Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi, I'm not Jim, but I'll take my best shot. In the original game, there were two types of round. In the first, the three contestants were asked a question, and one would buzz in with an answer. The remaining wo contestants would be given three choices, including the buzz-in answer, to pick, one of which was guaranteed to be the right answer. If the buz-in answer was correct, than the player who buzzed in got 3 spins, and anyone else who got it right got 1 spin. The second round was a bit simpler. For each "spin" you had a board of money amounts and prizes. When you were ready, you pressed the buton, usually shouting "stop!" and would win whatever you stopped at. The catch was that there were whammies on the board, and if you hit one you'd lose everything. Furthemore if ou hit four whammies you were out of the game. If you did not want to take a spin, you could pass the spins to the personwith the most money, and they would be required to take them. There were two suc rotations, and the winner got to come back as the chapion for the next show. I hope that explanation was at least semicoherent :) Best Regards, Hayden -Original Message- From: Gamers [mailto:gamers-boun...@audyssey.org] On Behalf Of Thomas Ward Sent: Saturday, February 16, 2013 2:04 AM To: Gamers Discussion list Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck Hi Jim, What is this game about. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Haiden. thanks for that. I've not heard of this quiz show either, but from what you say it reminds me of wheel of fortune (same as X wheel), though obviously without the hang man game. I'll be interested to see what Jim has done with the buz in question thing, since that sounds quite unique, letting you gamble that someone else is right if you don't know. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Jim, That makes sense. As for myself I just found a lot of game shows like the Price is Right just boring and unentertaining. the only kinds of game shows I have really had any long term interest in are quiz type shows such as Jeopardy or Are You Smarter than A Fifth Grader because even if I don't know the answer I can learn something from watching the contestants play. Then again, I'm a bit of a bookworm so its not surprising I like shows where I can constantly learn from the experience, test my own knowledge, rather than try and guess what some new washer and drier costs which I don't care about. My grandma loved Wheel of Fortune, but I find not being able to read the grid takes away from the experience. When I was younger, still had sight, I use to sit by my grandma and tried to help solve the puzzles. Now, that I can't see the board I have no idea what letters are up and can't really try and solve it on my own. Its for that reason something like XWheel is more my speed rather than the game show itself as with the audio game I can actually interact with the game and review the board. Cheers! Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Thomas, I have the same problem with Wheel of Fortune. Are you smarter than a fifth grader comes on at 1:00 PM. I also like that show and Jeopardy for the same reason as you. And then there are shows like Card Sharks, The newlywed show and Family Feud where you learn more about what people are thinking and doing. And other times I very much enjoy mindless entertainment. I agree. That was the only feature I really felt was lacking, because you don't always have three people sitting around who want to play an audio game. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
I actually just made a page for the game on audiogames.net in the last round of updates. I love all the sounds, though I've never seen the American game show this is based on (another one that never made it over here), so I'm not sure how many sounds are from that program and how much is justthe usual Jim craziness! My only problem is that things seem really random, and you seem to need to sit around for quite some time while the computer players spin just watching what they get which can be time consuming. You do have a little tactics whether to pass your spins or not, but generally it seems a very random game and one that takes quite a while to play through, though whether this is just a reflection of the original I don't know. Then again, I haven't played this with another person and I imagine it's more fun. Just like with any game, whether you play against human or machine, you have to wait for your turn. I think it is more realistic to see the computer take it's turn, as if it were a human player. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
I do agree charlese, however where as say if your playing the computer at games such as monopoly, uno, chess etc it's important to know what happens on the computer's turn for your own stratogy so watching them play is part of your game, in press your luck your just sitting and seeing randomly what happens as they spin the wheel. this is fine in a quick game like game of life, particularly sinse you'll be seeing where the computer lands and what happens to them and how far ahead or behind they are, however in press your luck the computer can go through many spins, and just gets or doesn't get money or prizes, which makes sitting through them all quite dull, or such was my experience. In order to see how much you should press your luck, you need to know how much the other players, whether they be human or not, have. As in any other game, part of the fun is seeing how far others will or will not press their luck, and hoping they will get a Whammy! I don't find the game a bit boring. --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Dark, A friend of mine made the board spinning sounds and I made the rest of the sounds. I could not record the TV show as there was always talking by the host, contestants or the audience. But the sounds are similar to the TV show. One other difference is that the contestants earn spins by answering trivia questions, not by rolling dice. I'm not sure why, but I like listening to the bots taking their turns. Hi Jim. As I said the program never made it to the uk (and usually if American game shows are done over here I believe the sounds and music differ), so I wasn't sure on where the sounds were from. Perhaps in future there could be an option to either speed up the bot's turns or have the sounds of the wheels etc not play on the bot's turns to make the game a little faster, I suppose it's just a preference thing though. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Why speed up the playing or eliminate it? You would then be playing a game of one against nobody. As I've said, a lot of the fun is watching to see how far others, human or computer, will press their luck. Then, when it is your turn, do you go for the win and hope that the others either press their luck too far and lose it all, or do they chicken out. --- Be positive! Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Charlse. that is why I suggested this be an option rather than a preset thing, sinse personally I find just sitting around and listening to a lot of automated numbers play out with nothing to do and nothing to interact with rather boring, sinse after all it's all random chance anyway and the fun of the game is how much you! push your random chance which is indeed largely unaffected by what other players do on their turns, just what their totals are. Hi Dark, I guess that I could shorten the amount of random time that the bots let the wheel spin, but I don't want to shorten it too much and ruin the randomization of the spin. Personally I like to go over and have a bit of a cigarette or coffee while the bots take their turns. I also put Snakes and Ladders in auto play mode by pressing the tab key. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi jim. Playing as three humans I do't find asmuch fun sinse there is no challenge or possibility of losing the game in that case, it's really just a question of time, but if you've actually set the wheel to spin in real time with the number randomly generated rather than the wheel spinning sound just play and then the game generate a random number when you hit the key, I suppose there isn't really a way to shorten the time. Re: [Audyssey] Press Your Luck
Hi Dark, Well if you put in three different human names, Dark could lose. There is some strategy, and what the bots do count if they pass spins to you or the other bot who might then get a whammie. While the wheel or board spins, the game picks a random number from 1 to 220. (the number of spaces on the board) It then adds that number to the last space it was at on the board. If that number is now larger than 220, it subtracts 220 from that number and that is where you are on the board at that time. Of course that continues until you, or a bot stops the board. Yesterday on TV a lady was up to something like $8,357.00. So now the dude takes his turn and is getting close, but gets a whammie. He has 2 spins left. He takes one and gets $500.00. He passes his last spin. She has to take it and gets a whammie and loses the $8,357.00. He only has $500.00, but wins the game.
