No, I definitely do not have the software required to create the

of it, but Jim is pretty much in charge of sending those reports as he
is the only one capable of doing that service for us at this time.

Hi Jim,

Yeah, it would be. Unfortunately, Mailman doesn't have a babble or a
thread reporting system. Although, I suspect it wouldn't' be super
difficult to add one if someone wanted to upgrade Mailman and add such
a feature. However, it would take along while before the changes
became common place on list servers.

Cheers!

Hi Dark,

Sorry, but I can not even share to Thomas the software to create the babble and
thread reports. It's a whole system. That is, I bought a tool kit and wrote
my own Email program. That program down loads all of my Email into one text
file. Then I wrote a program to daily go through that file and copy all
Audyssey Email to an Audyssey archive text file. Then of course the program to
go through the Audyssey archive file to actually create the babble and thread
reports.

I'd love to, but I'm building a pig from a kit.

Hey, Thomas.
I need to see if you will help me with a game issue or if you could
give me contact info for the developer.
I was trying to play Super Deekout, the game started and when I went to
select which diffcuilty I wanted to play the game on it gave me the
following message.

Run-time error '-2147024894 (80070002)':

I was also wondering if you might have a copy of Shooting Range by

Thanks for your help in advance!
If anyone else could help aswell that would be awsome too!

Michael, if the games are for request, why not just request them?

also, while Tom has some of the spoonbill games on Usa games interactive, I

Hi Petr,
Yes, you certainly can play Audioquake on Linux. You basically have to
get and install the share ware Linux version of Quake for Linux and
then install the Audioquake stuff. I don't recall the exact setup
procedure right now, but I did it one time quite some time back. So I
know it can be done, but I don't remember all the details on how to
get Audioquake up and running on Linux these days.

Cheers!

Hi Chastity,
Sure no problem. The Link to download Visual C++ 2008 is
http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/vs-express/VC-Express-2008.zip
and you'll probably need some help setting it up since this will be your
first time using Visual C++, and sometimes the Microsoft defaults aren't
the best options for a developer.
By the way, Visual C++ is more than just an editor. It is called an
integrated development environment because it comes with a compiler,
editor, Windows Platform SDK, and various things as well.

[Audyssey] Sorry, Thomas, another question, please?

2009-12-15 Thread Chastity MORSE
Okay, I see the point and it looks like C++ is going to be my best option.
Yes, that code you sent did look a bit complicated, but then I haven't
studied the code as yet. My questions are below and sorry about all this,
but this is all new to me.

1. Can I use the straight C++ and add Sappy later after the main program is
written or should it be included as I write the program?
2. Where do I find this VC++ express that has the Sappy with it and about
how much is that going to run me for cost?
3. In terms of direct X is that included in the ++ languages or where do I
find the code for it or do I just download some sort of link thing to tell
the program it needs this?
4. What, exactly is the first thing I should do? Find a link and tutorial to
study a ++ language?
5. In terms of cost and libraries, exactly what does this mean? I thought I
could just study the code and write everything by hand as I do with
websites? Or, do I need to pay for a ++ license and direct X license and
Sappy license to get this all going?

What do I write the code in? I mean like for websites I write in MS-notepad
and save as html. When I start writing code, do I use notepad again or do I
download something special so I can save it as C++ extension or something.?

I really appreciate all the help and I'm sorry I've so many questions, but I
want to try to get things in the right order the first time so I don't have
to redo stuff, which takes more time.

Re: [Audyssey] Sorry, Thomas, another question, please?

2009-12-15 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Chastity,
Ok, I've responded to your e-mail using a question and answer format so
you and others can get a better handle on things.

Question:
1. Can I use the straight C++ and add Sappy later after the main program is
written or should it be included as I write the program?

Answer:
Depends on how large the project is. For a new programmer like yourself
I'd recommend just focus on learning the language rather than trying to
learn an API like Sapi. For simple programs you can just print your text
directly to the screen using a function like printf or cout which is
accessible to any screen reader that has console support. Most of my
early programs just printed text to the screen in this way. Later once
you know the language better you can go back and add Sapi support to
them for practice.

