Re: [Audyssey] shades of doom, anyone?

2009-12-30 Thread Bryan Peterson
And I must say, all Technoshock ever did was frustrate the living bejesus
out of me. I'm all for more challenging audio games but I think the learning
curve in TS was way too steep. And I don't even know if the game's even
still being worked on anymore. And the ambiance just isn't there either as
far as I'm concerned. Of course that's what you get when all your speech in
game is synthetic. I mean it would fit if the characters were all machines
and things but only then.

THere is plenty to help you get used to the game environment. The
wind and path ambience is wonderful. The best example of navigational
aid in an audio game. If you want step-by-step instructions turn on
the audio navigator in options (press F1).  I just got my key again;
I'm rediscovering what a wonderful game this is. Technoshock
definitely has the better level designs, but SOD's enemies are far
more threatening and fun to face. Sounds are better than TS though
they're not that great. Man if SOD had the sound track of a mainstream
fps I think it'd be unbeatable.

Hello Jim,

For the incoming missile, how about a windy mild whistling sound which is
descending in pitch. This sound would be placed somewhere in the stereo
field. If it is at an angle, it would move across the stereo field as it
descends.

For the targeting pointer, use a solid quiet beeping which pans across the
stereo field and rises or lowers in pitch depending on where you move it.
The missiles would be an explosion sound which is at the pitch of where
the targeter was when it was fired, and covers the pitch and pan range of
the explosion. Any missiles which enter the explosion radius would then
vanish.

If it could track my touch pad or mouse input, it would really be like the
original game. To fire the missiles from the three bases, give each base a
key. Just have all three keys next to each other.

The targeter could also be moved using the four arrow keys.

That sounds like a cool and challenging game.

[Audyssey] rhythm game accessibility

2009-12-30 Thread Eleanor
Hey Yohandy and Scott - you were asking how to get the attention of
folks from Harmonix. If you will write me an Email outlining the
problems there are in accessing their games, and what you would like to
see added to the games to make them more accessible, I will personally
hand it to one of the developers from the company. I go to the monthly
Boston Chapter IGDA meeting. There are one or more developers from
Harmonix that attend regularly. I will talk to them and hand them the
Email at the January meeting. You can send it to me off-line or as an
Audyssey post - but if it is an Audyssey post, please indicate that this
is the message you would like to have go to the Harmonix developers.
Off-line I am elea...@7128.com.

I don't know if it will help or not, but they know that I am a regular
at the meeting and can follow up on it in the future. This might help
some. At least they can't say they never had it brought to their attention.

Eleanor,

Thanks so much for the offer, very cool idea!

Give us a few days to stew on it and put something informative and not
too long together between us. We'll drop you a line with something to
pass along soon though.

Try 'Ping Pong.' It's moderate fun. You flail the ipod like a paddle
when the ball comes towards you. Unlike Pong or Showdown you don't
move the paddle back and forth. It along with other accessible apps

Brian I ran across a pac-man record. It sounds like the same one; the
voice acting is tacky kid poor with cute track names like "take the
fruit and scoot." It's hard to find a physical copy now but youtube
has a couple of tracks. I had the Microsoft Arcade version of Missile
Command about 10 years ago (I go it on a floppy from a friend along
with the PC version of Mortal Kombat 1). You used A S and D to choose
which "missile bass" you shot from and the mouse to aim. Thanks for
clearing up how it actually worked as I really didn't have any idea.

Yohandy, I'm impressed! Not attempted that song myself, but if the
game is even halfway like the coordination I needed to nail the solo
on a real guitar it'd be fun.

Audio cues as an optional thing wouldn't ruin the track imho, because
surely most of us would run through training with them on, it'd make
the figuring out process infinitely less painless, then we'd turn them
off to have a shot at a song in career mode once we were confident.
Of course, this all hinges on Harmonix either implimenting talking
menues or some way of enabling/disabling accessibility features in an
accessible fashion. Yup, badly explained, but hopefully you get my
point.

I've not been to the Harmonix forums or whatever. Would a
well-written thread starter perhaps with a link to a youtube vid of
you or someone similarly decent at the game demoing what's possible be
the type of thing that would get the right sort of attention?

