Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-28 Thread dark

Hi Tom.

these shenanigans with microsoft promising one api and replacing it with
another, and an inaccessible one at that sound fairly typical unfortunately.

Personally though as a player, there are so many direct x games out there it
isn't funny, I'll probably need to have direct x on my system for a good
while, heck look at Jim and vb.

This doesn't just apply to audio games though at all. Both of my favourite
freeware graphical Turrican projects are direct x applications.

My personal thought is, so long as a developer will provide me with either
the dependencies themselves or a place I can get them, i really don't mind
downloading other stuff, and in fact I suspect that in three or five years
or so when this desktop goes caputski and I'm forced to switch to a windows
7 machine I'll be needing direct x anyway precisely for that reason.

Hi Dark,

Well, that's true to a point. The fact of the matter is most software
for Windows now days is being developed around the new Microsoft .Net
technologies so .Net is an essential dependency for a lot of new
software anyway. That's why Vista ships with .Net Framework 3.0 and
Windows 7 now ships with .Net 4.0 out of the box. It is now a
preinstalled core component of the operating system. So that in and of
itself doesn't bother me. In say three to five years most of the
Windows XP systems will be most likely beginning to be
updated./replaced by newer, faster, and better 64bit systems running
Windows 7 with at least .Net 4.0. So in the long term sticking with
.Net is on a developers side as the extra dependencies that were such
a pain three or four years ago are going to no longer be an issue
since Microsoft has already made them core components for every
Windows Vista and Windows 7 system built over the last three years or
so.

The real big issue I have with the current STFC and Montezuma's
Revenge is the DirectX components I used. Early in 2004 as part of
their DirectX 9 marketing campaign Microsoft unvailed there Managed
DirectX components all designed for .Net 1.1. I like a number of
independant software developers using C# .Net and Visual Basic .Net
migrated quickly to the new API. In 20006 Microsoft was hinting at
Managed DirectX 2.0 to ship with .Net Framework 2.0. It never
appeared. Instead a few days after Windows Vista was released
Microsoft pulled a double wammy on the game developers. They announced
that as of August 2008 Managed DirectX was going to be deprecated and
that there were beginning an all new API called the XNA Framework that
was suppose to work hand in hand with the cross-platform API they were
developing for the XBox 360. Well, when XNA 1.0 hit the scene I
downloaded it expecting to switch games like Monte over to it right
away only to discover it wasn't accessible to a blind developer. You
have to use a program called XAct to create pack files containing
soundbanks which then are loaded into XAudio and played based on the
settings stored in the Soundbank. So if you couldn't see to check the
boxes to loop sounds, to enable 3d positioning, etc you were pretty
much screwed. Which I royally was. Microsoft had dropped the
technology I was using and gave me one that was far less accessible
and I was stuck. At that time SlimDX didn't exist and I wasn't about
to fork over hundreds of dollars to Firelight for FMOD Ex. I might
have been satisfied with Managed DirectX as is, but it turned out it
has a few nasty bugs that Microsoft hadn't fixed and never were going
to fix. So you see in that way my games like STFC and Montezuma's
Revenge were no better off than those being written in VB 6 all
because Microsoft had pulled the rug out from under me by promising
one API and delivering a different one I couldn't use. That's what
prompted my switch to C++.

Of course, things with .Net game development is a bit different now.
Microsoft's idea to cancel Managed DirectX and replace it with XNA
didn't go over with everyone. I can say there were a number of people
on the DirectX mailing list, most of them mainstream companies, who
were up in arms about the surprise API change. All of us were
expecting the release ofMDX 2.0 and Microsoft happily announces XNA
1.0 which meant everybody had to rewrite substantial amount of code to
use it. People were pretty steamed over it. Out of that outrage began
an open source project called SlimDX. It is essentially Managed
DirectX under a new name and written by a core group of open source
developers who wanted to maintain a .Net implamentation of DirectX
that supported DirectSound, DirectMusic, DirectPlay, DirectInput, etc.
In other words everything Microsoft was trashing like yesterdays
garbage in favor of the XNA libraries.

