[Audyssey] Shades of doom audio review.
Hello gamers, today I was feeling bored, so thought I'd record a review of Shades of Doom 1.2 from GMA games, which I'm also going to post on my blog for Sense Scotland, which is a charity I work for in the uk. I thought though I'd like some feedback from the gaming comunity first though, en case there's anything I could do better, or anything you'd like to see included. Hi brian and everyone,, sorry about the buzzing, for some stupid reason we've worked out that it's interfearence from when my laptop is plugged in to the mains, when the plug is out there's no buzzing, but i only get about an hour worth out of my battary at most, so I can't really podcast on battary alone. Hi Lori. Congrats on a great little review, though I found the buzzing really distracting unfortunately, so you might want to look in to why that is happening. Shades of Doom was one of my favourite accessible games back in the day and I do from time to time still play it. I am an avid gamer, I particularly enjoy action/rpg games and also text based interactive fiction, fighting fantasy and some though not all combat and stat building games.. I just listened to your exploration of level 1. At first, I thought that the game was louder than your voice. There is a buzzing sound, probably from your PC?, but I didn't find it all that disruptive. So far, this is a good game review. Thanks for posting it. What program was used to do the recording? How did you get your mike and the game sounds to be recorded together? Hi Charles, I used soundtap audio recorder from NCh Software, sadly you have to pay for it, think it's about $29. Hi Lori, Yes the part I pasted was way down at the bottom of the message rather than at the top. I did run your review through Gold Wave and it almost completely reduced the buzz. But it also distorted your voice. Maybe you could record on battery for an hour until it runs down instead of on aC. A slight correction though. It's a fan, not a lamp in that room on level 1, the one after the room with the opening in the floor. Smile. I actually thought it was saying Van for a while and not Fan. I wasn't sure why there'd be a van inside the base unless it was an evacuation vehicle if the experiment went wrong. I kept trying to figure out how to get in the van and drive away LOL. Also on that room in level two with the two mutant humans with guns (a lot of people call that the Boom Room for obvious reasons), my personal strategy is actually to open the door, toss a grenade in there and then shut the door and let the grenade deal with them. The problem I'm finding with running on battary is if jaws is shut down then I've no idea how long I have before I get the critical warning and it runs down, is there a way to set a sound to play or something? I thought the fan sounded more like the piece of equipment you shouldn't shoot, the one in level 1. Actually there is. If you go to Settings, then Control panel and ten I believe sound, video and other devices, then go over to the sounds tab. There'll be a list of different events and the sounds associated with them if any. You'll see both low and critical battery alarms and can asign whatever sounds you want to them. Just remember to hit Apply after you select each sound. Smile. Hi Lori. Nice recording, personally I didn't find the buz a problem, it was noticeable, but no worse than on some other reviews I've heard. For future reference My only real cryticism is that you might considder giving a little more explanation of the first person perspective, if this review is intended for novices at gaming, particularly considdering that shades is usually one of the best games to get into first person games with, indeed when I've recorded reviews myself in the past I've often found having a vague plan of what I will do and what to say before hand to be useful because I do tend to ramble on! :D. Hi Lori, I didn't notice the buzz after you started the game. In your demonstration, I think it's better to say I rather than you. You say I in most places but not in this section, This passage has alcoves that are open off to the left and right. Sometimes there's monsters hiding here. They like nothing better than than to leap out on you. This time we're fine. There's a border just before you hit a wall. In your initial message you said you worked for Sense Scotland, so I guess my offer to introduce you to text based and RPG titles wasn't exactly what you were looking for? However, having said that I do have vast experience with a lot of audio titles, once I've figured out how to do my own recordings I might well submit my own reviews for games I particularly enjoy. With that in mind, would you mind sharing with us how you recorded your review, I particularly want to be able to record from my PC's sound card yet use my headset's microphone for actually doing the voice over to the game. Well I don't know whether your safe lori, we might have to install some security cameras just to keep track of you :d. Seriously, what I meant by the first person perspective is the way that you here everything in the game from the point of view of the agent himself, can turn a full 360 degrees and aime, and walk whichever way you want. Setting out the movement and the limits of that view where for instance you need to sidestep to hit targits or spin around to hit things behind you culd be a good idea I think, sinse a person who's not played such games before might not get the full overview without some more explanation. To be honest I never minded the pronowns myself, to my mind either is acceptable. I is from the perspective that it is you the reviewer sharing our knolidge about the game, where as if you say you to the audience you are talking directly to them, while we implies both the listener and the reviewer playing and participating in the game. All of which are to my mind quite legitimate ways of speaking, and I've myself used both in reviews before, indeed sometimes I've alternated in pronown use when it seemed appropriate, for instance saying you when I am recommending a course of action to the listener, and using I when I am playing the game and talking about what I'm doing myself in the review. Hello gamers, today I was feeling bored, so thought I'd record a review of Shades of Doom 1.2 from GMA games, which I'm also going to post on my blog for Sense Scotland, which is a charity I work for in the uk. I thought though I'd like some feedback from the gaming comunity first though, en case there's anything I could do better, or anything you'd like to see included. I realise Shades of Doom is quite a well known game now for some, but the people I'm posting this review at Sense Scotland are only just finding out about audio games in general, action games in particular. Well I don't know whether your safe lori, we might have to install some security cameras just to keep track of you :d. Seriously, what I meant by the first person perspective is the way that you here everything in the game from the point of view of the agent himself, can turn a full 360 degrees and aime, and walk whichever way you want. Setting out the movement and the limits of that view where for instance you need to sidestep to hit targits or spin around to hit things behind you culd be a good idea I think, sinse a person who's not played such games before might not get the full overview without some more explanation. Hi Lori. Nice recording, personally I didn't find the buz a problem, it was noticeable, but no worse than on some other reviews I've heard. For future reference My only real cryticism is that you might considder giving a little more explanation of the first person perspective, if this review is intended for novices at gaming, particularly considdering that shades is usually one of the best games to get into first person games with, indeed when I've recorded reviews myself in the past I've often found having a vague plan of what I will do and what to say before hand to be useful because I do tend to ramble on! :D.
