I agree that their defense is good. Statistically they are #7 in the country,
but I believe that if you look at the national rankings of the offenses they've
faced, you'll see that the lofty ranking may be a bit of fool's gold.  The
highest ranked offenses they've faced are in the 50s and they've had some
trouble with them. We're coming into this game ranked #18 on offense, and on a
roll.

Sure - it's a rivalry game and in those anything can happen, but if we just
settle down and play our game, don't give them short fields or der\fensive
scores, they shouldn't be able to stay on the field with us.

FSU isn't a mediocre defense; it is the #7 defense in the country. (The team
is mediocre overall, but that's because of a poor offense.) Anyway, my
point
is that this team could beat us if our team, like you, isn't worried at
all.
If they take FSU seriously, and I think they will, then we'll do to them as
we've already done to the other highly-ranked defenses we've played.
But I
don't take anything for granted in this sport and so I'll continue to
be
nervous until the game gets underway.

We haven't beaten mediocre defenses. We've beaten the #2 and #3 defenses
 in
the country. We will destroy the semis. I'm not really worried at all. I
just hope we beat Fat Bobby by the largest margin he's ever been beaten.

Well it's all about our team. FSU can't begin to keep up with us if we're
 on
our game, so the only risk is that we overlook them and come in there
playing flat. It's always possible, but I have a sense that these guys
really took the loss to Ole Miss to heart and that they understand the need
to be mentally prepared for every game. If they were going to go flat, I
think this last Saturday is when they would have done it.

I am nervous too, partly because of the loss of Marsh in a very critical
position, but mostly just because I know the 'holes' will be looking at us
the way we looked at Georgia going into that game. They'll want to win this
so badly they'll have been dreaming about it all week. For a mediocre team,
knocking your biggest rival out of the MNC race would be the highlight of
your year. They'll play a very tough game and won't give up ground
willingly. But, in the end, I think our guys will prepare well, and will be
up for the game. If they do, we'll be fine and yet another leading defense
will have its stats shot all to heck.

Notebook: Meyer veteran of UF-Florida State rivalry

Three games into the Florida-Florida State rivalry is more than enough time
for UF coach Urban Meyer to understand the hatred associated with it.

It's nasty, Meyer said Monday. This is an ugly one.

His team is so amped for Saturday's game in Tallahassee that Meyer admitted
after The Citadel game that some of the veterans on his team had already
turned their focus to the Seminoles by halftime.

Both UF and FSU rank first in their respective conferences in total offense
and the Seminoles are second in the ACC in total defense, while the Gators
sit at third in the SEC.

Meyer said he is expecting to get the best out of FSU's defense and doesn't
see much of a change from its game plan from years past.

It's FSU defense, he said. Schematically, they're very similar to what
they've been in the past. Talent-wise they've been very similar and you
watch them and that's who they are. Very well coached and they're a
hardnosed, tough outfit that runs well.

 Two-minute drill

With the recent blowouts by the Gators, Meyer said he was so concerned
 about
his team being unaccustomed to having to make any sort of crucial drive
 late
in a game that he had a heart-to-heart with his players about such
 situations.

Meyer will now end each practice with 15-20 minutes devoted to running a
 no-huddle, two-minute offense.

Every Tuesday and Wednesday we're going to finish practice with a real
 game
 situation,

Are the Florida Gators the best team in college football? Believe it, as the
Gator Bulldozer leveled the Bulldogs on Saturday. An impressive win over
the Citadel, huh? Let's go back a few weeks to see why the Florida Gators
are the best team in college football.

Did I really just type that? Sorry, 'Bama, Texas, and OU fans, but it's
true. Over the last six weeks, the Gators have been totally dominant on both
sides of the football. The offense has been annihilating the opposition and
scoring like a high school kid on prom night. The defense has been tougher
than Chuck Liddell. Can anyone disagree with that? Let's take a look:

10/11 No. 4 LSU 5-1 (3-1) W 51-21

10/25 Kentucky 6-1 (4-1)W 63-5

11/01 @ No. 6 Georgia 7-1 (5-1) W 49-10

11/08 @ Vanderbilt 8-1 (6-1)W 42-14

11/15 No. 25 S. Carolina 9-1 (7-1) W 56-6

11/22 Citadel 10-1 (7-1)W 70-19

It started with the shellacking they laid on the LSU Tigers in which they
dominated from the opening kickoff and exposed the weakness of the much
overrated Tiger defense. Then came the destruction of early season surprise
Kentucky, which they turned it into a laugher and got tuned up for the most
impressive win of the season, at Georgia. They traveled to Athens and took
the Bulldogs to the woodshed between the hedges. Then Vandy was brought back
to earth and they laid the biggest whooping the Ole Ball Coach has ever
seen. Then they had time to heal up by feasting on the Citadel, the only
non-conference game during this streak.

The second season started for Florida on September 28th, the day after
losing 31-31 to Ole Miss at the Swamp. That seemed to light a fire in the
Gators as they have gone on to win seven straight, averaging 53 points a
game. Just as impressive has been the Gator defense, who has given up only
12 points a game, the most being LSU's 21 (on the road) during this time. So
what, you may say? Well, when you consider three of those games were on the
road and included two top-10 teams in the streak, you have to describe their
play as dominant. Don't get me wrong, Oklahoma looked great Saturday against
Texas Tech, but I'll put my money on the Gators. (Do you know how hard that
is for an LSU fan to say?)

As much as I cannot stand Urban Meyer, he has righted the ship in
Gainesville and has them playing outstanding football. Tim Tebow is an
arrogant, cocky jerk who is one hell of an athlete and if not for the great
year the Big 12 trio (Sam Bradford, Graham Harrell, and Colt McCoy) are
having, would be your leading Heisman candidate. Florida is a legit threat
in the BCS picture, but will probably not get a shot at the national title.

