[Audyssey] Quentin's Playroom don't connect. Was: Re: quinton's playroom update?

2013-07-10 Thread Gabriel Battaglia (Kriyaban)

Hi All.
With last version of Playroom client, I'm able to connect from the LAN I work on. This LAN is firewalled and some doors are closed.
What is strange is that since this last update it works smoothly and I just wonderf if they changed the doors wich throw server and
clients exchange data.

Any idea?

The error message I got is: "connection closed before reading first message."

Thanks.
Gabriel.

yes sometimes it does this you just need to get the file it should
appear in your alt n bar automatically.

if it doesn't you need to download it manually I forget how.

Thanks. What seemed odd to me is that when the program took me to wherever
it tried to in order to download the update, the message came up that the

Hi Lisa,

To tell you the truth I never thought that it would be much fun to try to
write a command interpreter for a text to speech game. You know how some
of them are much better than others. But anyway, that is why my version
of a text to speech game, Dungeon Master, is menu driven rather than the
command interpreter thing. Now maybe if I had the source code for one and

2013-07-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Zack,

Perhaps it wasn't intentional, but sometimes it can seem that way when
a command that seems perfectly logical to me doesn't work only to
discover the game expected it to be phrased a different way. I was
never sure if that was intentionally done that way or seems obscure
because the author and I simply don't think the same way.

Cheers!

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts and questions aboutIFgaming:What'syourfavorite Inform game?

2013-07-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

Well, assuming you did get the source code I doubt it would do you
much good. Most interactive fiction games are written in a language
such as Inform, AGT, or Tads, which are pretty different from VB 6.
I'm not even sure you can really call them programming languages as
they are basically just scripts that get compiled into a data file
that gets interpreted by an interpreter program. If you wanted to
rewrite it in say VB 6 you'd basically have to rewrite it from
scratch.

That said, I've been nooddling a few ideas for my own interactive
fiction games and am trying to decide if I want to write a command
interpreter or if I want to have menus like in your Dungeon Master
game. Menus are better in a way, because it takes all the guess work
out of the game and you merely have to select the right command from a
list. At the same time it can be a lot more work, because the bigger
and more complex the game the more items that can and will appear in
your menus which takes more time to develop.

Cheers!

2013-07-10 Thread Zachary Kline
Thomas et al,
I’m not sure i agree with the notion that authors implement guess the verb
puzzles deliberately. Some early games might have done so, as would games
parodying the difficulty and absurdity of those—Scott Adams is a prime example.
In general though, I think that such stuff fell out of favor relatively early
on, and it’s far more likely that authors accidentally failed to account for
reasonable synonyms and syntaxes.
This is one area where beta testers can help, and it’s often worth checking a
suspect game’s credits or about section to see if they are acknowledged.
Outside testers can find weirdness in games the author’s own biases wouldn’t
have seen.
Yours,
Zack.

Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts and questions about IF gaming:What'syourfavorite Inform game?

2013-07-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,

I often think that is intentional on the part of the author to make it
difficult to guess the correct command. Some find such guess the verb
situations as challenging, but I find it just annoying when I know
what I am suppose to do but can not tell the game what to do because
it has to be worded a certain way.

For example, take the game House of the Midnight Sun. There is a pile
of straw behind an old broken down cottage you need to set on fire
with the tinderbox you find in the basement. You can't tell it
specifically to burn straw, light straw, start fire,or anything like
that. Instead you need to get near the straw and do "strike tinderbox"
and that will start the fire. If you examined the underside of the
tinderbox you would know that, but if not you'll drive yourself crazy
trying various commands such as "burn straw" to get the fire started.

I often wish that such games would allow for more than one command to
do the same thing. Alternate phrasing and structure of commands would
go along way to making IF games more entertaining for the casual IF
player. However, a lot of the people who create them now are hardcore
IF players, and enjoy the difficulty of puzzles and obscure commands.
Thus I don't see that issue improving any.

Cheers!

Wow I didn't know that it was one of the better games out there when I
started playing it. Infact I didn't know that till someone had posted the
info on it. but I do have to say that if you are in to horror and mistery
then it will have you playing for hours on end.

Re: [Audyssey] Candy crush saga and song pop

2013-07-10 Thread Piotr Machacz
SongPop is playable. At least, the online FB version is if your screen reader
has decent flash support. The mobile versions are completely unplayable though,
I guess they are using some sort of cross-platform engine to port it which
bypasses iOS's and android's native UI frameworks.

Re: [Audyssey] Text games.

2013-07-10 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Shaun,

You can play AGT games just fine on 64-bit Windows using the Agility
interpreter for Windows. You certainly don't need to have a 16-bit Dos
environment to play AGT games. I recommend you get your facts straight
before spouting off misinformation like this.

Cheers!
