We are in the process of switching the Monopoly code to comply with a

Re: [Audyssey] sfml and cross-platform game

2010-07-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Travis,
Thanks. I'll give it a try. If given a choice I'd rather use SFML over
SDL for OpenAL support alone. However, I've been playing with the
latest SFML build for Linux here and the keyboard input is much better
than SDL. The event handling for keyboard events is much more like
what I am use to from DirectInput, and is very smooth and natural.
With SDL it only accepts a single key pressed or key released event
which means if you have to hold an arrow key down to walk, run, etc
you have to use some sort of boolean flag to tell the application that
the key is being held down or if it has been released. That's not too
cool, but is an easy enough problem to solve with a little extra
coding. With SFML though the way the event system is setup you can
test if the key is being held down and take the proper action without
having to take the extra step of writing a separate keyboard handler
to determine if the key is being held down for a certain period of
time.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] sfml and cross-platform game

2010-07-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Travis,
Cool. I'd be interested to know what you find out on the SFML dev
forums. SFML is a pretty decent API all things considered as it wraps
OpenGL, OpenAL, and some other Mac and Linux higher end gaming
libraries, but the way in which it was done I think certainly could be
improved upon. So any information you find out about this would be
helpful.
As far as giving potential developers more than one option I think you
and I are in full agreement on this. Although, you use Mac OS an I am
using Linux we both want to see more games developed for those
platforms, and to show potential game developers that there are
reasonable alternatives to DirectX and Windows for gaming. As you
pointed out Linux users have SDL installed by default, and there are
libraries for just about any programming language you can think of
including C, C++, C#, Java, Python, Perl, you name it. From what I've
seen on the SFML web site it looks like they also are getting a lot of
help supporting .Net, Python, etc as well. So these APIs are
definitely are growing in terms of end user support, use by game
developers, and best of all support more than one platform allowing
you or I to create a game that can be recompiled on any platform with
only miner changes here and there. So showing potential developers
these different APIs, and how to use them is essential for growth of
Mac and Linux accessible games.
So I guess this weekend or so I'll sit down and create a simple game
like Chopper Patrol, or something similar. I think the Chopper Patrol
game itself is getting a bit old. Maybe I should create a game where
you shoot down spaceships or something, but with the same game
mechanics etc as Chopper Patrol. Although, we have all seen more than
our share of Space Invader clones to last a lifetime.

Smile.

Re: [Audyssey] Trouble with saving and loading with mystery of the ancients

2010-07-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Xiao,
Mysteries of the Ancients does not need the Visual Basic 6 runtime as
it is not written in Visual Basic, but it is a good idea to have the
latest Visual C++ runtime libraries for Windows XP if you do not have
them installed already. The Visual C++ runtime is basically just a
collection of newer dll files that ship with the Visual Studio
development tools from Microsoft and will update the ones on XP.
Upgrading to the latest dll runtime libraries will improve stability
in any application that has been written in Visual C++ 2008 and later
as well as insure compatibility with newer apps written for Windows 7
etc.
As far as saving and loading games that feature is disabled in the
demo. There are a couple of technical reasons why I did this, but the
main one is that as I update the save game files fairly regularly they
are absolutely version specific. So if you have beta 13 and in the
future upgrade to beta 14 the beta 13 save game files would crash the
game if you tried to load them in beta 14. To avoid getting an endless
stream of bug reports from people who don't know any better I just
took that feature out of the demo.
As for your issue with the control key it is a bug in beta 13 and has
to do with laptops that only have one control key. If you had a full
sized keyboard and could use say the right control with the letter t
you would not get that bug. However, I suspect you have a laptop with
only the left control key and are using that with the letter t and
therefore are seeing that particular bug. I've fixed the bug in beta
14, but it isn't quite ready for release as I have been focusing on
the fps version for the time being.

Re: [Audyssey] sfml and cross-platform game

2010-07-28 Thread Travis Siegel

On Jul 27, 2010, at 8:14 PM, Thomas Ward wrote:

Hi travis,
Hmmm...That's what I was afraid of. Back during the winter when I was
thinking about a cross-platform engine I tried both SFML and SDL
extensively and was able to do what you did witht the sound objects by
using the sf::Sound::SetBuffer() function to reassign buffers. As you
pointed out it solves the problem of reassigning a sound object to a
new sound buffer, but it waistes a lot of memory in the process. Even
worse this kind of creating a buffer without the ability to destroy it
when you are done with it can lead to a major memory leak in your
program.

