Hi Charles, Ishan isn't a child, so to speak, but he sometimes acts like it. I really have to wonder by him asking a question like this what his maturity level is, or if it is a case of using the wrong word for what he meant to say. In either case it was really inappropriate to pose such a question since most people older than three know steeling is wrong. Cheers! Hi Danielle, I doubt Ishan would go to jail over it, but he could be sued. Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
Hi Milos, That idea occurred to me as well. Ishan is from India, and it occurred to me we might be experiencing a language translation issue. He might have said steel when he meant to say take, to use, or to borrow which would put things in a slightly different context. Still, it is never a good idea to use someone else's game titles etc in your own works. Cheers! I heard a ton about ChronoTrigger at least for years. I realize you’ve still got a lot to do, but I wish you every success. As a related question, have you considered handing out the workload to some of the existing SNES hobbyists and so forth? I’d hate for you to lose steam at some point if it becomes too much of a grind. All the best, Zack. On Oct 1, 2014, at 9:26 PM, Ian Reed wrote: Hi Willem, Nope, I did not wrap the function that renders the text, but that's a good guess. The Super Nintendo actually has no concept of text and games work pretty close to the hardware. It does have a concept of tiles and many games use a 1 character per tile system for rendering text. In those cases the character tiles just need to be identified once so my tool can recognize them in the future. Chrono Trigger uses this method for the party menus. The other way games render text is by taking a block of tiles and custom rendering text to them. This is done by changing bits in video ram between clock cycles. In Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2 the NPC dialog text is drawn this way. So I have to identify the block of tiles used to custom draw text, the order in which those tiles are laid out, and then do a little bit of work to tear lines apart, and then individual characters apart while identifying spaces. Once I have characters split apart, they can be identified, and then my app can read them for the future. Regarding other emulators and a function that speaks all text rendered to the screen: It's my guess that emulators for systems that do 3D rendering would have such a function. So probably Playstation and successors, Dreamcast, XBox and successors, and probably N64 and successors. You still run into a problem where reading all text rendered at all times doesn't make sense. For instance, in the Chrono Trigger party menus there is a lot of text rendered in one character per tile form at all times, but it's important to know where the menu pointer is so you can instead speak only the text that corresponds to what is currently selected. I do plan on having a hot key for getting all the text currently visible in the party menu to be displayed in a textbox in another window. That would let me continue to be brief with what I'm announcing on the party menus, but still let you have an option to hear all the text. It would also be nice if I could make this player configurable via scripting, so you could add hot keys to announce Chrono's HP, MP, and other stats displayed when he is selected. I will probably add these myself until I reach a point where scripting extensions are possible. I've also looked at Nintendo, GameBoy, GameBoy Advance, and briefly Nintendo DS. These 4 seem to render the game in a similar way to what the Super Nintendo does. But the GBA and DS have a higher number of direct drawing modes than the others, so there's a higher chance that a game on them would be rendering itself pixel by pixel and it would be more difficult to identify text. Or at least have a higher performance cost to doing so. And direct drawn games also make it more difficult to identify parts of the background map, which would hinder creating tools for navigation. So it's unfortunately already more complex than just announcing all text currently being rendered. Thanks for the words of encouragement. ~ Ian Reed Try my free games at http://BlindAudioGames.com On 10/1/2014 2:38 AM, Willem Venter wrote: Hi Ian. Well done on finding a very interesting solution to the problem of reading text out loud from the snes emulator. Did you wrap the function that renders the text in the emulator window? I think the technique can also be used for any other open-source emulator or game which has a function to "print text on screen at location x". Something I think you should add is the ability for excluding certain regions of the screen, or even prioritizing reading of others based on some trigger (e.g color or wording). Hi Ian, Didn't know chrono was made by the same people as final fantasy, but makes sense as just listening to your demo and the little game music/sound/effects in there all sounded very similar to the old final fantasy games. Excellent news that all going well the final fantasy games are on that list, although looking forward to chrono trigger would be amazing playing some of the old final fantasys too, and saw one of your posts saying that a lot of the code is generic for different games, so hopefully that' means a little less work for other games once you've finished on chrono Again, really impressed with this and looking forward to future updates Paul Lemm -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Ian Reed Sent: Thursday, October 02, 2014 5:32 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2 Hi Paul, Thanks for the enthusiasm! :) Yeah, once I have the tiles identified, and have worked out player positioning using sprites a bit better then I should be able to use audio techniques similar to Paladins of the sky or Shadowline for presenting the environment. If you create a new game called Super Liam using Liam's sounds, music, game characters, etc you can legally be sued for copyright infringement. Copyright law not withstanding there is a question of ethics here too. Re: [Audyssey] A little demo of my Super Nintendo project with Chrono Trigger and Lufia 2
