Re: [Audyssey] question about Ken's Dreamtech site?
hmmm. I'd like to help you. I have an unlimited connection right about now however server wise I don't have a dedicated system. In fact I have a router and thats that. its only a home line so I can't actually do much. Ok, I know andrelouis may have hosting. tbrn is supposed to have hosting but its not to much still 20 bucks us I think for a gb. Maybe in a bit I may get another system. ofcause thats the other issue there are only a couple places out of the way another extra system will go. one of these is under my desk and since i sleep in the same room,... next I have no idea about this stuff. I know this is probably not a full solution but if you get dropbox you can give links to the versions of the game. Ofcause you can't do any shopping card like thing at all. Re: [Audyssey] question about Ken's Dreamtech site?
Hey all, it's nice to see some love for my games yet. I am working to get a web host, but with two kids and not working it's a bit tough. My Pac Mate source code, scripts, graphics files and stuff are on Braillesoft, but I don't have a place to put the other games. I don't even have the source code to World of Darkness or Wrecking ball anymore, let alone the Little Lost Puppy, and that is a real bummer, cuz I wanted to port Wrecking ball to the Pac mate. Anyway, as well as the Quake mod I'm working on, I'm in the middle of making three games: Phrase Madness: Match the beginnings of phrases with their endings. It has a TV game show feel to it, with me playing the part of a sometimes rude but mostly funny host. With over 200 phrases, there are literally thousands of possible combinations, and if you make a funny, the host will comment. For example, "blind as a" from the beginning. You know the end is bat, but say you end up selecting the ending of "apple of my eye." You get "Blind as a eye," and the host laughing, saying he likes the concept but it's poor grammar. Some very adult combinations have come up, but instead of commenting I'll leave those to your imagination. Space Attack is a Space Invaders clone. It is unlike any other game of its kind for the blind, because all 72 ships come at you--all at once, which means you get to choose which to shoot and when. Three shields protect you from enemy fire, but their guns weaken the shield, meaning that you can't habitually use the same one over and over--or the shield blows up and you're toast. At the store, you can buy upgrades to the shields, which give them more strength. You can upgrade your gun as well, either by making it shoot faster, making it able to shoot more than the original number of rounds before the battery has to recharge, or by making your gun bigger and able to target multiple columns. You can shoot UFO's for more points, and, if you have enough points and feel risky, gamble with them to try earning more. The more points you score, the more you can buy or gamble. A driving song makes it complete--the perfect game to play on your PC or your Pac Mate or other PDA. I'm also working on a new bubble breaking game with more features than any other of its kind. It's called grynns, and You'll even be able to play sighted friends when it's done. It has the traditional modes, like in Jawbreaker--normal, shifter, mega shift. It also has other, new modes you won't find anywhere else. When you select a color, the smiling face painted on it turns to an open mouth, and it sings the color in a specified pitch. Once you learn the pitches, you can hear what colors are added by the pitches of dinging chimes, which are panned appropriately to give an idea where the new face appears. Each of these games will sell for $10 per game--that is , $10 for the PC version or $10 for the PDA version. If you want both, they will be purchaseable for $15. If you want a pack with all the games, it can be had for $35. These games are still in development, but each is over halfway done. Do you live near Sandusky Ohio, or are you planning a trip to Cedar Point? Receive a massage at very competitive rates--$40 per hour for a revitalizing therapeutic massage, $65 per house call--any time, anywhere (within reason.) Hi. I noticed the update business was fixed, thanks. I had a couple of strategical questions, particularly related to how to protect ships when sailing, and how best to get infantry off a troop transport, sinse currently while I can defeat the computer on easy on land, as soon as more than one island is involved things get difficult. Re: [Audyssey] q9 bug possibly
Hi Yohandy, First, I had to shut down the Blastbay list due to email traffic restrictions on my server. I switched to a discussion forum instead, which people are very welcome to join. Second, the way this works is as follows. There is a counter that says how often you are allowed to press the space bar key. Whenever the key is pressed, the counter is reset so that you have to wait another x milliseconds before you are allowed to press it again. This means that, if you press it so fast so that you are doing it while the counter does not yet allow you to, you will be wasting a few moments pushing down and releasing the key. So while it is actually not letting you do it more slowly in reality, the fact that it takes time to push down and release the key causes this. Hence, the best way is as you say to tap the key in a sort of rhythm which could be considered a bit of a skill in itself and would thus add some more individuality to each player so to speak. Especially, of course, since the allowed speed is different for each weapon so it takes even more practise. In short, this is not a bug but a very much intended behavior. Kind regards, Philip Bennefall - Original Message - From: "Yohandy" To: "Gamers Discussion list" Sent: Saturday, March 20, 2010 10:17 PM Subject: [Audyssey] q9 bug possibly Since the blastbay list no longer exist I'm posting this here. I don't know if anyone has noticed, but when you're killing enemies, if you hit space bar very quickly your attacks will slow down. this is bad because enemies will get a chance to attack back if you aren't attacking them. you need to hit space bar in a sort of tapping motion to get maximum number of swings with the club. I think this is definitely something that requires fixing so that no matter how quickly you press space bar, you swing the weapon at maximum speed. Raul has done some fantastic game recordings of quite a number of games, including a full walk through for Loan Wofl, most all of BSC Games' Registerable tiles, Super Liam, and possibly more, though I can't think of them now. Re: [Audyssey] USA Games News 3/18/2010