I just asked on the sfml forums, and I'm guessing the developer of sfml doesn't
use english as his first language, (though he does speak it quite well) my
first attempt met with confusion, pointing me to the sounds instead of their
buffers. Further clarification lead to the answer you wanted.
Apparently, you can clear a buffer (if you want to use it later) simply by
assigning it an empty resource.
I.E.
buffer = SoundBuffer();
This will reassign the buffer to null, thereby allowing the memory to be used
for other things.
If you allocate the buffer using new, you could also free it (permanently) by
using delete.
I didn't set mine up that way in the chopper patrol port, so teh new/delete
wouldn't work, but the reassigning buffers to empty values does seem to do the
trick though.
Hope this helps.

Hello everyone,
I recently tried Mystery of the ancients beta 13 and is not able to save
or load a game with f3 and f4 respectively. I'm using windows xp and
Didn't know if I was supposed to install the visual basic runtime since it
says for windows vista and windows 7. Also, when I press control t to
check remaining torches, it will tell me how many are left, but it will
also light a torch at the same time. Is this normal? Thank you for any
help.

Fine suggestions, one the first one though, I would make the random
picking of a race lane up weighted.
This given the better drivers more chance to be higher in the line ups.
The game should take in effect that there better computer drivers.
Then the judgment of how the gamer does would get a grade level, say A,
B and C.
Then when the line up is done. A rated drivers get a better shot up
front in the line up and where the C rated drivers have some shot at
sitting on the pole, but not a great one.

Dropping in my note about getting Stock Car Racing accessible.
Been a lot of work and fun.
The external of the menus and viewing things like schedules and points
is completed.

Working on the internal parts now. Like the Cars are being put on the
track and able to select one of the drivers from the past. Smiles, I
think that is cool to select driver Richard Petty or Ricky Rudd.

the hardest part is that the game has a system that no Dos game of its
time had.
The game was created by students in Indiana.
Where by, they design a system to show the cars on a segment of the
track. The cars only being icons, little squares that moved inside a grid.
It's this moving, that makes it hard to program Jaws for..

And speaking of finding the drivers around you.

AS pressing a certain key would be the way I will be using.
For Tom's Race Way, if the Well is introduced in the game, the less you
want to be banging on the keyboard.
This is why, I suggest a play by play system.
This could come by 2 speaking persons. The track announcer or your Pit
chief.
The PBP would be a time schedule event.
When say going down the front stretch , the track announcer would be
heard. This would give the gamer info of where he is on the track. Since
many tracks are going to be oval and the track announcer would be
speaking all the time, but you as a driver would only hear it at the
moment when you are on the front stretch. So, this would be a schedule
speaking event in the race.
For the Pit Chief, could be random but also during certain import times
for warnings , like fuel and tires. Also, when the car is not handling
well or engine problems.
The speeds like Race speed would be the announcer job with saying top 10
and the 4 drivers near the gamers' car, the 2 in front and the 2 in back
or on the side.
With this info the number of laps down or being on the same lap as the
leader. And I could use Car lengths rather then by seconds.
Then the Pit Chief could saying your gaining or falling back to the cars
ahead when the car lengths change.
And lastly, the Pit Chief also could help in knowing your position on
the track.
Using a sound schema, where by your Pit chief would be heard on the left
side and the announcer would be heard on the right. The game should have
a way to either making this option having them in Monnow or switching
the 2 pbp around. The announcer would then be heard from the infield
rather then the stands speakers and those with hearing problem may find
having the Pit chief heard better in their better ear.
But if not in Monnow , the voice coming toward would be heard and get
loader, then fade away for the announcer. But for the Pit Chief would
never fade away completely for long messages. For short broadcasts the
volume can be adjusted to the point on the track.
Smiles, and for Tom's game when you have made enough cash, you could by a
Satellite radio, that would have a GNs that not only have better sound
for your Pit Chief but a tracking position with a third voice say a lady
voice. letting you know you are coming to a turn.
Then again, though in that random event of communication breakdown and
you do have to drive blind.
Smiles, and the only thing you can get is the fourth voice of the driver
himself reading the pit sign messages.

These are just my thoughts and ideas for keeping the gamer more hands
free with using a wheel or even using less of the keyboard for those who
don't have a Wheel.
The Driver's skill level and how to position cars in the line up.

