[Audyssey] I finally did it.
First of all, I have to thank all who helped me with my problems with the Logitech F510 gamepad. Finally thanks to some helpful e-mails from Logitech, I got the right hand stick to increase the speed when pulling the stick forward. For those who own the f510. Is there a way to play with the sinativity of the left hand stick? I ask this because each time I go to pich up for take off I crash and burn my plane. Hi. people on audiogames.net may have seen the topic by a member called Katta, actually Katerina speel, a researcher from germany who is doing a study into how visually impared players navigate in textual games such as muds and interactive fiction. I've just completed the study myself, which was extremely short and easy, and actually quite fun sinse it involved playing a little mini test mud based on the disk world mud with a puzle to do while being in contact with Katta herself via phone or skype, then answering a questionaire. As usual this is a great chance to get blind gamers a bit more recognition, indeed Katta's effort in first coming to audiogames.net with the study was that the study itself would work on the suggestions and comments of actual blind players with different leverls of gaming experience, rather than people assuming! soemthing about blind gamers. As I said, the studdy itself was quick, easy and actually quite a lot of fun too. In particular, Katta is looking for people with less experience of if games or muds, though the more the better. Anyhow I was doing some looking around the app store on my Ipad and found a game called Zombies that made some references to playing with earphones and even trying to play without looking. Well needless to say that piqued my curiosity and I installed it, yes it is free. The good news, yes the game does seem to employ the stereo field for something, if you tap the left or right sides of your screen while at the game's main menu it makes a growling sound in your left or right ear respectively. The bad news, I haven't been able to figure out much beyond this, the buttons are not very well labeled and like many of these apps directions are minimal. I will continue to play with it though. Re: [Audyssey] Mary anne's Slot machines question
Hi Dark, Yeah, I understand that. My basic point was that here in the U.S. gambling casinos are generally casual affairs. Therefore people dress pretty casually. If you walk into a casino dressed to the nines in a tux, tie, and so on people are going to wonder why you aren't dressed casually like them. You would be probably identified as a snob weather you were one or not. That's assuming you went to a standard casino. However, there are some hotels that only have extremely wealthy clients and therefore their casinos probably have a dress code with women in their evening gowns and guys in their tuxes. My guess is given the kind of clients we are talking about gambling for a few hundred is peanuts to them. Try gambling thousands or millions away at a single game. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Mary anne's Slot machines question
Hi Tom. I personally have a real hatred of nightclubs. Going to a place where the music is too loud to actually speak (and usually out of tune), and where the only activity is jiggling up and down in an embarrassing manner just doesn't interest me in the least. In fact sinse I feel an utter idiot and am extremely self contious if I ever try dancing, on the few ocasions I've been to such places I've ended up sitting on my own in a corner feeling pretty miserable, unable to talk to anyone while the music gives me a headache. I can accept that some people enjoy dancing and some don't, but for me that's just not condusive to a good time, I'd rather have a vaguely interesting chat with someone and a drink. Indeed, at the moment if I go out for the night with friends we always end up at someone's house sinse there are literally no bars where you can just sit, have a chat and a drink. An actual concert is a different thing, and I'd go to that just for the music, though most of the stuff I've seen tends to be orchestral or tends to be a rather off the wall band as opposed to just someone playing standard rock. Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Jeopardy?