Then, about that time were other open source developers who wanted to
replace MDX

This is actually why i tend to keep hal running even when having Sapi read
screens in winfrotz tts, so that words like Qo'nos are indeed readable with
virtual focus.

I will say though as someone who needs to use sapi support a lot in games
which either don't print text to the screen for Hal to read or where such
reading would interfere with the game (eg in a mud), I don't find it too
much trouble.

In fact vip mud has a very nice answer to the spelling problem in terms of
it's find and review keys precisely so that you can check spellings and grab
words from the output window to use in commands and I've used the keys very
efficiently with sapi.

Hi Thomas,

Right if you are playing a text adventure game with some text adventure tool
kit engine, but if you are writing a game yourself you can build in all of the
sapi5 speech review that one would need. Like spelling out names, places,
things etc etc like Qo'nos for example. It just takes building in any review

Hi Jack,

I don't know who or what your sources are, but they are way off. Jedi
Quest is a dead project. The lead developer for LightTech up and quit
several months back, and although their website is up they are
effectively out of business. So please stop giving the list false hope
based on out of date information.

As for Super Liam 2 I've already answered that one. Liam is now
working at a real programming job, and all of his game projects are
more or less on hold until such time he has to actually work on them.
No great mystery there why we aren't seeing a lot of new games from
that corner these days. Although, he did manage to produce a new
version of Super Egg Hunt so we should all thank Liam for that upgrade
given his lack of free time these days.

As for Chillingham 2 all I can say is you have more faith in Bavisoft
than I do. As others have said it has been 7 or 8 years since they
have produced anything, and I can say from a programmer's personal
point of view that it shouldn't take that long to produce Chillingham
2. Even giving them a break on the length of time to say it is in
"early development" is a bit of a open ended statement. Are you saying
that they only just started it right now, or did they start it and
forget about it for x number of years and start up again?

You see if I started a project 7 years ago and continued working on it
for an hour or two a day I wouldn't call that "early development" at
all because the product I'd have would be very very safisticated by
now. Although, MOTA is three years old in actuallity most of that time
was spent developing a game engine for developing the future USA Games
titles, and serious development on the game itself has only been over
the last three/four months. So that's less than your 7 or 8 years of
time and I have created something a lot more safisticated than
Chillingham 2 in a lot less time. So I think Bavisoft is just blowing
smoke.

Cheers!

I have to say that this game is quite addictive. I couldn't hear the pit
sound very well, so I did modify that one sound. I yelled, "Look out!
Watch where you're steppin'!" I mixed that yell into the pit sound two
times, one at the beginning and one about five seconds later--but there are
still like ten seconds of wind after, so often I still fall into the pit
only to be told, as I plummet to my death, to watch my step.
Anyway, even with that extra bit of help I find the game rather difficult.
No, I'm not complaining--I love it! I haven't got past level 3, and I
keep dying for some unknown reason I haven't figured out get.

Two improvements I'd like to see:
1. Sometimes, items fall just as you are completing a level, and you're
stuck listening to a high-pitched shriek as you're told your stats.
Stopping all sounds would fix it.
2. An analog jumping system would be killer. It would make things a lot
harder, but it would be worth it.

Thanks, and love the game!

Hi Jack
I am not trying to sound rude or flame or bash you, but if you include the
word please in your messages, the tone of your message might be
experienced

much better by gamers.
You wrote:

You probably just forgot to put the word please.
Please can I have the tdl maze game?
It can leave the impression that you demand the maze game instead of
requesting it.
I'm not saying that your intention is to demand.
I'm just saying that if you include the word please more people will be
willing to help you.
Whereas if you forget to say please, people will be reluctant to help.
Just a bit of friendly advice.
I am busy uploading super shot to send space for people who requested it.
Thereafter, I will upload the maze game from TDL games, to send space.
Like I said previously, I personally find the game buggy, but I understand
if you want to try it out for yourself and see for yourself if there is
any

bugs.

Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Let's make a destinction here. DirectX and Managed DirectX are not the
same thing. Microsoft DirectX, I.E. the DirectX you are talking about,
is already a core component of the Windows operating system. The core
DirectX 8 libraries ship with XP, Vista, and Win 7 by default. Managed
DirectX, MDX, was a very specific version of DirectX written and
created exclusively for .Net development with languages like C#.net
and VB.net. It could not be used by any other languages. So a game
like Turrican definitely does not use Managed DirectX, but core
DirectX 8. Does that make sense?

Anyway, When MDX was initially created word was that it was going to
become a core component of Windows Vista, but as I and everyone else
soon found out it didn't happen. It was pulled from the Win Vista
betas and was not included in the Vista final release. The only way to
get it was to install the full DirectX 9.0C runtime which of course
was like a 300 MB download. I personally felt lied to, and I don't
think my customers should have to install that particular component
when there are better alternatives available to them. More over at
this point I'm so absolutely disgusted with Microsoft's business
practices I'd like to distance myself from their APIs etc as much as
possible on principle. They treat both their customers and third-party
developers like crap. You know the saying, "once bitten twice shy,"
that's me in a nutshell. I don't trust Microsoft when it comes to
technology changes because I believe they pulled this stunt once
they'll do it again.

Cheers!

aren't my favorites. They are some of there lower quality sounding

[Audyssey] Pontes Backgammon

2011-03-28 Thread Karl Belanger
Hi all,

A new Backgammon game has just been released. It was written using GT and is
playable both online and offline. The game costs 13 euros which equals to
about $18. There is also a demo available which allows unrestricted play for
a period of time then stops the game after four pieces have been removed.

The game's web site is:

http://www.backgammon.pontes.ro

And you can discuss it at:

2011-03-28 Thread Bryan Peterson
Exactly. Personal difficulties or not if you don't have the common courtesy
to atleast let people know tat someting's been happening to prevent you from
focusing on the hobby! of accessible game development you're going to lose
people's faith. I myself am having marrital problems and in fact it's
probably safe to say that the marriage is over. That's why I haven't been
focusing on the game I'm working on with BGT. Not that I've been keeping up
a blog on the development progress but still. Bavisoft has lost all their
credibility because of their secrecy. It's almost as if they were engaged in
some shameful activity that they didn't want others to know about. And by
that I obviously mean the development of audio games. Even Draconis,
secretive though they are (or perhaps just close would be a better word),
still keep us at least generally up to date on the fact that they are still
operating.

[Audyssey] RSGames Client

2011-03-28 Thread Damien Pendleton
Hey guys,
I sent this email a few days ago and got no response. I didn't even get a copy
of it myself and I have been having problems with my mailbox, so I'm not even
sure if it came through on your end.
I am having a couple problems with the RSGames Client when accessing some
property related menus in Monopoly.
The problem mainly occurs when I can't afford a property and it asks me to
manage my assets to pay off the owed money. When I mortgage my properties it
says invalid choice and the menus start nesting each other. I have tried doing
an admin chat and have also attempted to contact Ryan via both email and MSN
and have received no response.
Sometimes the menus will say invalid choice even when I am manually going into
the management menus.
Also a couple of minor bugs in that the client is saying invalid choice after
sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly board sometimes switches
between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I wasn't missing
any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in mind this has now been
going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server or a client
issue?
Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

I'm not saying that your intention is to demand.
I'm just saying that if you include the word please more people will be

Cheers!

On 3/28/11, dark wrote:

Hi Tom.

these shenanigans with microsoft promising one api and replacing it with
another, and an inaccessible one at that sound fairly typical
unfortunately.

Personally though as a player, there are so many direct x games out there
it

isn't funny, I'll probably need to have direct x on my system for a good
while, heck look at Jim and vb.

