Tough game at UK and Nick was great. Just a 3-pointer short of beating UK,
the refs and the tv announcers. They were so worried that UK might have 3
losses in a row at home! Whatever happened to unbiased announcers?

I just saw the most bizarre call that resulted in Hodges ejection. Hodge
apparently accidently stepped on a Kentucky player. I hope this is reviewed at
the league office. The announcer said that the call was correct. If that is
the rule, the rule MUST be changed. That is bizarre.

There is something bad wrong about the numbers in this table. I would bet big
money that the University of Florida does not accept 42% of those that apply.
There must be some pre-screening going on. Perhaps there is a preliminary
application that is used to screen the pool? Does anyone know?

Other than that, I kind of like the idea used to measure popularity.

Most Popular Colleges: National Universities

Posted January 26, 2009

So which colleges do students really want to go to? One way to find out is to
look at a school’s yield, the percentage of applicants accepted by a university
who end up enrolling at that institution in the fall. The figures in this table
are from the fall 2007 entering class and show the admit yield and overall
acceptance rate. If a school has a high yield (a large proportion of those
admitted enroll), it means that the school is most likely very popular with a
top reputation and that the students are highly motivated to go there. A very
low yield means that the school could be a “safety” or second choice for many
of those who apply. Colleges use yield as a key factor in determining how many
students they need to admit each year.

55.32

This table does not account deferred

applications or other unique situations.

As the acceptance rate at the University of Florida has trended
downward, the application process has become increasingly competitive.
The university has a freshmen retention rate of 93%.[30] For the first-year
students that enrolled at UF in 2008, the median SAT score is 1240 - 1410, and
the Median GPA was 4.1 - 4.4.[54] UF's class of 2007 yield rate was at 57%, and
looks to be very selective for coming years.
In the words of Sarasota Herald-Tribune
reporter Anna Scott, "Three years after university officials capped the
size of the freshman class at about 6,600, competition at UF is at an
all-time high, forcing admissions officers to choose among the
brightest and leaving behind an unprecedented number of disappointed
families. Of those who applied to be part of this fall's incoming
freshman class, an estimated 42 percent were accepted -- the lowest
acceptance rate in the history of the state's public schools."[55]
Selectivity at the state's top university is expected to heighten as UF
continues to work toward becoming one of the nation's Top 10 public
universities.[55]
In 2008, the acceptances reached a new low when out of 28,000
applicants, only 10,000 were accepted (An acceptance rate of around 37
percent).[56

Did anybody watch the game last night on ESPN?

Another pain filled night for me yesterday...great show put up by Calathes
(I am not going to totally blame him for the loss though...since there is
not telling what would have happened even if he had made all his 3 FTs). The
rest of the team needs show up real fast!

Dan Werner...what is with him? There was so much promise and expectations
but so less productiviity. He seems so indecisive every time he has the ball
in his hand! :-(

There has to be a catch. When I went to the University in 1970, the
acceptance rate was much lower. I absolutely cannot believe that we approve
42% of our applicants unless there is a prescreening to cut down the
applications. As evidence, you only need to look at the average SAT and
High School GPA. Those are substantially above the norm, not 8% above the
norm (50%-42%).

This table does not account deferred
applications or other unique situations.

As the acceptance rate at the University of Florida has trended downward,
the application process has become increasingly competitive. The university
has a freshmen retention rate of 93%.[30]

For the first-year students that enrolled at UF in 2008, the median SAT
score is 1240 - 1410, and the Median GPA was 4.1 - 4.4.[54]
  UF's
class of 2007 yield rate was at 57%, and looks to be very selective for
coming years.

In the words of Sarasota Herald-Tribune
  reporter Anna Scott,
"Three years after university officials capped the size of the freshman
class at about 6,600, competition at UF is at an all-time high, forcing
admissions officers to choose among the brightest and leaving behind an
unprecedented number of disappointed families. Of those who applied to be
part of this fall's incoming freshman class, an estimated 42 percent were
accepted -- the lowest acceptance rate in the history of the state's public
schools."[55]
Selectivity at the state's top university is expected to heighten as UF
continues to work toward becoming one of the nation's Top 10 public
universities.[55]
In 2008, the acceptances reached a new low when out of 28,000 applicants,
only 10,000 were accepted (An acceptance rate of around 37 percent).[56

There is something bad wrong about the numbers in this table. I would bet
big money that the University of Florida does not accept 42% of those that
apply. There must be some pre-screening going on. Perhaps there is a
preliminary application that is used to screen the pool? Does anyone know?

[gatortalk] Golden Telephone

2009-02-11 Thread Art Wroble

 Subject: Golden Telephone

A man decided to write a book about churches around

the country. He started by flying to Los Angeles and started

working east from there.

Going to a very large church, he began taking

photographs and making notes. He spotted a golden telephone

on the vestibule wall and was intrigued with a sign, which

read "Calls: $10,000 a minute."

Seeking out the pastor he asked about the phone and

the sign. The pastor answered that this golden phone is, in

fact, a direct line to heaven and if he pays the price he

can talk directly to God.

The man thanked the pastor and continued on his way.

As he continued to visit churches in Salt Lake City, Austin,

Baton Rouge, Columbus, Tuscaloosa , and around the United

States, he found more phones, with the same sign, and the

same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrived in Gainesville, Florida. Upon

entering a Church in Gainesville, he saw the usual golden

telephone.

But THIS time, the sign read "Calls: $0.35 cents."

Fascinated, he asked to talk to the pastor,

"Father Jones, I have been in cities all across the

country and in each church I have found this golden

telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven

and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the

cost was $10,000 a minute. Your sign reads only $0.35

cents a call. Why?"

The priest, smiling benignly, replied : "Son, you're in

Gainesville, Florida now, home of the Florida Gators - 3

times BCS Football Champions, 2 times Basketball

Champions; it's the city with the prettiest women, the

best parties, and the best state university -- it's got

the best hospital, great food, great neighborhoods and

some of the friendliest people in the world!

You're in God's Country it's a local call."

AMEN

I started fall of 1971 and graduated August, 1973. I was in the Journalism
college when it was in the west side of the stadium. I thought it was great
because I'd see the stadium everyday and Yon Hall was the east side of the

Congrats Darlene!!! I got in to the College of Journalism after attending
Pensacola Junior College. When I started at PJC I really didn't know what
field of major I wanted, but after working on both the newspaper and annual
staff, I knew I wanted to major in Journalism. At the time (1970's) UF had the
only College of Journalism. Every other University had Journalism as a school
in their Arts department. I never got to fulfill my dream of being the next
Ernest Hemingway, but that degree opened doors for me. UF's College of
Journalism is a wonderful school.