Hi Tom. Actually my point here was more about music, particularly "classical" music (though I prefer the term orchestral music myself), is presented to people. A lot of classical musicians are extremely unpleasant and exclusivist, and reffuse to acknolidge that orchestral music is used in other contexts, or can be enjoyed for it's emotive quality. yet all the Orchestral stuff I enjoy is from the romantic, not classical period, the point when emotion, melody, and all the things known in modern film score were first coming into practice. I'm therefore fairly certain that someone who liked john williams, james horner or John turner, would be pretty likely to enjoy similar themes, styles and expression in Stravinski, Holst or rimski korsikov. However most people don't tend to think like this, sinse most people, yourself included it would seem, put "classical" music into one box, and say "I don't like that" and put film or indeed game score into an utterly different box. I was very pleased for instance that in the recent Uk classic fm charts, an orchestral arrangement of Airis' theme from final fantasy 7, arranged by the conductor Arny roth, actually came 14th in their yearly hall of fame, a set of 300 peaces chosen by people's votes each year. The problem however is that lots of orchestral music is presented extremely badly, by people with absolutely no idea how to talk to an audience who would rather be exclusive about what they do and have fewer people involved, than aknolidge that they work in the same genre as John williams and the like. [Audyssey] Playing World War from Storm8
Hello Ian, this is probably one of the few inaccessible parts of World War from Storm8. I had to turn off Voice Over and tap the continue button in order to get past that part. It's been several months since I started this game though, and so I don't remember where that button is located. Perhaps sighted assistance is needed. However once you get past that and choose which country you want to be a part of, it's easy going in terms of accessibility. Right now in World War I'm at level 10, but that's because I've been spending these last few months building up income for higher levels. With Storm8 games I don't like to level up too quickly when first starting because I like to build up an income base. I knew the answer was Asimov, and I yelled out just "Asimov" as the contestant was saying "Who was Asimov?" So after I answered the question I could clearly hear the contestant answer it too, as he had to add the additional "who was" words to the beginning. If he had only to answer Asimov, I might not have heard him clearly as I was saying the same thing. So the question format was a form of delay, and I was able to answer most of the questions I knew just before the contestant did. Phil ** Scanned by MailScan AntiVirus and Content Security Software. Re: [Audyssey] Mary anne's Slot machines question
Hi Dark, That must be a cultural thing I suppose, but modern Americans like myself like night clubs where people dress in every day clothing and drink alcohol while the radio or stage band plays rock and roll all night. Although, not gambling per say I can remember when I was still in college and my friends and I would hang out at some of the college bars around town. We would dance, scarf down pizza and cheese burgers, while the jukebox played Alanis Morissette, Pearl Jam, Kid Rock, and other hard rock music at nearly ear splitting intensity. While I didn't enjoy the volume of the music so much I still enjoyed the ambiance and experience of partying in those college night clubs, and as a big fan of rock I liked the music as well as the beer and cheese burgers. There was something exciting about taking a twenty-something college babe out onto the dance floor while AC-DC belted out "You Shook Me All Night Long" on the jukebox at ear splitting volume. I guess I see gambling casinos in much the same way. I go there to have fun and enjoy myself. Not to dress up like a rich snob and swill fine wine and listen to classical music. Give me my cold beer and cheese burgers, t-shirt and jeans, and loud rock music and I'll be happy. :D On 5/28/2012 1:25 PM, dark wrote:I suppose I just like wearing my tux :D. Re: [Audyssey] Mary anne's Slot machines question
Hi Dark, Ug...No offense, but going to a casino with a dress code is for total snobs. The people who dress up in suits, tuxes, etc are usually rich snobs who look down on everyone else as peons. Not saying you are a snob, but if you walk into a casino here in the U.S. in a suit or tux people are going to label you as a snob because the way you are dressed, and you will stick out like a sore thumb. The casinos I've been to are the working class casinos where pretty much everyone dresses up in a t-shirt and blue jeans. A guy walking into one of those casinos dressed up in a tux acting like James Bond is going to be an outcast, because people will assume you are rich or a poor snob trying to act rich. In either case not your kind of joint. :D Of course, I have heard of some casinos with that kind of dress code, but they also tend to attract bankers, wealthy businessmen, lawyers, etc. People with serious amounts of money which I doubt you or I could afford to bet against. James Bond was intentionally set in that kind of Casino simply because wealthy criminals liked to hang around people of status rather than the working class people. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Accessible Jeopardy?
