer. You know how busy people can get.

Hi, Raul. Although I don't post much of anything, I'm on the Audicy gaming
list. Not too long ago, I registered my copy of Shades of Doom 1.2. When you
were doing your walk-through for this game, did you use cheat codes, or was it
a matter of maze memorization? I'm asking, because levels two and above are way
too challenging. If I'm not killed by the blob on level two, or a gun toting
mutant human, then, I get stuck in a passage on level three, and have to blast
through a wall with a timed mine, which I sometimes don't have, in order to get
a blasted data wafer. I've already tried the get stuck in a wall trick and
enter 4796153, but it never works. When I was playing in demo mode, I could
always do that, but now that I've registered it, that code doesn't work. Odds
are, I'll probably never get the 2 points I'll need for my cheat codes. I
purchased the cheat codes along with the game. You'd think I'd already have
them. I've looked everywhere for the sodcheats.txt file, but I can't find it.
I've also looked at the cheats section of
www.audiogames.net
but their information is way out of date. I've looked at lots of documented
reviews people have written about this game, but that hasn't helped either.
They never give any relevant information. They only cover things I already know
about movement and monsters. They never discuss the way things are laid out in
the maze for each level. Lately, it's a guessing game for me. I've turned on
the audio navigator, but sometimes it doesn't help. If you didn't use cheat
codes while doing your walk-through, could you please give me some tips fo
levels two and above. Level one's a snap, and I've already mastered it. I've
gotten good at grenade tossing, although it's hard on level two, when I find a
mutant human shooting a gun and there's a wall separating us. If I throw a
grenade there, I'm as good as dead. So, any tips you have for me would be
great. I'd have posted this to the list, but with all the Moto talk lately, I
have a feeling this topic wouldn't have been accepted, even though it is on
topid. You know how some people are. Just to be safe, though, I thought I'd
contact you privately and off list. Thanks in advance. I really hope this
doesn't bounce back.

Re: [Audyssey] a question for Raul about his walk-through of Shades ofDoom

2009-11-09 Thread dark
I can't think why a topic about Shades would not be accepted on this list at
all, - even if we have been talking about mota recently, there's no rule
which says we can't discuss old games.

To answer your questions, No, Raul doesn't you cheats in his walkthrough of
the game, - he just practices considderably.

The bit with the blob and the toilet, you eseentially need to flush and run
as quickly as possible, sinse blobs do lots of damage but are extremely
slow.

It's a while sinse I've played so i can't specifically recall which mutant
human you mean, but often side stepping out of a gap while in one
direction is a good way to take creatures out quickly, - especially if
you have an automatic weapon.

As to cheats, i also perchiced the cheats for the game when I bought it back
in 2005, but after the 1.2 upgrade they never materialized, - nor have I
managed to get the 2 points required either.

The cheats on audiogames.net were unfortunately for version 1.0, not
1.2, - really they should be taken down sinse they're not accurate.

Hth.

Beware the Grue!

[Audyssey] need help with a sound issue

2009-11-09 Thread Sylvester Thomas
Greetings All! I am having a very annoying sound issue. I am running a system
with X P with a sound blaster audigy sound card and the speakers are set to 5
point 1. Note I have tried to change the sound mode to stereo headphones with
the same results. My problem is with Draconis Entertainments The Ultimate
Soundoku. Note, I have all the other titles by them such as Monkey Business,
Dyno Man Sarah Ten pin alley an Alien outback and do not have this problem.
The problem is with panning, I run the check speakers option on all those
titles, and every other game on my system and the only other games with panning
issues is Grizzly Gulch, and Jim Kitchens Mach 1 game. What is strange is that
the opening title sounds and the menu sounds are fine but when I start the game
I am only getting the left channel. With Grizzly gulch I get stereo for every
sound in the game except when trying to shoot the gun the clicking sound does
not pan, and Yes I did install the patch from the babysoft web site for grizzly
and I get the same results. I think the problem is also happening with Jim
Kitchens Baseball but have not confirmed this. Again the strange thing is that
its not like the right channel is out it does not pan for some reason. I
installed an older version of direct exe and this has not helped. I have a
second X P system and these games pan fine on that system but not on my main
one. Lastly does any one know the phrase to type in to find out which version
of direct exe you are running that would be great as well so I can see which
version I am running. I would be Very happy if any of you could offer any

Re: [Audyssey] need help with a sound issue

2009-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Sylvester,
I'm not quite sure how to solve your sound card issue, but I'm fairly
certain it isn't a DirectX issue. One thing I think you probably should
have not of done is installed an older version of DirectX. That tends to
cause more problems than it is worth so you will want to install an
upgrade as soon as possible to insure you didn't break anything by
downgrading like that.
Anyway, if you want to know the current build of DirectX you are running
you need to run the dxdiag program. Unfortunately, it isn't very
specific in terms of weather you have say a March or Auggest release of
DirectX, but you can get some info. Go to start, click on run, and type
in dxdiag in the edit field, and click on ok. The dxdiag program will
ask you if you want to check your drivers etc. Answer no, and a window
will appear displaying various system info including your DirectX build
number.

Re: [Audyssey] need help with a sound issue

2009-11-09 Thread Phil Vlasak

hi Sylvester,
the way to find the directX version is in your run box type
dxdiag
You will get a window full of stats on your system plus the version of
directX.

