You don't actually have to pick up the missing body part, so long as it's nearby. I should know since that's happened a few times during my Entombed LP. I haven't played this in a while, but I believe that the solution is to level the character. If I recall correctly this has something to do with changing shape and the health not correctly working. You really got lucky (I had a char that ouldn't ever take a hit without dying).
