Re: [Audyssey] ship colors - Re: aliens in the outback
I actually think i was lucky in terms of my vision and games. Today, stuff tends to be far too graphically or spacially complex, --- accept the odd beat em up, while any earlier and the lack of colours in games would've been a big problem for me sinse I have trouble distincguishing in game objects in black and white. Of course, I didn't actually play Mega man until the aniversery collection in 2005, in fact my first mm game was Mega man X 2 on the Snes which my brother found second hand in 1998. I think I hit just the right period site wise. Beware the grue! Dark. --- Gamers mailing list __ Gamers@audyssey.org If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to gamers-unsubscr...@audyssey.org. Re: [Audyssey] ship colors - Re: aliens in the outback
Hi Dark, Yeah, that's exactly the type of thing I was talking about. Of course, there was no need for Megaman to change color when he used a boss weapon, but back then I just thought it was cool. However, it was that sort of showing off and rapidly changing colors that impressed the heck out of those of us who grew up witht the first black and white games. I also see how that might accidently have became an accessibility aid for you. interesting indeed, especialy from the point of view of someone with limited vision who uses colours a lot to distinguish in game objects, --- -for instance, I probably couldn't describe what a goomba looks like (another reason I read faqs), but avoiding the orange thingies is a lot easier. What you say about the Nes reminds me of a bit in the original Mega man manual where his changing colour whenever he uses a boss weapon was actuallly listed as a special feature (also great as a low vision access aide sinse I can have mega man contrast with the background nicely ;D. Since I had sight for several years I enjoy the description of identifying ship by color as that is more like the classic Atari games I use to play. I imagine since James North was sighted himself when he wrote the game he found it easier to associate ships by color as well. For one thing when arcade games first started coming out in the late 70's they were all in black and white. Once they finally were able to come up with 16 colors and later 256 colors game developers wanted to give everything a different color to make the games colorful and with lots of splashy graphics. that truly was a revolutionary thing for us sighted gamers. As early as 1984 I remember what they did with Montezuma's Revenge, and how they did their best to give each room a different color scheme to make each room and level different. As you know there were white, red, and blue keys that when to the white, red, and blue doors. Some rooms were in yellow if there was sunlight coming in and otheres were I want to say a violet color if it was gloomy. If it was bpitch black the entire screen went black unless Panama Joe happened to have a torch. When the Nintendo came out it was of course 256 color, and the graphics were even better yet. In large part because it put the 16 color scheme of games like Packman and Montezuma's Revenge to shame. The first Nintendo game I ever played was Super Mario and the game worlds were much more colorful and visually apealing. At any rate speaking as a sighted gamer I always associated things by color. Like go to room 4 and get the red key. Go to room 6 and open the red door. Jump on the blue block and break it. You get the idea.