This doesn't just apply to audio games though at all. Both of my
favourite

freeware graphical Turrican projects are direct x applications.

My personal thought is, so long as a developer will provide me with
either
the dependencies themselves or a place I can get them, i really don't
mind
downloading other stuff, and in fact I suspect that in three or five
years
or so when this desktop goes caputski and I'm forced to switch to a
windows

7 machine I'll be needing direct x anyway precisely for that reason.

Beware the Grue!

Dark.

Re: [Audyssey] old games was, shell shock

2011-03-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Dark,

Smile. I figured that's what happened. When a developer specifically
says Managed DirectX most gamers naturally assume they are talking
about the DirectX libraries that ship with Windows. I.E. the core
DirectX libraries that most games generally use. For whatever reason
Microsoft never made it clear to the general public that they actually
have or had two different DirectX APIs available. So when a developer
such as myself lists you need Managed DirectX for STFC, Montezuma's
Revenge, etc people automatically assume they have it installed since
DirectX comes with Windows. When the game doesn't work USA Games gets
asked why it isn't working and they say I have DirectX 8, 9.0C, etc,
.Net Framework x, etc and most of them don't have a clue that DirectX
and Managed DirectX are two totally different things. When I tell them
they have to grab the web installer and have it install the MDX
components I generally have to explain to them that Managed DirectX
and DirectX aren't the same thing. As a developer it just gets to be a
hastle repeatedly explaining the same thing over and over again to a
customer base, because they just don't know that DirectX and Managed
DirectX aren't the same thing.

Which brings me right back to why I'd like to get the original STFC
off my website in the first place. The Managed DirectX API is
deprecated, gone, ancient history, and to make matters worse there are
still people who haven't a clue what it is or was. You mention DirectX
or Managed DirectX they just assume you are talking about one and the
same thing. As a developer who does his own tech support I'd like to
be able to simply dispose of Managed DirectX, get it out of the
picture, and adopt something most people can recognize as A, different
from DirectX, or B, just use DirectX so people won't have to ffool
with installing extra components.

Cheers!

Yeah, those Dos pcs games kicked butt. Maybe they are primative compared
to some of the stuff that's out now, but nothing compares to, for example
the junkyard. I used to spend hours on that range, just waiting to see if
I couldn't blow up that propane tank. Cops was fun too, as well as Snipe
Hunt.

I so totally agree with you dark. This is sort of how I feel with the PCS
dos games which I successfully gotten the demos of to work under windows
with nvda in the command prompt, but you can't get the full versions
anymore. Very sad indeed since those are quite a major thing in the
audiogame history imho.

While I appreciate from a programmers point of view that you want the
latest and best version of something available and don't want your old
work kicking around, as a player it always strikes me as A, slightly
sad, and B, a litle pointless when a game is taken down especially when
it had some merrit.

I have to say that this game is quite addictive. I couldn't hear the pit
sound very well, so I did modify that one sound. I yelled, "Look out!
Watch where you're steppin'!" I mixed that yell into the pit sound two
times, one at the beginning and one about five seconds later--but there
are still like ten seconds of wind after, so often I still fall into the
pit only to be told, as I plummet to my death, to watch my step.
Anyway, even with that extra bit of help I find the game rather
difficult. No, I'm not complaining--I love it! I haven't got past level
3, and I keep dying for some unknown reason I haven't figured out get.

Hi Jack
I am not trying to sound rude or flame or bash you, but if you include
the
word please in your messages, the tone of your message might be
experienced

much better by gamers.

Like I said previously, I personally find the game buggy, but I
understand
if you want to try it out for yourself and see for yourself if there is
any

bugs.