Look at this with an open mind: if Florida beats FSU and the beats 'Bama in
the SEC title game, how can they honestly be overlooked for a title shot? I
know the Big 12 has three capable teams in Texas Tech, Texas, and Oklahoma,
but come on, do you really think any of those teams are better than Florida,
on both sides of the football?

The BCS was setup to let the two best teams in

a high school kid on prom night. The defense has been tougher than Chuck
Liddell. Can anyone disagree with that? Let's take a look:
10/11 No. 4 LSU 5-1 (3-1)   W 51-21

10/25 Kentucky 6-1 (4-1)    W 63-5

11/01 @ No. 6 Georgia 7-1 (5-1) W 49-10

11/08 @ Vanderbilt 8-1 (6-1)    W 42-14

11/15 No. 25 S. Carolina 9-1 (7-1)  W 56-6

11/22 Citadel 10-1 (7-1)    W 70-19
It started with the shellacking they laid on the LSU Tigers in which they
dominated from the opening kickoff and exposed the weakness of the much
overrated Tiger defense. Then came the destruction of early season surprise
Kentucky, which they turned it into a laugher and got tuned up for the most
impressive win of the season, at Georgia. They traveled to Athens and took the
Bulldogs to the woodshed between the hedges. Then Vandy was brought back to
earth and they laid the biggest whooping the Ole Ball Coach has ever seen. Then
they had time to heal up by feasting on the Citadel, the only non-conference
game during this streak.
The second season started for Florida on September 28th, the day after losing
31-31 to Ole Miss at the Swamp. That seemed to light a fire in the Gators as
they have gone on to win seven straight, averaging 53 points a game. Just as
impressive has been the Gator defense, who has given up only 12 points a game,
the most being LSU's 21 (on the road) during this time. So what, you may say?
Well, when you consider three of those games were on the road and included two
top-10 teams in the streak, you have to describe their play as dominant. Don't
get me wrong, Oklahoma looked great Saturday against Texas Tech, but I'll put
my money on the Gators. (Do you know how hard that is for an LSU fan to say?)
As much as I cannot stand Urban Meyer, he has righted the ship in Gainesville
and has them playing outstanding football. Tim Tebow is an arrogant, cocky jerk
who is one hell of an athlete and if not for the great year the Big 12 trio
(Sam Bradford, Graham Harrell, and Colt McCoy) are having, would be your
leading Heisman candidate. Florida is a legit threat in the BCS picture, but
will probably not get a shot at the national title.

Based on this quote, I don't think you have to worry about the team...

Sophomore cornerback Joe Haden said he realized preparation for this game
was a bit different when he noticed the game plan packet the team received
at the beginning of the week was much thicker than the others this year.

The scouting report is like they've been looking at (the FSU game) the
whole season, Haden said.

FSU isn't a mediocre defense; it is the #7 defense in the country. (The team
is mediocre overall, but that's because of a poor offense.) Anyway, my point
is that this team could beat us if our team, like you, isn't worried at all.
If they take FSU seriously, and I think they will, then we'll do to them as
we've already done to the other highly-ranked defenses we've played. But I
don't take anything for granted in this sport and so I'll continue to be
nervous until the game gets underway.

Well it's all about our team. FSU can't begin to keep up with us if we're on
our game, so the only risk is that we overlook them and come in there
playing flat.

Very well coached and

Yeah, good point on the offenses they've faced. I also liked Robbie Andreu's

keep our kids from getting complacent. It's not that I really expect
anything bad to happen, but football is so much about emotion and this
particular game is always more about the day than about previous records.
FSU always makes me nervous and there's nothing that can change that, even
when I look objectively at our teams and see that we ought to blow them out
easily. Saturday can't get here fast enough for me!

I agree that their defense is good. Statistically they are #7 in the
country, but I believe that if you look at the national rankings of the
offenses they've faced, you'll see that the lofty ranking may be a bit of
fool's gold. The highest ranked offenses they've faced are in the 50s and
they've had some trouble with them. We're coming into this game ranked #18
on offense, and on a roll.

Sure - it's a rivalry game and in those anything can happen, but if we just
settle down and play our game, don't give them short fields or der\fensive
scores, they shouldn't be able to stay on the field with us.

I have always been pleased with parking 1-2 blocks east and 1-2 blocks north
of the intersection of NW 22nd Street and 8th Avenue. From there it's a one
mile walk through the JJ Finley shoolyard to BHGS. You'll be jazzed by the
time you get there...lots to see along the way...21st Street deadends into a
path that will lead you to Finley...then just follow the crowd. It's very easy
in and out via 16th Avenue to 9th Avenue to 21st Street or Terrace.

  Enjoy...wish I could attend...!

[gatortalk] TWO FLORIDA STATE RECEIVERS ARRESTED

2008-11-26 Thread GatorB896
Two weeks ago, Florida State suspended five wide receivers in connection with a
fight on campus, although at the time no arrests had been made.

Today police arrested two of the wide receivers on misdemeanor battery charges
stemming from the fight.

The receivers, 20-year-old redshirt freshmen Bert Reed and Cameron Wade, turned
themselves in at the Leon County Jail and posted bond. Both are suspended for
Saturday’s game against Florida. The other three receivers who were suspended
two weeks ago are expected to play against the Gators.

Reed is fourth on the team with 16 catches for 253 yards. Wade plays sparingly
and has only one catch this year. Campus police are still investigating the
fight, which has been described as a brawl between football players and
fraternity members.

I am nervous as well. However, I believe we will stop the running game and
pick off Ponder 3 times in the first half. We will lead 42-6 at halftime.
