Re: [Audyssey] quinton's playroom update?
well it should auto get like on win7 and xp. Interestingly though after my updates I have found windows in general to be temperimental at startup. no sounds, drop outs to the desktop, in the quentin c case on xp though I got the update loaded windows decided to half crash explorer, start menu did not work and a lot of other things. I restarted and it was ok, however every couple restarts or so its almost like something is a miss and I have to restart again and hope it works. There is no virus and as its like that with my boxes after the updates I can only assume that there are issues with some of the updates. so I guess we will have to see what ms does about it. win7 users may not have these issues but some of them do happen on both oses. I also thought I had backed up the file well a file, but it didn't and well some hardware refused to detect properly till I restart. I have told msse to turn off automatic submition and archive scanning just in case the stupid system is going through and killing files but to be honest I have no idea what else could be going on. Also automatic update tried to install updates that were already loaded so for now I have turned that off at least on my xp box. damn them hackers for making the users life hell! Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts andquestionsaboutIFgaming:What'syourfavorite Inform game?
Hi Jim, Well, you are right that one problem with many text adventures is there is little replay value after the game is completed. Once you solve all the puzzles there is really nothing to solve or figure out, and it is for that reason I don't play text adventures more than once or twice after completing them. There is just nothing there to keep my attention as a more random game would. The only way to increase the replay value in such games is to add more random variations between games such as randomly placing items from game to game, using a system of stats like in roll playing games that very from game to game, and of course randomly generating enemies and other opsticals that are also very random. One game that does this very well is the online RPG Sryth. Although, the various adventures are basically the same from game to game there is still a great deal of randomness between games that makes playing a different experience. Sometimes your stats will be higher or lower, sometimes you will be armed with different weapons, and when you play an adventure often times the enemies will be randomly generated for that adventure meaning you will never encounter the same enemy in the same place twice unless it is something like a boss enemy or some other character that effects the outcome of the story. I am not sure how any of this could improve your Dungeon Master game seeing it is not combat oriented, but I can think of a few ideas where that game could perhaps be improved. One way is by placing the special items in completely random locations making it more difficult to find and collect them. Another is more detailed and random descriptions of people, places, and things in the game that randomly change from game to game. Another is simply allowing the user to do more things with the items they have besides the defaults. Cheers! On 7/11/13, Jim Kitchen wrote: > > Hi Lisa, > > Well, I don't know. Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts and questions about IFgaming:What'syourfavorite Inform game?
Hi Jim, As I said I'm not sure weather it is intentional or some other reason, but the point you made about it being basically impossible to cover every way to type a certain command is one reason I have been strongly thinking of using a menu in any text adventures I write. There are so many ways to phrase the same command at times that it can be confusing how to phrase it for the interpreter. With a menu you simply scroll to or select the most likely command and you are on your way. Plus if the menu commands are bound to certain hot keys like t for take, u for use, x for examine, etc it is obviously quicker than sitting there typing it out word for word. While most Inform interpreters support shortcuts for commands like examine, north, south, east west, drop, etc you still have to type out what it is you want to do with that command like "d item" or "x item" which still is a lot of typing after a while. Perhaps the best reason for a menu is it limits you to the choices that are valid, and you don't spend a lot of unnecessary time spinning your wheels so to speak. What I mean by that is if you are new to a text adventure you have no clue what is and is not important. So you may spend lots of time examining everything such as the walls, floor, shelves, tables, etc only to get a response like "you don't see anything interesting here" which is a waste of time, but necessary because there is nothing to indicate what is and is not important to the game. If you have an examine menu it would most likely only display the items in the room that had any use thus saving time examining unnecessary things. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Thoughts and questionsaboutIFgaming:What'syourfavorite Inform game?
Hi Jim, The command interpreter is actually contained in the Winfrotz program itself. All the z5, z8, and zip files are is data files that instruct the interpreter what items are in the game and where to put them as well as provide text descriptions. I don't recall the Inform syntax exactly, but below is a basic idea of how it works. The Bedroom is a Room. The Bedroom is a medium sized room with white colored walls, brown colored carpet on the floor, a desk and chair are next to the window, and an air bed is in the center of the room. Thomas is a Man. Thomas is in the Bedroom. This would be loaded into Winfrotz and would create a room called Bedroom, and create a male character called Thomas. In other languages these would be class objects since the keywords Man and Room are special keywords used for creating rooms and characters. There are other keywords such as Animal, Woman, and Thing as well for creating other characters and creatures if we wanted to add more to our interactive fiction adventure. However, the point I want to make is the person writing the text adventure doesn't actually write the commands etc they will be using. They Only declare the characters, rooms, and items in the game and the interpreter program like Winfrotz does the rest. Anyway, if you wanted to write your own custom text adventure and command interpreter getting and studying the Winfrotz source would really be unnecessary since writing a custom command interpretor for a game is really quite simple and straight forward. It is simply a matter of comparing the input string with a list of commands and acting upon it. In C++ a simple command interpreter might look like this. void InputCommand() { std::string command = ""; while (running) { std::cout << "Enter a command:\n"; std::cin >> command; if (command == "north") { GoNorth(); } elif (command == "east") { GoEast(); } elif (command == "south") { GoSouth(); } elif (command == "west") { GoWest(); } else { std::cout << "I don't know what you want me to do.\n"; } } } I know you are not a C++ developer, but I think this should demonstrate the basic concept of how a command interpreter works. You basically take an input string and compare it with any and all possible commands, and if it doesn't match you display the typical "I don't know what to do" type error message. Handling string input and comparing it varies from language to language, but this is pretty much how it is done in a nutshell. How good or bad the interpreter is largely depends on how many commands the developer adds to their input loop, and weather or not they add common alternatives such as take and get or include common shortcuts like n for north, s for south, e for east, w for west, x for examine, and so on. Still, its not rocket science. Cheers! On 7/11/13, Jim Kitchen wrote: > > Hi Thomas, > > Yeah, I'm not sure, like maybe I should have a look at the open source > winfrotz.