Question:
2. Where do I find this VC++ express that has the Sappy with it and about
how much is that going to run me for cost?

Answer:
The answer is Visual C++ Express is totally free. It is a shareware
program created by Microsoft and you can download it from me at

http://developers.usagamesinteractive.com/downloads/vs-express/VC-Express-2008.zip
then unzip it and install it.

Question:
3. In terms of direct X is that included in the C++ languages or where do I
find the code for it or do I just download some sort of link thing to tell
the program it needs this?

Answer:
Well, DirectX is a technology that is built into Windows. In order to
program a game or anything else that uses DirectX you need to download
the DirectX SDK, set Visual C++ up to use it, and you need to read the
documentation that comes with it to learn how to program using DirectX.
DirectX is a very advanced piece of technology, and it isn't something
you can learn over night. You can get the DirectX SDK for developers
from them at

http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/directx/default.aspx
and install it.
I'll add here that Philip has a library he sells fairly cheaply called
Streamway that uses DirectX, but is easier to use than DirectX from what
he has told me. Plus you get some extras like the ability to use ogg
support, sound encryption, etc. Just thought you'd like to know.

Question:
4. What, exactly is the first thing I should do? Find a link and tutorial to
study a C++ language?

Answer:
Yes, you need to learn the C++ language before you do anything else. You
can't even begin to program using Sapi, DirectX, whatever unless you
first know how to program using C++. It's like going to a foreign
country and trying to talk to someone who can't speak English. In a case
like that it makes sense to learn the foreign language before traveling
to that country and trying to speak with someone who can't speak
English. If that makes sense.

Question:
5. In terms of cost and libraries, exactly what does this mean? I thought I
could just study the code and write everything by hand as I do with
websites? Or, do I need to pay for a C++ license and direct X license and
Sappy license to get this all going?

Answer:
No. Most libraries such as DirectX, Sapi, etc are totally free. There
are a few such as FMOD that cost a licencing fee if you use them
commercially, but things like DirectX, Sapi, are totally free. There is
no license for C++, because it is a free standard language shared by all
operating systems and developers. No one company owns the rights to C++.

Question:
6. What do I write the code in? I mean like for websites I write in
MS-notepad

and save as html. When I start writing code, do I use notepad again or do I
download something special so I can save it as C++ extension or something.?

Answer:
If you use a development tool like Visual C++ it has a built in editor
for writing programs and you can save the files as *.c, *.cpp, *.h, etc
type files. However, if you want to you can code C++ programs in
notepad, but you still have to compile them using a compiler like Visual
C++, MinGW, whatever. You'll have to decide if you can work with the
Visual C++ editor, or would rather just edit your code in notepad,
textpad, or something else.

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-12-01 Thread dark
Well Tom, if you knew where I could find such a dictionary for scansoft
daniel I'd appreciate knowing, sinse that's the voice I use for all
sapi things, and it seems far worse at missspeaking abbreviations than any
other voice I've heard, which is a shame, sinse I like it's actual
speech quality a lot.

I know where to find the dictionaries for both Sam, (hal's synth interface),
and orphius itself, though I've very rarely had to use them sinse both
have good standard pronunciation, sam's dictionary is even loaded with
nice bits of trivia, so by default it pronounces some names like hermione
properly.

i have no idea where either Sapi's or daniels dictionaries are though,
even if they exist.

I don't know why Scansoft (and probably other synth manufacturers by the
sound of it), load them down with so many pre-defined acronyms, sinse
their something which is so very variable!

The only ones which seem reasonable to me are mr. and mrs, and even
then, I've played a fair few rp games that use mr as melee rating.

Then, there are the times that you don't actually want an acronym spoken at
all sinse everyone just uses it in the short form.

For example, take the designation hms used for British navy ships.

Yes, it officially stands for her magisty's, but nobody in England (or
indeed anywhere else), would actually refer to a ship as something like the
Her magisty's victory.

Beware the grue!

Dark.

Hi Jim.