Hi Ian, I just want to reiterate how awesome this is. Hi, Let me put here my two cents as I get tired of near-to-nonsense content by some people. On one hand we have here a possibility of a litteral translation of a metaphor. To steal, in some languages, can be used as a metaphor for to take, just to make the meaning stronger, so if we assume that Ishan, for whom I don't know what his mother tongue is, wanted to express himself with a metaphor like that, then the question is nonsense because, if you take something from someone, change something here and there, that's anyway not your product, and therefore there is no metaphor in your word! If he really thaught to steal a product because of his lack of ideas, money, etc, trying before that to get sympathies of developers by making accusations like he did, there is an appropriate proverb in Serbia which, when translated in english says (excuse my strong language here): whatever others talk about, a bich talks about honor. I don't want to offend anyone, the subject of the proverb is only metaphoric! If you can't dig up something cheaper on amazon (250-320 gb aught to be really, really cheap) I'd be shocked, and if you use that much storage up I'd be surprised. I recently got 2gb sticks of ddr2 ram for 30 bucks each, so that may end up adding up a little, but its still somewhat manageable. I'm not sure about the pricing of ddr3. The processor and graphics card will probably be the most expensive portions. I'd estimate $500-600 for both. Of course, you could probably get a pre-used machine somewhere, or wait until those specs drop in price. If you go the pre-used rout, all you'd really need to do is maybe grab another hdd and the extra ram. I'm no expert though, so I'd love to hear from anybody with more up-to-date knowledge. Oh absolutely and definitively not. This is very very wrong and you could face legal ramifications for doing this. So if you want to stay out of jail or take a huge bite out of your back pocket, avoid doing this at all cost. Re: [Audyssey] Gma Tank Commander
Its all about strategy. Ammo dumps can be hugely advantageous, if you use them right. Also, they make it so you can't waste all your ammo early on and you have to plan what you're going to shoot. I'm not sure what to tell you about the mobile artillery; I think it can be destroyed, but even if you pull it off, there's no notification that its actually gone. Its probably just easier to block the missiles and hope for the best. There are two ways of becoming invisible forever. One of them is a cheat, one is more of a bug. I'm not going to spoil it for you though :). -- From: "Lori Duncan" Sent: Wednesday, October 01, 2014 12:56 PM To: Subject: [Audyssey] Gma Tank Commander Hi everyone. I've recently started playing gtc again, but when I'm in sector 5 and shooting to kill those soldiers hiding in the woods, I sometimes hear what sounds like a pinging sound, almost as though my machine gun bullets are hitting off something. I was wondering if it was the mobile artillary, but if so, it still doesn't destroy it. I did think about mining the area before the bridge to try and take him out that way, but then I remembered my friendly tanks would have to get accross. One thing I do love doing though is once I'm over the bridge, and have taken out the first wave of 4 tanks, I go until I hear the cliffs are a head, then turn back around to face the bridge, and move slowly forward, dropping mines as I go. It leaves me free to watch the bridge, and listen out for the happy sound of the tanks being blown up for me. If gtc is ever updated, I'd like very much to see more cheat codes added, like endless smoke, and a way to disable the mobile artillary, until you become used to the sector layout. I also feel ammo dumps should be removed, as they seem very unrealistic, and it's too easy for them to be destroyed, especially in sector 5. Perhaps in the standard game, you could be given more ammo at the start of the game, or at the beginning of every mission. I like sector 4 for getting ammo from the truck, it seems more true to life somehow. I'd be interested to know what other people think about emprovements to gtc? [Audyssey] park boss
When building in a food court, I don't see where to set the prices of foods and drinks. Any tips? Thanks. --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] should I steal these titles?
The very question in the subject line says that the answer is no, unless the one asking is a child who doesn't know better. "Should I steal?" Obviously not. --- Be positive! Hi Ishan, Absolutely not. It is unethical to take someone else's ideas, the name of a game, etc and try and sell it as your own creation. The fact you recognize it as steeling should tell you that it is unethical, and that you don't really have a right to do this legally or ethically. For one thing there is international and national copyright laws that protect a developer's right to his or her ideas and creations. If you create a new game called Super Liam using Liam's sounds, music, game characters, etc you can legally be sued for copyright infringement. The only way around this is to get permission from the copyright holder, and usually that may involve some sort of contract where you pay him/her a certain amount of money to use their trademarks. Copyright law not withstanding there is a question of ethics here too. If a developer be it Liam, Philip, etc creates a game what right do you have to just take their sounds, music, game ideas, etc and rewrite it, and sell it as your own work. That's not the same as walking into a store and steeling something, but it is still theft of someone else's property. Steeling is still steeling and most people consider steeling an unethical practice. On 10/1/14, ishan dhami wrote: Hi all should I steal these titles I mean name of audio games? my issues is that people wouldn't come to a park called, " the park". hardly catchy enough even if it did have millions of atractions On 01/10/2014 19:25, Thomas Ward wrote: Hi Emily, As a matter of fact I think that is a good idea. Re: [Audyssey] Gma Tank Commander
Hi, something which might help you get started with gtc, is the audio review by Kelly Sapergia, which you can find on his website, or under the link for gma tank commander on audiogames.net. The review is for the old version 1.0, but the basics are still the same. :)and Kelly does a great job of explaining things such as scanning and navigation. All these ideas sound like they would be cool. I just couldn't really figure out how to play the demo. I think I will give it another go. On 10/1/14, Lori Duncan wrote: Hi everyone. [Audyssey] weird issue with jim kitchen's games
hi all. wondering if anyone has this rather weird issue with jim kitchen's games, and if so what did you do to fix it? i've managed to install it (the menu system with the game of life), and i also installed golf and monopoly. i'm finding however, i'm having major sound issues. either i get a loop (so the same thing said over and over again), which turns in to an even bigger loop, then an even bigger one, and then an even bigger one- until their's like 20 or 30 going at 1 time (so i can't really hear what's currently going on), it's hard to explain. or i get sound pauses. i'll be playing a game, and the sound will just freeze, then the sound will come back distorted for a while, and then work. never had this problem anywhere else- not even on park boss, where i believe for some of the game the same voice is used. any ideas for me? thanks --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org.