While I feel that Race Way can be a on going upgrading type of game,
things like mentioned above and be added on later.
Even if the game comes out with say four tracks in version 1, I be happy
with that. A Trioval, Super oval, and small tracks. A road course would
be a nice version upgrade to the game while additional tracks are
introduced.
I think even Charlie would agree. Just to help the game development to
be shorten to finally see Race Way under tom. The first set of tracks
can be used for different events and locatio

If you have the opertunity, try swordplay. That is a game you can play
as either one or two players. I know I've already mentioned it, but it
really is fairly easy to master. My highest mii on swordplay is up to
about 1410 or so in scoring. To give some perspective, I have a
sighted friend, trained in swordplay, with scores around 1500. It's

Table tennis is pretty easy too. You'll mess up sometimes, but it's

Realistically, the only games we'll have trouble with are the air

well tf was ok but I'd never buy it.
I ran a full version on a friend's system.
one room in the ocean level did not go well with sonar and I got crashes

I don't care for the fact you have to keep going back and forth to
recharge the suit I also don't think all the audio cues are that good.
I think this game really needs redoing maybe with bgt or the gma engine
or just in pure c++ or genisus or something if they want to keep the
graphics in.

right now though I wouldn't run it for anything much.
It also needs more exp levels and enemies and the ability to shoot them.
also having weapons and amo at only one location is nutty I know thats
the way it is in sighted games but really I'd like picking up kits and
packs of med kits and amo like in sod and getting other powerups and such

I think the compas is a piece of hmmm shite really I think the way we

I think the inventory backpack is a bit stupid to, in the way stuff is

tab also that it exits once you have things you need.
There are like 3 keys in the game that lead to no locks so what is with

One reason why i reguard the game as so easy is that each zone is layed
out precisely the same way, like a doughnut with a computer station at
the north and south end and a computer part at the east and west, with
some kind of challenge which is repeated so that you get it whether you
go round clock wise or anticlockwise. Thus, there is a set of three tone
wheels before the glass bridge on the west side, and another set
afterwards on the north west edge before you get to the north end of the
mines, check your coordinates and room descriptions and you'll see
what I mean.

I did rather hope that the people at pin interactive would use the game
engine to have someting more complex and mazelike, which felt less of a
demonstration and more of a game. They did say they were working on a
new business model, but that was in 2008, so what may be happening

Re: [Audyssey] WII Bowling

2010-07-28 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi Charles,

I always start my first ball where the game starts me, so don't need help
there. But then if they don't tell me, I ask which pins I have left.
Apparently the numbers of the pins left are shown on the screen. I also like
to chat it up. You know like ask what pins they have left, how they or I
missed or made the spare etc.

Last night definitely would not have made a good podcast though. We do chat,
flirt etc while playing. And there was a tenant there last night that rambled
on and on the entire time that she was there. Very distracting. Joe was
telling her to shut up, cursing at her etc. That never stops her though. But
hey she is the only tenant that has lived here since the building opened in
1982.

I will definitely do a recording the next time I can get someone to play and
help me in my apartment.

Hi Dakotah,

Thank you. I have heard that those games are very fun. I will check them out
when I can have someone to help me get to them etc.

My Aid says that her kids yell at her all the time when she plays sword play and
boxing. She keeps moving in on them or the TV screen. She must be really into it.
Hasn't hit them yet, but gets close.

It's
great exercise, too.

Table tennis is pretty easy too. You'll mess up sometimes, but it's
really quite a fun game anyway.

Realistically, the only games we'll have trouble with are the air
sports games and maybe power cruising and archery.

[Audyssey] WII Bowling

2010-07-28 Thread Jim Kitchen

Hi,

Last night Joe and I bowled three games. I bowled a 124, 164 and 163. I won
two of those games. Then Joe, Judy, Terry and I bowled three more games. I
bowled a 153, 171 and 186. I won one of those games. Judy won two of them,
one of them with a 204 with no open frames.

My average last night was a 160.17. So my over all average is now 161.56 with
4362 total points in 27 games, winning 20 of them.

Hi Kevin,

It is loud with other people etc when I play down in our community room, but
when I get someone to help me play in my apartment I will try to record some
game play.

However for me in the WII Bowling it is not really much about the sounds of the
game. Sometimes you can tell if it sounds like a good possible strike or not,
but that is about it. The thing that is fun about it for me is that it is
pretty close to real bowling with the movement and speed of your arm, the crank
of your wrist and when you release the ball that depends on how your ball acts
and where it goes.
