Re: [Audyssey] Vista Game Compatibility Chart

2007-03-01 Thread Jim Kitchen
Hi Thomas,

Thank you very much for the offer to write an installer for me, however I am
not ready to change every one of my files on my site just for Vista.

I would very much appreciate it if you could tell me how you got my games into
the kitchensinc folder so that I could pass that information on to those who
might run Vista and have the same problem

BTW I think that is a crock that Vista will not let a person extract a zip file
to the folder of their choosing. Security is one thing, but I want to be able
to tell my computer to do what I want it to do. It seems that is becoming less
and less possible.

Thanks again.

Re: [Audyssey] Vista Game Compatibility Chart

2007-03-01 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
As for your games I have not gotten them in to the Kitchen Inc folder
yet, and will be making an installer for myself which puts them there.
However, as for reading and writing to folders under Vista keep in mind
Vista is only beginning to emulate other operating systems like Linux
which are a more secure operating environment which is a huge shock for
older Windows only users who are not use to this level of security.
For example, in Ubuntu Linux before you can install anything to the
server you must run the su program, super user, and type in your admin
password before Linux will allow you to install it to the os. You can't
change global settings, or accerss system fils without giving a super
user password.
Guess what? Windows Vista has become the same way. It is all about admin
rights and who has them and who doesn't. If you try to delete a system
file it will prompt you for a username and password and if it does not
have admin rights it refuses to take that action. If the os feels the
action will damage the os it refuses to carry out the action. It is
really for the better as far as securing from viruses, worms, etc...
As for why your files are not unpacking I have no idea, but my guess is
and was that somehow the packer is not teling the os to prompt me me for
security admin rights. It simply tries to do the write operation and
Vista comes back with no permission to access the folder.
I'm going to attempt to extract them to my local home directory, another
Linuxism, and run them from their until I create a Vista compatible
installer.
One question when I make the installer for myself do I have permission
to uploade the modified versions to my web site so those who do make the
switch can get your games?
Thanks.

Re: [Audyssey] Vista Game Compatibility Chart

2007-03-01 Thread shaun everiss
the extracters for the games use a version of winzip self extracter.
If that extracter was created in versions of winzip sfx and winzip prire to
winzip11 then I don't think that will work.
You should still be able to use the winzip to unzip the files and any zip
files, you just need to get winzip11.

You know the games of mine that you listed Baseball, Battleship, Golf, Life,

I wonder if you first ran the setup.exe file in the winkit.zip file to create

Re: [Audyssey] Vista Game Compatibility Chart

2007-02-28 Thread Thomas Ward
Hi Jim,
Yeah, I used winkit, and that wasn't the problem I encountered here.
I've been a user of your games for a number of years, and so I know how
to install your games. Smile
The problem here I believe is do to Vista's new security. Windows Vista
is all about read, write, and execute management. When it comes to
system folders like program files, Windows, Users, etc one can not just
simply self-extract a bunch a files in to a directory. This is to
increase safety from viruses, but it also prevents small time devs like
yourself from just dumping a program in the program files directory and
forgetting about it.
I can offer two solutions for this issue. One you can have
self-extractor unpack the files locally to the users home directory, or
two I can write you a setup installer for the games which is operating
system independant from 98 to Vista.
In the long run you might be best served by the second option eventually.
Cheers.

One of these deals with games and other things being incompatible, these are

also there are usb device and firewire and other things you may wish to load.
Who knows.
I'm not upgrading if we lose midi support and the wave out mix support.