Well, i was never around in the really! early days, but remembering the
appolo external speech box with orphius I had with Hal v3, I sometimes
feel I have no right to complain these days about synths!

And don't get me started on the way talking calculators or thermometres used
to sound.

I stil remember one in a science lesson saying the air temperature was

Hi Dark,

Yeah, I have never been able to find sapi5 voice dictionary's. Really
haven't found anything but rate and volume. Sure would be cool if they
had some of the stuff that you can do with the DecTalk32 software version.
But truthfully I am just so happy that my computer can talk with a
realistic sounding female voice. I listened to the Accent SA for years,
then the Double Talk and then the Eloquence female voices. I do though
use a USB Triple Talk synthesizer on my game development computer.

Hi Jim,
Yeah, ATT Charles is a pretty good voice. I also like Lorn, but haven't
gotten around to purchasing that voice yet. Perhaps when I get Lorn I
might begin using her in games as I think it might end some of the
controversy over Karen.

Jim Kitchen wrote:

I like Crystal for Email, Lauren and Charles for games. But do use
Kate and other voices now and then. And of course Kate is on the Book
Sense. But I even like Anjali now and then just for fun.

BTW One needs to be careful when programming for sapi5, I have found
over 250 acronyms that one or more of the voices say. You know like
Crystal will say laughing out loud for LOL, By the way for BTW etc.
Some will say liter for Lt. and others will say lieutenant. Some will
say street for ST. and others will say saint. Just have to watch
stuff like that. grin

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-30 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Dark and Jim,
Been there done that as they say. I've played several text games and it
drives me nuts when you get a character like Dr. Watson and it says
Drive Watson instead of Doctor Watson. You might be playing some roll
playing game or mud set in medieval times and it says street instead of
saint. It is frustrating, but can be fixed in Window Eyes and Jaws by
using the exception dictionaries.

dark wrote:
I've noticed realspeak daniel has far more trouble with that than
orphius, or indeed sapi does.

It's rather irritating actually to play a mud and have st read as
street, or ms as manuscript.

I've tried to find daniel's dictionary to fix this, but have had
no luck so far..

That's again one reason I like orphius but as Jim said in an earlier
post, i am very familiar with it.

I probably don't need to say it, but Hal has a dictionary too
(surprised eh?).

the only problem is as Jim's said, where is sapi's dictionary! this
gets on my wick extremely when I'm playing a mud, and is often the reason I
prefer to actually use non-self-voicing If interpreters with hal, rather
than self-voicing ones with sapi.

Hi Thomas,

All I can say sis.wow. That was extraordinary. Two things though.
Firstly,
there was a sound I heard when you picked something up that sounded like
a
weapon; is that a secret, or can you tell me what that was? Secondly,
what
voice is that? It sound reminiscent of Karyn, but not quite.

Best Regards,

Hayden

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-29 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Peter,
Personally, I have always felt that Scansoft Karen is the best voice for
the Windows operating system that is currently available. It is based on
a well known singer and voice actress, Karen Jacobson, who has become
world famous for her voice. Obviously the TTS Engine falls short of her
actual voice, but the TTS Engine is close enough for her fans. Since I
could not realistically hire her for the game using the TTS Engine is
the next best thing.
I would challenge you to find a better female voice for the game. i've
tried several voices ATT Crystal, Neospeech Kate, various Cepstral
voices, and none lived up to my expectations. ATT Lorn isn't bad, but I
don't actually own it thus can't use it.

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-29 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Peter,
You have got to be kidding me. Microsoft Sam is like the absolute worst
voice I've heard for the computer. If I was going to have my customers
suffer through the torment of listening to it I might have just put Sapi
5 support into the Genesis Engine, and be done with it.
As far as why I actually switched from Heather to Karen it is a simple
matter of the fact Heather has a bad problem with pronunciation. I can
give her a word like centaur and Heather totally screws it up, and then
I have to fiddle around with the spelling until Heather comes remotely
close to saying it correctly. It's not just uncommon words either. I've
had Heather say a word like control or enter correctly one minute and
then in the next say it completely different. I think you could
understand why and how that would drive me completely mad.
As far as my selection of game voice goes nothing I choose will please
everybody. The only solution would be to add Sapi support into the
Genesis Engine. However, not only is it somewhat problematic you have to
consider the fact it could take a couple of solid weeks to rewrite all
of the speech functions etc to completely convert it over to Sapi.
So if you have a better option than Karen please let me know. I have
Neospeech Kate, but I'd rather not use it for this game. So how about
some options?

