I'm actually not certain Any! audio games company has any offices or
facilities at all beyond the computers on which everyone does their
developement and various other resources.

Remember audio games companies aren't huge affairs with hundreds of staff
and a lot of money, in fact they are mostly just people developing when and
how they can and attempting to earn at least some cash and fund developement
of more games.

the companies are virtual, meaning that there are no offices, no

No kidding. I have a feeling that if even one developer had offices and
hundreds of staff as you described Dark, we'd probably have at least a few
games that were almost on par with what mainstream games are like nowadays
or at least pretty close to that.

2010-06-06 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Alfredo,

I have a corner desk in the living room of my government subsidized apartment.
On the desk I have a game development computer and a Internet computer. I have
a couple of tera byte external hard drives and a couple of other external hard
drives as well as a Triple Talk USB hardware speech synthesizer, a steering
wheel with gas and brake peddle, a joystick and a game pad. There is a monitor
that is never turned on except for for company and a 20 year old 9 pin dot
matrix printer. So that is pretty much Kitchensinc. Oh yeah and a nice swivel
rocker chair that I bought some time ago. It is very comfortable.

I seem to remember that Liam said that he has a recording studio. Not sure
about what other game developers have for their work space.

Re: [Audyssey] the vi-fit project

2010-06-06 Thread Dakotah Rickard
I just got a Wii for my birthday. I've not tried the vi-fit stuff, but
the Wii sports is fairly playable, and Sports Resort, the sequal, has
games that are even more playable, including a wonderful sword
fighting simulation that keeps my arms pretty tired.

The only thing about the games is that the results of your actions are
not very clear. In bowling, knocking over six pins sounds a lot like
knocking over nine pins sounds a lot like knocking over all ten,
except that there's an announcement when all ten are down, depending
on whether you get a strike or a spare.

I'm going to have to go check these games out, but before I do, I have
to say that I hope that they haven't lessened the games to make them
accessible. Here's to success, eh?

Hello Angel,
Yes, there are a couple of games that might be of some interest to you.
First, in the RPG genre we have Entombed which is a roguelike RPG game
with a lot of content, several playable classes, high quality audio
effects, etc.
Second, for a game like World of Warcraft there is a game called
SoundRTS. The name isn't all that great, but the game is similar to
Warcraft in many ways. you can build castles, Workshops, Keeps, etc as
well as train knights, footmen, archers, dragons, etc. You can play
online in a player verses player match or play against the computer.
That's another game I highly recommend trying.

Hi.

You can find out all about entombed, time of conflict, or in fact many other
games by checking the game database at www.audiogames.net and/or the
accessible games websites list at www.pcsgames.net.

audiogames.net has pages for many games like entombed and time of conflict
with download links, links to the webasites, information and links to audio
reviews and tutorials, while pcs has a huge overview of hundreds accesible
games and the sites to find them.

Not to be funny, but does American printing house really count as a game
developer?

I just ask, because they don't seem to have produced any games in years, and
in fact I've never managed to get their games to work at all on any machine
I've tried them on (one reason why armadillow army has no description on
audiogames.net, then it doesn't actually seem that their games are
really intended for adults or serious game players anyway, it rather
struck me from the descriptions that they seemed more education orientated
and simplified and thus aimed very much at kids.

There's also the online game Sryth at www.sryth.com. It's not entirely free
but at twenty bucks for a full year's subscription it's well worth it
considering the amount of content in the game. And the stories are
excellent. There's also the option to donate but it's just that, an option.
And the amount is completely up to you if you choose to do so, although the
minimum amount is ten dollars. But you get additional rewards if you do
donate. I try to donate a little here and there since it's the first and
only online RPG that I've found that is both A. accessible and B. has
consistently kept my interest in the nearly six years I've been playing it.

I oe my own external drive a lot, if I hadn't been careful about backups,
when my desktop exploded in mid 2008 it could've been a very major desaster
indeed, sinse as well as games, resources to do with games, music, audio
books and websites I'm interested in, I also rely on my computer for
everything to do with my phd, including writing it, keeping in touch with
the uni, and storing articals which i've had read onto my rowland.