Hey guys,
I sent this email a few days ago and got no response. I didn't even get a
copy of it myself and I have been having problems with my mailbox, so I'm
not even sure if it came through on your end.
I am having a couple problems with the RSGames Client when accessing some
property related menus in Monopoly.
The problem mainly occurs when I can't afford a property and it asks me to
manage my assets to pay off the owed money. When I mortgage my properties
it says invalid choice and the menus start nesting each other. I have
tried doing an admin chat and have also attempted to contact Ryan via both
email and MSN and have received no response.
Sometimes the menus will say invalid choice even when I am manually going
into the management menus.
Also a couple of minor bugs in that the client is saying invalid choice
after sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly board
sometimes switches between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I wasn't
missing any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in mind this has
now been going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server or a
client issue?

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

[Audyssey] X-Sight Games - Re: RSGames Client

2011-03-28 Thread Damien Pendleton

Hi Shane,
I regret to inform you that the Chopper Challenge game is no longer
supported. When we had a few coders over at X-Sight, the code wasn't being
synchronised and managed in a controlled manner, causing bugs to crop up
here and there where we thought they had previously been fixed. As a result,
the coding for Chopper Challenge was more or less completed by one guy with
very little input from me. Now he has left I am left with a very buggy
source code which I find I can't fix because it is very messy and not
commented. Even the segments of code which were mine I was very shocked upon
reading it and trying to wade my way through it. This was a project back
from the mid 2000's, and I thought it was a bit past its time.
If there is popular demand for it then I may consider rewriting it. However,
for now, consider Chopper Challenge abandonware.
I think now is a good time to say that, unfortunately, Acefire will end up
the same way, for the same reasons. For the sort of games I am working on
currently, Acefire now seems like a very basic project, almost a beginner's
work. A few concepts here and there that made it look advanced, but again,
the code is very messy and I have had several bugs reported to me that I
cannot find their source.
I am currently working on a title which should hopefully keep you on the
edge of your seats clinging on for dear life, that's all I'll say for now.
Watch out for trailers and other snippets as the game becomes more formed.
Also I am working on updating River Raiders, so if you have any suggestions,
now's the time to book them through. Grin.

If anyone has any questions, you all know where to find me.
Lastly, for anyone who doesn't yet know. I've set up a discussion forum at
X-Sight where you can discuss things. I'll be posting updates and content on
there and I'll be taking my blog down soon. It is much easier to interact
with a community base through a forum than a blog, in my opinion.

Regards,
Damien.

after sounds have downloaded, and also the British monopoly board
sometimes switches between pounds and dollars.
I redownloaded the client about a week ago just to make sure I wasn't
missing any updates, and it was still happening. Bearing in mind this
has now been going on since the end of last year.
Is there a fix for this or is it being worked on? Is it a server or a
client issue?

Thanks.
Regards,
Damien.

[Audyssey] Important Moderator Announcement

2011-03-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hello list,

On behalf of the list moderators I would like to request that everyone
stop sharing game roms immediately. This is not strictly speaking
completely legal. When it comes down to the issue of game roms and
game emulation it is a huge gray area as far as the law is concerned.
Most companies, and I'm saying most but certainly not all, have a
policy where by a rom can only be shared if, and only if, two basic
requirements are met. One, the person owns the original game media
such as disc, cartrage, etc. Two, if the person physically owns the
original console the game was intended for. If these two requirements
are not met sharing the rom in question is an act of software piracy.
As it is hard to tell who is legally able to download the rom or not
undoubtedly a certain amount of illegal software piracy will transpire
by sharing this content on list. Since we actively discurrage all
forms of software piracy on Audyssey we can not, and will not, allow
you to share the roms here on list.

So to clarify what you can and can not share here its fine to share
the game emulators themselves. Most of these like Snes9x etc are open
source emulators so are intended to be freely and openly shared
anyway. Giving people suggestions what websites to visit is probably
ok as it is up to the person to choose weather he/she is going to
download a rom for a game they actually own or not. However, bundling
up a bunch of game roms, slapping them on Dropbox for mass download,
etc isn't strictly the most legal thing to do since you have no idea
who is legally allowed to download those roms or not. Plus some of the
games for the PSX, for example, can usually be purchased online for a
small amount of cash and played on a PSX or PS2 console. If you are
sharing a pirated rom chances are most of the people playing it via an
emulator is doing so for piracy reasons rather than legal backup or
emulation reasons. Its just one of those cases of knowing people are
pirating the game, but can't prove it without turning it over to the
legal authorities in your country. Something none of us wants to
happen right?