LOL. I always thought Microsoft Sam sounded suicidal. In fact I once created
a skit using Text Aloud, Sound Recorder, Gold Wave and a demo of the Dectalk
synthesizer in which Microsoft Sam committed suicide and blew up the
computer in the process. Then ATT Mike made an announcement along the lines
of Sam went nuts and killed himself and the computer and now you're screwed.
Then Dectalk sang Taps in a rudementary doo doo doo fashion. So no, I
wouldn't use Sam in games.

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-29 Thread Thomas Ward

Hi Haden,

You and me both. I couldn't even play the game if I had to use Sam. I
think I could put up with ESpeak, which sounds like crap, before Sam. At
least ESpeak I am use to since it is the default TTS Engine on Linux,
and I use it daily. So have gotten use to hearing ESpeak, but Sam
definitely is never, never, never, never, never, never, never, never,
never, never, never, never, never going to b used in my games.

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-29 Thread dark
My most amusing sam moment was when I was in the shower in colidge, and
my friends turned up unexpectedly early.

Not wanting to rush my shower, I then yelled instructions through the door
for my friends to run game of life, and we played it while I showered.

I stil remember the fits of laughter we Had, when booming through the
bathroom door loud but not clear, over the sound of the shower spray
was you may playt eh markit if you own stock, but you dnt!

In fact with my friends the phrase but you daaant! became a bit of an in
joke.

Needless to say, when my install issue for Mike and mary was fixed I was
very pleased indeed, and when I acquired realspeak daniel later
on, I was thrilled!

While I did use microsoft sam for about six months of game playing in
2006, I think going back to it would be a real torment!

Now you may disagree with me if you like sam, but you dnt!

grin!

Beware the grue!

Re: [Audyssey] About Thomas' Review...

2009-11-29 Thread dark
I've noticed realspeak daniel has far more trouble with that than
orphius, or indeed sapi does.

It's rather irritating actually to play a mud and have st read as street, or
ms as manuscript.

I've tried to find daniel's dictionary to fix this, but have had no
luck so far..

That's again one reason I like orphius but as Jim said in an earlier
post, i am very familiar with it.

Hi Thomas,

All I can say sis.wow. That was extraordinary. Two things though. Firstly,
there was a sound I heard when you picked something up that sounded like a
weapon; is that a secret, or can you tell me what that was? Secondly, what
voice is that? It sound reminiscent of Karyn, but not quite.

Best Regards,

Hayden

Was wondering about that, just wasn't completely sure; something sounded
just slightly off.

It was Karen.
Homer: Hey, uh, could you go across the street and get me a slice of pizza?
Vender: No pizza. Only Khlav Kalash.

Hi Thomas,

Yeah, actually the real Browns have never been to the Super Bowl and the post
Art Model Browns have only been to the playoffs once. This year they did not
look good against the Steelers, but did beat the Ravens and the Bengals and
only a blocked field goal with 3 seconds left on the clock stopped them from
beating the Raiders. It is early, still 12 or more games to go.

Hi,
Wow! Too bad the real Brown's aren't playing that well. I don't know
what it is with Cleveland, but they haven't had a shot at the Super Bowl
since the late 80's or early 90's. Whenever it was it has been a very
long time. The days of singing Berny Berny and Shrock Around the Clock
are all gone. Just thinking of those football songs makes me feel old.

Early to bed, early to rise makes people suspicious.

Hi Jason,

My Browns are now 13 and 0. They just beat the Dolphins 35 to 16. Three more
wins and I will have my first ever perfect regular season. grin