Hi Dennis, As I outlined in my news letter we may eventually support the Mac, but for technical reasons we have no immediate plans to support the Mac at this time. One of the main reasons we aren't going to support the Mac is because of the fact Mac OS really doesn't have anything that compares to DirectX. Oh, there is SDL, but it lacks many features of DirectX which means Mac ports of our titles would lack features of the Windows release. As a result it is likely that Mac users would prefer to buy the Windows release and run it on their Mac's via Bootcamp or something similar. I don't think it is fair to the customer to pay the same price for software for their Mac, and not get all of the same features that Windows users have just because their platform doesn't support that feature currently. The other reason is market size. We recently ran a survey of the accessible games community and discovered considerably fewer Mac users than Windows users. From that standpoint alone the Mac simply isn't cost effective for an accessible game developer right now. The fact is the accessible games community is a pretty small minority market as it is, and we do well enough to sell to a Windows market. The market potential for Mac customers is considerably smaller and probably not going to be worth the time and expensive of rewriting a large portion of our games to run on that platform. The final reason is the fact I currently don't own a Mac myself. This means I'd have to borrow one from my in-laws to work on the project which isn't necessarily a workable solution since my brother-in-law uses it for work. So considering the fact I have to rewrite a certain portion of my games, recompile them, and test them on the Mac I'd probably have to purchase one specifically for the purpose. I'm cash strapped at the moment so that's something I'd put off until I have the money to invest in. So inconclusion it isn't a mattr of wanting too or not wanting too. I'd love to create more games for Mac and even Linux myself, but after researching it I've discovered it is pretty complicated, APIs like SDL have a long ways to go before they are equal to DirectX, and they are small minority markets to begin with. I am a Linux user myself, use it daily, but I prefer Windows for games just because the games that are developed, that can be developed, are better. Same holds true for Mac unfortunately. Re: [Audyssey] Looking for the following game.
I've never had a modern version of Oregon Trail. I do, however, still have it on an old Apple II diskette. Of course, running it would require a real Apple II or an emulator, both of which I have. It's funny how games of that day worked. It was a text-based game, using all text input. And yet, I'm sure, at the times when you shot something, they wanted there to be at least a little challenge. So what they did was to have you type in a word that sounded like a gun firing. The four words I've been asked to type are bang, blam, wham, and pow. Supposedly, the faster you type the randomly chosen word and hit return, the better your chances of actually hitting your target. Of course if, in your hurry to type the correct word, you should make a typo, I'm sure the shot misses. I know it has been a very long time since our last issue, and truth is there hasn't been much to say over the last couple of months or so. Mostly we have been involved in rewriting the core of our Genesis engine which has been a massive undertaking. More about that later. However, we finally have some good news on the way. It looks like 2010 is going to be a more productive year for us, and we are finally going to start delivering some of the titles we promised. That is certainly some good news in deed. So without further comment let's get straight to the news. Genesis Engine As many of you may recall back in early December we decided to rewrite our game engine, Genesis 3D, from scratch in C++. The rewrite was suppose to resolve several ongoing issues with Mysteries of the Ancients such as: problems with newer 64 byt Windows platforms, improve system performance, resolve some bugs do to Managed DirectX itself, to simplify the installation of the game, and possibly create cross-platform versions for Mac and Linux. To a large degree our rewrite that attempts to meet all of these design goals was a success over all. However, during the course of development we discovered that supporting cross-platform versions of our engine and games isn't technically or financially feasible at this time. For one thing there really is no standardized way to program an application for Mac, Linux, and Windows. Each of these platforms have there own unique libraries, tool kits, etc we call APIs that are often as different from each other as the operating systems themselves. This obviously makes it difficult to write anything that can be compiled and run on another operating system without some degree of rewriting some part of your program to support the new platform. While there are game APIs specifically designed to help create cross-platform games such as OpenAL, SFML, SDL, etc these APIs don't meet the same standards of DirectX or XNA, and lack features I would otherwise get by using a more