Losing these would basically send years of work down the tubes!

I'd now never be without an external drive at all.

I just ask, because they don't seem to have produced any games in years,

[Audyssey] Game Developers was Reviewing Games

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Alfredo,
Like a lot of *.com companies most of the accessible game developers I
know of work out of their homes. They either rent or own their own
web server, and they don't have an actual office etc.
In terms of programming languages there are several programming
languages being used to create accessible games. As for myself
Mysteries of the Ancients is being written in C++. My first game,
Final Conflict, was written in C# .Net. SoundRTS is written in Python
2.4, Jim Kitchens games are written in Visual Basic 6, and Blind
Adrenaline's Rail Racer is written in VB .Net. So my point is pretty
much each developer uses whatever he or she likes. There is no set
standard here.
As far as creating demos goes there are lots of ways of going about
it. Usually the developer in question writes his/her own security
tool that unlocks the game and turns it into a licensed product. Again
there is no standard way how to do this. It is up to the developer how
much content gets shown in a demo, how they create the licensing keys,
whatever.

On 6/6/10, Castanedagarcia_Alfredo casta...@hsd.k12.or.us wrote:
So, I am becoming quie interested in sites like this one. X-sight

or is it a virtual company that is on a server.
What kind of programming lanugage do you use for some games. I remember that
one of the members askied how you made it possible to have a demo, and how
you had to buy the software so you could pllay everything. I had hat same
question, but never asked it. But someone else asked it, and I already know.
Also, draconis Entertainment is taking a long time for them to reply to my
message. I do not want to buy something, and not register it. So, I wish I
could get some word, I already sent them one E-mail message.

[Audyssey] To Liam Erven was Streamway

2010-06-06 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hello there,

From what I remember, this is an issue related to interfacing with Streemway
from Visual Basic 6. It has to do with the fact that VB 6 passes a so called
Unicode string as the registration name and key, whilst Streemway is
expecting an Ansi string. So this is not an issue with Streemway itself, but
rather with the way that it is being called. Liam, I seem to recall you had
a way to fix this a while back?

Kind regards,

Philip Bennefall

Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store

2010-06-06 Thread dark

mmm, space is really litle object with computers these days.

my harddrive is currently 500 gb, and I've filled barely 150. My external
drive (which i bought several years ago in 2005), is 236 gb, however
when it gets full i'll simply upgrade to something larger.

With drives up to two terrabite in size, really you don't need to
worry, pluss of course you can always have a second drive disk stuck in
a desktop.

the only mildly irritating thing is that my laptop bought in 2006 has only a
36 gb drive, but sinse most of the 150 gb I have is audio and music, I just
substitute what I need when I need it.

Beware the grue!

I have to agree, because at least if your computer goes wrong, you still
have your hard drive. Off cource if you have a lode of stuff, it could mean
that you can't pack some things in to your hard drive.

Well you can alwways have extra space loaded on your computer, but
keeping a separate harddrive just for backups avoids any and all misshaps
from viruses to hardware failures to your computer being stolen by
gremlins and maide into a crown for the new king of Gremlinland!

My external drive sits in a box under my bed, and every few weeks I pull
it out, plug it in, and copy all the important stuff across, then unplug
it again and put it away.

Thus, I can try anything with my pc I wish, don't have to worry as much
about viruses, and can easily transfer stuff to my laptop or any other
machine without hassle (though I also own a memory key for quick
transfers betwene times as well).

Actually as I said, it was a hardware issue, and thus irritreavable.

If it had been a virus, there would've been no need to buy a new machine, as
I could've just reformatted, then reloaded everything from my external
drive.

Re: [Audyssey] To Liam Erven was Streamway

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Philip,
H...I do see that as somewhat problematic though as the problem
isn't specific to VisualBasic 6. This also happens with any .Net
application because the .Net String class converts ascii strings to
unicode automatically which makes sense most Windows applications use
unicode strings rather than ascii. I supppose if you pass the string
directly to the Sw_Init function it wouldn't do that, but if you use
the String class it probibly would try and pass an Unicode string. I
think we need to look into this more as Unicode is pretty common and
ascii is almost a thing of the past as far as Windows is concerned.