Hi Dark, Well, that is an interesting point about film scores, but part of the issue here is artist vs the genre of music. A person might happily enjoy John Williams but have no interest in Beethoven or Mozart. Does that mean that person really likes classical music? I personally don't think so. Just because a person might like one or two artists of a certain genre of music be it orchestral music from a specific film score doesn't necessarily mean he or she likes all classical music in general. All it merely says is that the person is being very selective of who they like and don't like in that particular genre. For example, let's take rap. Over all, I am not and never have been a very big rap fan. Just never took to that style of music personally. However, I have a few discs from the late 80's and early 90's like Salt and Peppa, M.C. Hammer, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. Those are a few exceptions to the rule, so I guess you could say I like some rap, but in general I don't care for it. On the other hand I would readily agree if you say I like pop and rock since 90% of my music collection is of pop and rock artists of the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Of course, there are some artists I don't like in that genre but I'd say I like far more than I dislike. With rap, classical music, etc its totally the opposite. So in summary I think weather someone likes a certain genre of music must take in account how much a person actually listens to that genre of music compared to others. Cheers! I'm always a little confused when people talk about disliking "classical music" and then will freely listen to the music of Jon williams, james horner, john turner etc. All of that sort of emotive music is based on about 200 years of orchestral tradition. While during the classical period things were very formuleic and rather emotionless, - mostly because the music was essentially just used as background for dinner parties and diplomatic functions, after beathoven, people got the idea that music should actually contain emotion! This lead to what is called the romantic period, which went from the early 19th to mid 20th century, which is probably my favourite period of music. All my favourite composers come from this era, (and interestingly enough most are Russian), and as I said, the romantic era is largely what gave birth to the modern idea of film score. So, i'd say anyone who's ever enjoyed the music to starwars, harry potter or Lord of the rings has enjoyed "classical" (or rather orchestral), music, without actually knowing it, and probably would like a good bit of earlier stuff if they heard it. Part of the real problem though is that a lot of music is presented extremely badly and exclusively, by people who are very cleaque orientated. This goes even more especially for most opera, even in terms of the massive amount of Vibrato a lot of classically trained singers use and the total disregard for emotions or story. If you've ever enjoyed musicals or disney films, you've enjoyed opera, it's just that most "opera" singers don't really think like that, or present things that way to the audience, quite especially if they have such a massive vibrato and can't be heard. I'm currently training as a professional tenor, and this is in fact one thing I really want to do, actually talk! to an audience, and do stuff that really ranges in genre from full classic opera to disney, with equal attentions paid to the words and story of each. What I've really found in music myself is that I appreciate individuality, musicality and ability, which can really range betwene different genres. I've got a music collection that goes from a bit of classic rock like the beatles, through progressive rock and acoustic such as pink floyde and Leonard cohen, right to electronica, musicals opera, and a lot of orchestral stuff. The one thing I can't bare however is music that is just is qualatitively bad, in terms of it's musical range, style, and uniqueness. A lot of boy and girl bands for instance have a range of only a fifth, lyrics that make little to no sense, even using electronics to make sure they hit the right notes, - this is why I largely ignore pop music these days, albeit that in the past there have been a lot of very talented popular musicians or composers, Eltan John, Paum mccartney, phil colins (though I rather dislike his voice), even Queen (as I said, wide musical taste). I do admit though I am something of a perfectionist where correct notes are concerned, sinse anything that is off key causes me a physical headache. Bob dillen for instance, however much I appreciate his guitar playing and lyrics, I can't bare hearing him sing, sinse it physically causes me actual pain given how off key he is. Beware the Grue! Hi Jim, No. Fuzzy logic is a special technique used by computer scientists for artificial intelligence. Its far more complicated than simply converting strings to the same case and then comparing them. Most languages I know of have string comparing functions such as the ones you mentioned, and it doesn't use fuzzy logic to do. :D Cheers! Of course there would still be the spelling and phrasing of the question. Would comparing strings to see if they match for the most part be called fuzzy logic? Hi Jim, I was more or less talking about how passing would work in an electronic version of Jeopardy. Obviously, if we are talking about the game show itself there is no passing since if a person doesn't know an answer they don't have to buzz in. However, if we are talking about an electronic or computer version we might have to add a pass feature. Cheers!