professional API like DirectX. To explain this situation better imagine writing a game such as Raceway where you want to support special game controllers such as a racing wheel with force feedback support. While SDL, SFML, and DirectX all have reasonable support for standard devices like mice and keyboards the same can't be said about specialized game controllers like racing wheels. SDL, for example, has very generic joystick support that often doesn't work at all on Linux and Mac, and has no support for specialized game controllers such as a racing wheel with force feedback ability. This obviously is somewhat of a disadvantage as I can't provide the same degree of features on Mac and Linux releases that I could on Windows releases. Another case in point is DirectSound verses something like OpenAL. OpenAL is a decent audio API for Mac, I can't argue that, but at the same time it lacks features I could get with DirectSound. One very simple example is a stereo pan control. In games like Mysteries of the Ancients the sounds only need to be panned left and right. This is a simple process with DirectSound as it has a function for this. With OpenAL it was designed with 3d audio support in mind and it lacks a basic pan control which is over kill for a game like Mysteries of the Ancients. So in other words with OpenAL I have to use the 3d audio processing weather I need it or not. This is hardly ideal for a side-scroller. There are plenty of other technical issues I could mention here, but I won't. Needless to say creating cross-platform games is less than ideal for the developer or the end customer alike. There are, however, commercial routes I could take such as licensing Transgaming's Cedega and Cider cross-platform engines, but this is also expensive. Before I go that route I'd have to be sure I'd get my money back on the investment, and from what I've seen so far the Mac and Linux markets are still too small to make

[Audyssey] Time of Conflict
Hi all, Someone told me to join this list since there were a few questions people were having that I might be able to answer. First, the second tutorial link has been fixed. Next. Hopefully, the download for Time of Conflict is fine now. It was a last minute change I made that caused the problem. There is a FAQ on the Time of Conflict page that may answer some of the other questions that were passed on to me from the list. Check these out, and if they are not answered there, I'll try to answer them here. Oh yes, I heard that someone tried to make a map and it had an error when run. If you could send the map my way, I'll take a look at it and fix the map or the program ASAP. Here is a status on the multi-user version. Development is going well and we are hoping that in a couple months or so we will go into beta testing. As a single-user game, we are pretty happy with it right now. [Audyssey] q9 bug possibly
Since the blastbay list no longer exist I'm posting this here. [Audyssey] Empire, again
Hi again, Ach. I hit the send command a bit early, so please pardon the incomplete message. As I was about to say, the most confusing part of the game is probably the sheer variety of options available. The map comes in at a close second, but I'll try my best to explain below. The map's made up of sectors, which you can conquer and designate to be anything from manufacturing plants to research centers. The coordinate system is a variant on cartesian, with your capital at (0,0). The confusing part is that it isn't a typical grid. Instead, the designers opted to use hexes, a choice which a lot of sighted people find more realistic but which is a bit weird for us. You can go up left, up right, left and right, and down left and down right but not straight up and down. It does take some getting used to. Once you've understood that, the next issues to worry about are a bit more practical. The game can be found at www.wolfpackempire.com, and requires a specialized client to play. You could use Telnet, like a mud, but it's not recommended. I use Linux myself, and find the "basic empire client" very useable. Your milage may vary under Windows, but it shouldn't be impossible. The interface is rather mud-like, with commands being entered at a prompt and responses scrolling up the screen. THe one big difference is that a mud tends to send things in realtime as they happen. Empire tends to leave you alone while you type, updating only when you send your command. There are tiny exceptions, like a notification of new messages arriving, but that's about it. The game I play in is what's known in Empire circles as a blitz. Blitzes are unique in that they run continuously, resetting every so often. They don't require the more elaborate registration processes other longer term games do. Typically, each blitz publishes a list of country numbers, say from 1 to 10. To play, you log in with one of those numbers and change your password, which is initially the same as the number. I'm afraid this game is complicated enough that I can't really give a decent synopsis here. There's a ton of information to cover, and it's somewhat hard to know where to start. So, if you're interested, look at the website, and reply here. I'll do my best to help people over the considerable humps. Best and enjoy, Zack. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] empire: another accessible strategy game
Hi All, I've recently been inspired to get back into an old strategy game called Empire. It's multiplayer-only, and perhaps the most complicated game accessible to the blind in gameplay terms. I rather love it, though I warn from personal experience it can be a bit adictive. If anybody here's familiar with Civilization this game is roughly similar. Let me emphasize that it's not a typical abstract web-based strategy game. The map is essential to playing, and I'll be honest, it's confusing at first. Simply put, you play against other human players in an attempt for world domination. You start roughly at the end of the cavalry era and are able to research technology up to and above nuclear weapons, not to mention build a rather bewildering variety of planes, land units and ships. The most confusing part --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] Mota and tts