So, please, let's all just stop sharing the game roms etc. Some of you
may be legally sharing them among yourselves, and I'm certain some of
you don't own the games inquestion and are downloading the roms for
the soul purpose of pirating them illegally. The best thing to do is
take the rom sharing and game pirating elsewhere.

Thanks.

Sincerely,
Thomas Ward

2011-03-28 Thread Sky Mundell
Hello Shane, three suggestions. One: in the installation dialogs, when you
install the game, could you add an option to install the game in a different
folder? That would be helpful as I am running windows 7 and I have all my
games on c:\users\user name\games\company\the name of the game
User name being mine, games is the folder, the company of the game, and the
game name. Second, when you play the game, could you create a .exe file that
will let us play the game without having to download the BGT program? And
third, when you are in the game, could you put warming sounds before you
fall into pits? For example in Super liam when you were about to fall into a
hazerd you would get two warming sounds. Thanks for developing the game, it
is awesome so far!

Re: [Audyssey] battle zone

2011-03-28 Thread NIcol
Hi Sky
IN the meantime, I can answer one of your questions:
For a game developer to be able to compile the game into a .exe file, he
needs at least bgt light.
So the reason why you need bgt to play battle zone is most likely because
shane cannot afford bgt light at this stage.
The bgt demo cannot compile executables.
I haven't played battle zone yet, but it seems easy to play battle zone
although its not an executable due to the fact that bgt is so small.
So I don't think there is any hassles that a .exe file does not have. hth

Re: [Audyssey] new psx game uploaded and v 1.0 of emulatorstomorrow!

2011-03-28 Thread dark

Hi Nicol.

An emulator is a program designed to pretend to be another piece of hardware
running on your pc.

If you wanted for instance, you could run a comador 64 computer emulator and
use it's word processer function.

However, obviously the thing people most want to do with emulators is
emulate games consoles or computer systems of the past and run games.

Thus, when running correctly, an emulator gets you precisely the same as
you'd get if you physically had a nes, snes, ps1 or whatever.

They thus don't specifically help with access, sinse unfortunately it's not
possible to read the graphically emulated text with your pc screen reader
(if it was that would be awsome, but sadly no).

So, emulators are basically just another way of playing mainstream games,
and one which, as Tom says is of dubious legality.

I personally haven't run that many emulators, simply because I prefer to
play games on original consoles and sinse I have a perfectly working Snes
gamecube and Mega drive there really is no need for me to.

beware the grue!

Dark.

emulatorstomorrow!

Hi Mathias
I am not so clued up with mainstream games and emulators so here is a
question from a newbee.
Are emulators programs that can make mainstream pc games more accessible?
I mean, if I legally buy a mainstream pc game such as Mario, is the
emulators you uploaded, there to make them more accessible?
Many thanks for any info.

2011-03-28 Thread NIcol
As for scc, firstly I do not know where you can get it legally.
And secondly, it has been mentioned here before that distributing scc is
illegal. hth

Subject: [Audyssey] light battles

Hi Shane,
Due to serious technical difficulties, light battles development has
stopped. How ever, lighttech is working on a better starwoars project
gd quest. I don't know when it will be released but it's still in
development. I don't know about super liam2. I'll ask Liam about it
but I don't think it's abandoned. Anyone wanting to know about
chillingham2 the game is still in development. It is still in it's
early days of development, so don't expect the game to come out soon.
Development probably might have been placed on hold, and that might
also be the case for super liam2. Now could anyone send me scc and
maze game?
Thanks.
best regards,
jack