On 6/6/10, Philip Bennefall phi...@u7142039.fsdata.se wrote:
 Hello there,

From what I remember, this is an issue related to interfacing with Streemway
from Visual Basic 6. It has to do with the fact that VB 6 passes a so called
Unicode string as the registration name and key, whilst Streemway is
expecting an Ansi string. So this is not an issue with Streemway itself, but
rather with the way that it is being called. Liam, I seem to recall you had
a way to fix this a while back?

 Kind regards,

 Philip Bennefall

2010-06-06 Thread Muhammed Deniz
Sometimes, you don't have chances like that. Alfredo, if its really a bad
situation, yeah, a format. But the thing you need to remember is what type
of virus it is. If its a small virus, probably you wouldn't really have a
hard time getting it off your system. But if its a trojen, well what shall I
say, it would be a hard time backing it up. Sometimes you could use a back
up account or something, but if the situation is so so so bad that you
didn't have any choice, a reformat would really really help, so now do you
get my point on what I'm saying? That's why harddrives are inhandy. So for
an example. I had a memerry stick, but I had a really bad virus, but I had
alot of content which is about 200 gigs but my memeryy stick could hold
about 16 gigs. But I didn't have a hard drive. All I had is a memerry stick.
But when you also have a computer, well at least if you have another
computer, I shall say that you wouldn't really have a hard time backing up
things.

Re: [Audyssey] looking for a good rpg.

2010-06-06 Thread dark
Rpg stands for role playing game, and can refer generallly to any game (on
computer or off it), in which you play a role in an interactive story or
experience with use of statistics.

Rpgs have quite some history, but generally they started becoming popular in
the 1970's, --- though those were tabletop games like dungeons and dragons,
rather than played on a computer.

Mud, on the other hand stands for multiple user dungeon (or dimention
depending upon whome you ask), and refers to text adventure games played
specifically on a computer in which several users in put commands and
control characters on a sentralized server, rather than one player running
through a text adventure program on a computer.

it thus has a far narrower meaning than rpg, indeed there are far more
rpgs than muds.

Beware the gRue!

Rpg stands for role playing game, and can refer generallly to any game (on
computer or off it), in which you play a role in an interactive story or
experience with use of statistics.

Rpgs have quite some history, but generally they started becoming popular
in the 1970's, --- though those were tabletop games like dungeons and
dragons, rather than played on a computer.

Mud, on the other hand stands for multiple user dungeon (or dimention
depending upon whome you ask), and refers to text adventure games played
specifically on a computer in which several users in put commands and
control characters on a sentralized server, rather than one player running
through a text adventure program on a computer.

it thus has a far narrower meaning than rpg, indeed there are far
more rpgs than muds.

Re: [Audyssey] To Liam Erven was Streamway

2010-06-06 Thread Philip Bennefall

Hi Thomas,

The majority of Unicode string classes will most likely also have conversion
functions to convert between Unicode and Ascii, as at least in C++ both are
still used quite extensively. In essence, it's just a normal char* rather
than a wchar*. The stl string class, for instance, has the c_str method to
do this. I'm not too sure about the .net languages, but if at any point I
write a .net binding for Streemway I'll make a wrapper to take a Unicode
string and simply do the conversion internally.

Kind regards,

Hi Philip,
H...I do see that as somewhat problematic though as the problem
isn't specific to VisualBasic 6.

Re: [Audyssey] looking for a good rpg.