Hi Shaun, Not on your life. Close to pro my buttt. You got to be joking me right? First, of all the SB Live line of cards are old technology. Yesterday's technology, and now are considered one of Creative's low budget value sound cards. Definitely not the bleeding edge high end sound cards they use to be back in the late 90's or so. If you want to talk pro grade sound card something like the X-Fi would be more on the list of higher end cards for musicians and sound designers. Second, Creative Labs has been considerably falling behind in quality and standards, and if you pay for one of their high priced cards you are buying the name not the quality. I've had a number of their Audegy cards totally fail after a couple of months of use, and I have a friend who invested in an X-Fi only to find it was defective right out of the box, and had to exchange it for a replacement one that worked. So Creative is no longer the be all or end all of sound cards. Third, you do realise that a Del with a 2.8 GHZ processor is on the low end of processor speed and power these days? My Compaq laptop purchased two years ago has a 3.6 GHZ Intel processor in it, and even that is a bit slow compared to what I could purchase now. So it is not even remotely in the "pro" catagory you speak of. Cheers! I've been trying this for awhile, for some reason, the map builder doesn't seem to work for me. My map checks out and compiles fine, and yet when I play it, I get a run-time error several moves in. Also, not sure if anyone can help. I've not been able to send or receive on teh gmagames list for a long time now. When I checked it said I am still subscribed, but nothing would go through or come in. Any suggestion? Time of Conflict from GMA games. Time of Conflict is a strategy game that can be used by the visually impaired and sighted alike. The goal of the game is to subdue the enemy and capture all of its cities. When a city is captured it will begin producing forces that may be used against the enemy. You may produce infantry, armoured units, fighters, destroyers, submarines, troop transports, aircraft carriers, and battleships. You may play on a computer-generated map or a premade map provided with the game, or by using the included map builder you can use a map you developed yourself. The game has five difficulty levels, several premade maps, several map sizes, and a range of games types from a complete sea battle to a land-only battle. Depending on the size of map selected and your familiarity with the game, Time of Conflict may last hundreds of time units and may involve hundreds of land, sea, and air units. The game was designed so that you can get by with a dozen or so keystrokes, but dozens more are available for the experience player. A context-Sensitive menu is available which makes learning the game much easier. This menu only displays the actions which are available to the current unit at the current point in time. We are currently working towards making Time of Conflict a multi-player game. You will be able to play against one to three other players in addition to playing the computer. Stay tuned. It is now in public beta and the download file is 20 MB. http://www.gmagames.com/toc.shtml --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. [Audyssey] Time of conflict tutorial?
Hi. The link for the second in depth tutorial for time of conflict on the Gma page gives a 404. If David greenwood did make the tutorial, is it possible someone could please either upload it or see if he can fix the link, sinse that was the tutorial dealing with combat and such. [Audyssey] Time of conflict stratogy
Wel I finally! wonne! It took a couple of hours, and about 280 moves, and that was on the practice map against the computer on easy. I must confess part of it might have been me forgetting to unload troops from transports after they got to where they were going, which wasn't clever. It was sort of a random game. i concentrated on building armour and building up all the cities of my island, and then basically endured a long siege where any ship I put out of harbour got blown up, but the enemy only once landed, and were crushed by a legion of armour (is it me, or do those sound like mecha sutes). Eventually! I got a transport through onto one of the smaller islands, and from there things just got better until I eventually invaded the enemy homeland and my hoards attacked in huge force! Actually by the end there was the remnants of the once mighty enemy fleet running around trying to ambush my ships while I controlled the entire land, and once I'd stormed their last city (easier said than done because by then I had so many troops I couldn't find the ones on the transport I wanted), it was a matter of turning everything over to naval production. In general there are several things I'm unsure of. Firstly, naval stratogy! it seems very hard to actually have ships survive for any length of time, also, I'm not sure what the manual meant about subs getting an advantage, sinse they seem to just get blown up. In fact in general, I've noticed if you initiate an attack, your much less likely to win, then if it happens on a random patrol. So any advice would be appreciated. I'll also admit I didn't try out fighters, sinse my previous game had just seen them get destroyed in hundreds and they didn't seem to serve a purpose, most odd, as you'd expect them to be great for strafing and bombing runs against enemy troops or cities. I'll now go back to the manual and have a look, but I do like thus far even if I haven't worked out everything yet. Beware the grue!
