Re: [Audyssey] OT: changing file system on an external hard drive?
Just so you know when you change a file system. The drive has to be formatted in that system. So any files on the drive will be deleted. The fat32 can be used on big drives but not recommended, because from 32gig past that you can do what is called ghosting the drive. You can put all the files you want and they will be see able. Then if drive goes down or unplugged. you may never see past the 32gig. The file names will be there and folders, but will be errors when trying to access those files. You might want to google PSP and large drives. i think they do have a way to support them. At 06:39 PM 12/30/2010, you wrote: I know I shouldn't ask here, but I need to put isos somewhere. Re: [Audyssey] OT: changing file system on an external hard drive?
well you can have fat drives bigger than they are supposed to do but you need to use linux or something to make the origional drive to bypass the safetys. There is the following. fat, 1mb. fat 12 12mb fat 16 2gb fat 32 32gb ntfs 2tb. There was supposed to be another system called win fs but nothing happened with that. Its not recomended to make a drive outside the safety capacity of the other drive as data can corrupt and the format can not be recomended as stable by the os so its your own risk. Try looking for an update to ntfs on the ps3 or whatever. if not look for some tweak or hack or mod. If all else fails you can always find what file system the ps uses. ok sony are probably not gona tell you but there are probably hack tools to convert stuff to that so again if you have a partition on the drive set like the ps file system, then as long as you can access that thing from windows or convert files into that format then you should be ok. I was able to access a ps cd in windows and they seem to use standard exe, dll and wavs though they did not run on my system so must have modified headers or something. Re: [Audyssey] OT: changing file system on an external hard drive?
well the other issue is that fat32 drives can only be 30gb. you really need to just split the partition. Though its strange that you can't get an update. If you can't get an official well crack the system. Yeah I know this is probably not recomended but I really think that ntfs being the main system needs to be read, the limits for fat32, the performance slowdowns, etc that could be a problem. On that note, if your device can use a smart card or flash card. maybe you would be better suited to spend cash on a 32gb drive or 16 or even several 8gb cards to store the images. or what ever. All is not lost, there are probably 40gb drives rooting round, if you get that or an 80gb or even 320 or something then split it into 30gb partitions you may be ok though getting a 40 split to 20gb, or a 60 split to 30 will work. a 40 is about 37 so splitting that in half well have a 30 then another 10 or whatever will work to. There are various ways round it. If you were local I have a busted 320 with a mangled case which may or may not work, I have also a 40 which has power issues but the drive may work outside the laptop caddy I have just not bothered testing it. Well, the fact is I don't believe the ps3 reads ntfs drives... which is what I'm wanting to do. If I do that then I don't have to transfer movies to a disc or burn them if I want to watch them with someone on a TV. I just plug my drive into the ps3 and I'm good to go. But I'll work something out. lol.