Things to check,
Do you have version 1.0.3 of the game?
Did you take your speech program out of memory?
Are you using the sound blaster equalizer?
You can find this by going to volume then hit alt and will find it in the
first combo box.

If it is set for sound blaster try the other setting.
You also might find an updated audigy driver on the sound blaster web
site.

good luck.

Re: [Audyssey] a question for Raul about his walk-through of Shades of Doom

2009-11-09 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Kim,
Smile. There is no need to appologise We have no set rules about what
topics you can talk about on list as long as the topic is game related.
As this deals with Shades of Doom it is quite on topic for the list.
Just because some people want to talk about MOTA or any other game that
doesn't mean you can't strike up a new topic from time to time.
As for Raul's audio walkthroughs he uses no cheat codes. Like me Raul
loves to play the game straight through without cheating. I don't
remember if he does much talking about the mazes specifically, but he
does use a lot of memorization, shows off various tips and tricks, and
does a fairly good job of creating an introduction for the game. At
least the first 8 levels. He did not do level 9 for the primary fact he
wants the player to discover level 9, the boss level, on their own.

Hi, Raul. Although I don't post much of anything, I'm on the Audicy gaming
list. Not too long ago, I registered my copy of Shades of Doom 1.2. When you
were doing your walk-through for this game, did you use cheat codes, or was it
a matter of maze memorization? I'm asking, because levels two and above are
way too challenging. If I'm not killed by the blob on level two, or a gun
toting mutant human, then, I get stuck in a passage on level three, and have
to blast through a wall with a timed mine, which I sometimes don't have, in
order to get a blasted data wafer. I've already tried the get stuck in a wall
trick and enter 4796153, but it never works. When I was playing in demo mode,
I could always do that, but now that I've registered it, that code doesn't
work. Odds are, I'll probably never get the 2 points I'll need for my
cheat codes. I purchased the cheat codes along with the game. You'd think I'd
already have them. I've looked everywhere for the sodcheats.txt file, but I c
an't find it. I've also looked at the cheats section of
www.audiogames.net
but their information is way out of date. I've looked at lots of documented
reviews people have written about this game, but that hasn't helped either.
They never give any relevant information. They only cover things I already
know about movement and monsters. They never discuss the way things are laid
out in the maze for each level. Lately, it's a guessing game for me. I've
turned on the audio navigator, but sometimes it doesn't help. If you didn't
use cheat codes while doing your walk-through, could you please give me some
tips fo levels two and above. Level one's a snap, and I've already mastered
it. I've gotten good at grenade tossing, although it's hard on level two, when
I find a mutant human shooting a gun and there's a wall separating us. If I
throw a grenade there, I'm as good as dead. So, any tips you have for me would
be great. I'd have posted this to the list, but with all the Moto talk lately,
I have a feeling this topic wouldn't have been accepted, even though it is
on topid. You know how some people are. Just to be safe, though, I thought I'd
contact you privately and off list. Thanks in advance. I really hope this
doesn't bounce back.

Re: [Audyssey] need help with a sound issue

2009-11-09 Thread shaun everiss
well I always get the latest distro of dx whenever it comes out.
At 12:17 p.m. 10/11/2009, you wrote:
Hi Sylvester,
I'm not quite sure how to solve your sound card issue, but I'm fairly certain
it isn't a DirectX issue. One thing I think you probably should have not of
done is installed an older version of DirectX. That tends to cause more
problems than it is worth so you will want to install an upgrade as soon as
possible to insure you didn't break anything by downgrading like that.
Anyway, if you want to know the current build of DirectX you are running you
need to run the dxdiag program. Unfortunately, it isn't very specific in terms
of weather you have say a March or Auggest release of DirectX, but you can get
some info. Go to start, click on run, and type in dxdiag in the edit field,
and click on ok. The dxdiag program will ask you if you want to check your
drivers etc. Answer no, and a window will appear displaying various system
info including your DirectX build number.

Greetings All! I am having a very annoying sound issue. I am running a
system with X P with a sound blaster audigy sound card and the speakers are
set to 5 point 1. Note I have tried to change the sound mode to stereo
headphones with the same results. My problem is with Draconis
Entertainments The Ultimate Soundoku. Note, I have all the other titles by
them such as Monkey Business, Dyno Man Sarah Ten pin alley an Alien outback
and do not have this problem. The problem is with panning, I run the check
speakers option on all those titles, and every other game on my system and
the only other games with panning issues is Grizzly Gulch, and Jim Kitchens
Mach 1 game. What is strange is that the opening title sounds and the menu
sounds are fine but when I start the game I am only getting the left channel.
With Grizzly gulch I get stereo for every sound in the game except when
trying to shoot the gun the clicking sound does not pan, and Yes I did
install the patch from the baby
soft web site for grizzly and I get the same results. I think the problem is
also happening with Jim Kitchens Baseball but have not confirmed this. Again
the strange thing is that its not like the right channel is out it does not pan
for some reason. I installed an older version of direct exe and this has not
helped. I have a second X P system and these games pan fine on that system but
not on my main one. Lastly does any one know the phrase to type in to find
out which version of direct exe you are running that would be great as well so
I can see which version I am running. I would be Very happy if any of you
could offer any suggestions as to what the heck is going on here. Thanks and
Game On! Sly! ---