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello Alfredo,
RPG is short for roll playing game. It is a style of game heavily
steeped in stat based play where you generally roll dice to determine
attack damage, weather something was successful or not, etc. Above all
you create a character picking things such as race, class, etc and
play that character in a large game world or dungeon whatever the case
might be.
The term roll playing game actually has a broad meaning because we
could be talking about the old paper and pen games like Dungeons and
Dragons or we might be talking about an electronic roll playing game
like Angband, Final Fantacy, Entombed, whatever. It has a broad
meaning as I said.
A mud, multiuser dungeon, is more limited. Muds by nature are always
played on line, and is generally set up for multiuser play, and
requires a special client called a mud client or you can use a generic
telnet client if you wish.

to the list. I've noticed several new and old list members sending off
topic posts to the list. That's a big no-no, and our polacy here is if
you believe something is off topic to ask one of the list moderators
about it before posting. To speak to a moderator about this list, a
potential subject, etc send an e-mail to

In short an off topic post is defined by anything that is not game
related. You can talk about games weather they are accessible,
partially accessible, electronic or card/board games, game consoles,
joysticks, etc. Basicly, if it is game related in any way it is
probibly on topic here. What is not on topic is general computer help

his/her signature line from. Such questions can be asked off list or

Rpg stands for role playing game, and can refer generallly to any game
(on computer or off it), in which you play a role in an interactive story
or experience with use of statistics.

Rpgs have quite some history, but generally they started becoming popular
in the 1970's, --- though those were tabletop games like dungeons and
dragons, rather than played on a computer.

Mud, on the other hand stands for multiple user dungeon (or dimention
depending upon whome you ask), and refers to text adventure games played
specifically on a computer in which several users in put commands and
control characters on a sentralized server, rather than one player
running through a text adventure program on a computer.

it thus has a far narrower meaning than rpg, indeed there are far
more rpgs than muds.

Hi Phil,
$39? I can't believe they're charging nearly that much. Now, RailRacer was
nearly 40 bucks, but it had a lot of unlockable content, a career mode with
classes, and numerous upgrades and tracks to race, plus the ability to make
more tracks if you wish, as crazy asyou like (I just recently made one with
an 800 foot jump, heheh). Then there's entombed, which costs the same thing,
but there are also countless pathways to play in that game, and to be honest
Jason could charge even more to and we'dstill get our money's worth. But for
APH games? Um...no.

Yes, there are. Right off the top of my head there is a free chess
game that uses Sapi produced by Spoonbill Games. In fact I have a copy
on my game server in the downloads directory. The direct link to the
 Spoonbil Games directory is

Hi.

You can find out all about entombed, time of conflict, or in fact many
other games by checking the game database at www.audiogames.net and/or the
accessible games websites list at www.pcsgames.net.

audiogames.net has pages for many games like entombed and time of conflict
with download links, links to the webasites, information and links to
audio reviews and tutorials, while pcs has a huge overview of hundreds
accesible games and the sites to find them.

Hi Alfredo,
Yes, I own USA Games Interactive, and am the lead software developer.
So pretty much anything that happens at USA Games is my doing.
Everyone else involved in the company are either testers, people who
handle sales/support, or the ocational software developer I ask to
help out with the code.
Anyway, as for when Mysteries of the Ancients 1.0 will be released I
don't have a specific date and time set. The best answer I can give is
that it will be released when it is ready to be released. Besides
adding the rest of the game levels I'm still awaiting some voice
acting to be finished by my voice actress, and need to purchase some
extra sounds. Developing a game this complex is quite a lot of work,
and could take a while to reach 1.0 although I should have it done by
early fall.