On 12/29/09, Yohandy wrote:
I really enjoy these music games actually. Even the hardest guitar
parts

can be figured out. as an example there's a trophy on lego rock band that
you need to get 100% on Europe's "the final countdown" solo on expert

myself with absolutely no sighted help. If I can play these games anyone
on
this list should be able to as well. If they were to add some sort of
queues
to the track it would just ruin the song with unnecessary beeps or
whatever.

the talking menus would rock though. why don't you all email harmonix and
let them know? that's the only way they'll find out, and they do want to
help the blind according to a forum post I read a while back, they just
don't know what to do. this is a great opportunity guys and everyone
should

let them know. it isn't every day a mainstream company does this and we
could finally be recognized if everyone says something.

I think the easiest thing for me when it comes to these music games is
the

vocals. If companies like Harminix could add talking menus to the game,
especially for the career mode, that'd be helpful. At least we'd have a
chance of getting through the career mode. Right now I'm stuck somewhere
in

career mode, where no matter what I play this next venue that I need to
go

to simply will not unlock. Think I've unlocked a few, but I haven't even
got all the vehicles yet, the Bus and Jet something of which I thought I
already had. So even if they can't think anything for audio cues for
drums
and guitar/bass, vocals would be fine though honestly I'd prefer
something
where I don't have to use my voice. Also, on vocals, some songs are
pretty

hard, and we don't know how high or low the game would allow us to go. On
expert painkiller, for example, the singer goes very high, not as high as
I

could go certainly. I think what a blind person might do is be like Oh,
crap, I have to sing like that? The answer is no, we don't, but I don't
know how high I could go to get the max stars/score possible. Also,
playing

around on expert bass is certainly fun, not as frustrating as learning
guitar cords. Not in career mode though, since if you fail you'll loose
fans, probably stars to the next advancement, etc.

that score board with a score of 240, that's four numbers per second? Is there
actually a way to get that many, and if so, how does one do that?

Re: [Audyssey] more PKB Dice Roler

2009-12-30 Thread Valiant8086
Hi.
I finished another version of the dice roler. It's now possible to press one
button and reroll all the dice that came up the same as the one selected. So
for example in D&D character stats creation if one rolls some 1's, and is
allowed to roll all of those 1's again, they could get into the results combo
box and select one of the 1 results, and press ctrl+shift+r.

There are 12 buttons now that are preset dierolls. they say things like 1d4,
1d6, 4d6, etc. they're all located in a row on the screen and can be tabbed too
or clicked, but can also be activated with f1 through f12. Just got to remember
which function key represents which button. *grin*. So using preset dierolls,
to roll a single 6 sided dice, press f2. that's all there is to it. I think I'm
just about done programming this, too.

Subject: [Audyssey] more PKB Dice Roler

I'm still updating the dice roler with more features. The latest gives it the
ability to roll up to 30 dice in one go, then arrow through a combo box that
shows each die's result. If the user needs to reroll one of the results, they
can arrow to it and press ctrl+r.

I've impliminted a novice mode which is enabled by default. when enabled it
says things in plain english, when disabled it says things like rolling 7d7
instead of rolling 7 7sided dice. When one unchecks novice mode the text and
speech output both get more to the point, simpler for hardcore D&D players to
keep track of, I hope.

When rolling multiple dice, like 7d7, we can choose to have the voiceover
read each result as it is rolled.

I've impliminted the ability to turn the voiceover off, good for those who
would just use a screen reader or who are sighted. Speaking of the voiceover
script, someone contacted me asking me what I thought of the mac. *Lol* I've
never even put my hands on a mac. In this case, voiceover is part of the dice
program that can be included in other auto it programs too that enables it to
provide self voicing, be that through prerecorded files (first attempt), or
through sapi (last resort).

what I'm trying to do here is make the optimal dice program for those who
play D&D. One of the pending changes I have in mind is to provide shortcut keys
to do common dierolls,, like 1d6, with just one keypress.

It's not yet available on the site but I just changed from using a loop to
find out what the user was doing to the dialogue to letting the controlls in
the dialogue fire off events when activated. I think that made the dice program
quite a bit more responsive.

One more thing. I think I will charge 20 dollars for it when I get it done.
How does that sound?

heh, just joking. It will be free. *lol*.

Well that's probably enough chatter. Here's a link if anyone wants to try
this out.