Re: [Audyssey] Game Developers was Reviewing Games

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Alfredo,
Well, your question is a bit off topic for this list. However, as game
developers do have to deal with managing web sites and have to process
orders I'll answer the question for that reason.
When I mentioned owning or renting a web server I was actually talking
about an actual network server running something like Linux, Windows
Server, FreeBSD, etc. For example, my web host has a web server
running Red Hat Linux Enterprise, Apache Web Server, CPanel, MySQL
database system, Sendmail, etc. In other words it is a dedicated
server running everything required to host web sites, e-mail accounts,
internet databases, blogs, process online orders, you name it.
As for Apache Web Server it is quite accessible. I haven't used the
Windows port of Apache much myself, but I have had extensive use of
its Linux version. Mostly configuring Apache comes down to editing
configuration files in a text editor like nano or gedit and saving
your changes. Then, if apache is already running simply stop and
restart the service for the changes to take effect. Since server
administration is way off topic for this list I won't be discussing it
here, but yes Apache is accessible provided you have a screen reader
installed on your server. For Linux based servers it will probibly be
something like Speakup if you have a shell environment or Orca if you
have a graphical environment installed.
As for processing orders there is specialized shopping cart software a
game developer can use on his/her web server to process orders. One
such software I know about is called Agora. Most web hosts have this
software installed and can be easily configured through CPanel. Then,
it is mainly a matter of including the shopping cart scripts in your
web site.
As for automating codes that is usually done via a php script or
similar the author has scripted in his/her web site. It takes the
e-mail provided by the shopping cart like Agora, generates a code, and
e-mails it to the end user. As far as automated licensing codes being
inaccurate I guess that would depend on the script and weather or not
the developer made a mistake when creating his/her script. Generally
speaking automated systems work just fine, but if the script has a bug
then well mistakes can happen. Computers aren't perfect, and make
mistakes too.
As for Tarzan Junior it was written in Javascript, but as Philip
himself pointed out Javascript sucks when it comes to game
programming. I didn't forget about it so much as felt it wasn't worth
mentioning. There are games out there written in AutoIt as well, but
as it wasn't meant for gaming that language shouldn't be considered a
serious programming language for games. Some do, unfortunately, but
the fact is anyone with any real programming skills at all would never
think of using AutoIt for games.

HTH

On 6/6/10, Castanedagarcia_Alfredo casta...@hsd.k12.or.us wrote:
Is apache a good accessible web server? Is it accessible for the blind
communityy? What is the best web server for a blind individual to use.
Because I am quite interested of starting to web code, and post a personal
 webpage.
You need not answered my question about the registration process, because my
question was asked by someone else and it was answered. But, I am curious
about how people design pages that can process orders, and transfer things
like these. Is it true that automated systems generate inaccurate codes?
Remember about a week ago I purchased Monkey business, and the e-mail I got
had an invalid key. I want to fix this problem immediately, before the 35
 days are up.
I think there is one more programming language3 you have forgotten about.
Tarzan Junior was written in JavaScript.

 Hi,
Oh, I always do. I drink several cups on my level 6 coffee break.
Usually I take a cup along just in case killing blobs, mutant humans,
mutated dogs, ratts, etc gets to be thirsty work. Still I wonder why
the guy can drink that much coffee and doesnt' have to take a leak.
Although, considering where the nearest toilet isin the game I guess
he doesnt' want to head back down to level 5 to go pee.

 Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Reviewing Games was getting back to the store

2010-06-06 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,
Sure. I understand all that. I was just thinking the way it was
presented was nicely done and we could expand on that idea for game
developers in getting our games more out there so to speak.

On 6/6/10, dark d...@xgam.org wrote:
 Hi Tom.

I'd be very glad to put together a promo if you'd like certainly.

Bare in mind that the purpose of that podcast was essentially to display the
general possibilities of what more complex and interesting things were
possible in audio games to people who do not themselves play audio games,
not actually to review games with the intention of having people buy them.

It was the third in a series on gaming with a visual imparement (the first
two done by Barry ellis are very much worth checking out). The first two
generally focused on the inaccessibility of console games, so Barry asked me
for a look at three games which showed the possibilities of what interesting
and complex things could be done in an audio game.

hence my choice. Entombed, a complex rpg, time of conflict, a complex war
stratogy game with unique map overview, and Mota, an action adventure game
with puzle elements, multiple weapons and considderable audio plot and
 ambience.

Pluss, all these titles are recent, and thus show what is going on in audio
 games now!

As I said, rail racer and sound rts were deffinately other games I
 considdered as well.

So, the purpose wasn't really to review the games for people to go out and
buy them but to say hay look! audio games can be engaging too!

 Beware the grue!

 Dark.

Hello Angel,
Yes, there are. Right off the top of my head there is a free chess
game that uses Sapi produced by Spoonbill Games. In fact I have a copy
on my game server in the downloads directory. The direct link to the
