Well, I'm NO lawyer, but I'll bet he's going to be disciplined by his team
and have to "earn" his way back onto the team. Remember: This is a
misdeamnor charge, so he shouldn't be kicked off the team. Coach Meyer is a
strict disciplinarian, but he is also fair and willing to give those that
deserve it a second chance.

Jenkins, 20, was arrested on misdemeanor charges of affray and resisting
arrest without violence, according to a report.

Police received a report of a fight in the 100 block of South Main Street
and arrived at the location at about 2 a.m., Saturday to find Jenkins
fighting with about five other people. An officer ordered the group to stop
fighting but no one listened to the commands, the report stated.

The officer then drew out a Taser and told the group stop. At that point,
Jenkins hit another person in the head, police reported. The officer then
used the Taser on Jenkins.

Jenkins was hit with one cycle from the Taser, but afterward he stood up and
ran away.

The officer reported he yelled at Jenkins to stop but he kept running. He
was later arrested about one and a half blocks away. Police said Jenkins
admitted he was fighting with the others because he thought they were trying
to steal his chain, according to the report.

UF’s Horschel named All-America
Special to The Gainesville Sun
Published: Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:34 a.m. Last Modified: Monday, June 1, 2009 at 11:34 a.m.
Florida senior golfer Billy Horschel was named to the Division I PING All-America First Team for the 2008-09 season, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced over the weekend.
It is the fourth year Horschel has earned All-America honors and the third time that he was named to the first team.
Horshel became the fifth Gator golfer to be named an All-American four times. Matt Every, Gary Koch and Camilo Villegas are the only other UF alumni to earn first-team honors three times, and Horschel is the only Gator to earn three first-team honors and a second-team honor. Every earned honorable mention All-America honors as a freshman, while Villegas was a third-team selection his junior season. Koch did not earn All-America honors his freshman season.
“I’m extremely happy for Billy,” UF coach Buddy Alexander said. “He’s worked hard and he deserves this. He’s the most decorated player that I’ve ever had, earning first-team All-America honors three times and second-team honors once. He has certainly been a great player for the Gators.”
Horschel was also named the SEC Golfer of the Year and was a unanimous first-team All-SEC selection in the coaches’ voting. Horschel joined Koch as the only two players in Florida golf history to earn first-team honors four times.
Horschel led the SEC in scoring average this season, averaging 71.28 strokes per round. He placed in the top seven in eight of 11 tournaments this season. He shot par-or-better in 21 of his 32 rounds and he finished the season ranked ninth in the nation in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index Ratings.
He was the individual medalist at the SEC Championships and was the runner-up at the NCAA Southwest Regional in Austin, Texas. Horschel was also a semifinalist for the 2009 Ben Hogan Award, college golf’s most prestigious award.

How many of those open container violations would result in an arrest in Coral
Gables? Of anyone, let alone a football player.

Notice that the article is conveniently void of context, namely the nature of
the arrests, and more importantly, how they were handled by the football
programs in question.

And the number of players involved in on-field, helmet swinging brawls during
that same time frame? By my count, UM 14, UF 0.

The only paper to cover this "story" was the Miami Herald, probably because
the player himself is from Miami.

It could be a "walk-off" walk, Bill. It means the result of the batter is
that the game ends with their at-bat and their team wins and walks off.

[gatortalk] Re: Gator softball

2009-06-01 Thread A. Leon Polhill
Yep. Paula and I were out of town this weekend, so had to follow the Friday
and Saturday games in the media. But, we got home at 4:00 PM Sunday and
were in our seats at 5:15 PM for the 6:30 game. The game was decided in the
first inning with the Gators scoring 5 runs and the Miami Head Coach being
ejected in the bottom of the inning. One of the most boring baseball games
I have ever seen.

I have ordered our regular season seats for this coming weekend and we will
attend all games at McKethan.

Go Gators!

Yep, it's lookin' bad for the girls. Down 5-2 two outs. Bottom of the 7th.
What to do? Load the bases. Hit a Grand Slam!
Gators win.
Baseball is ahead 14-2 over Miami.
It's great to be a Florida Gator!

Man, you have to look hard to find out about the incident referenced here.

The "player" is Marquis Hannah. He is a walk-on, never having been recruited or
offered a scholarship by UF.

He has not even dressed for a game for almost two years, I think that he
dressed for the Troy game.

I'm struggling to see how this reflects upon Meyer's judgment or the
stewardship of the program.

The only paper to cover this "story" was the Miami Herald, probably because the
player himself is from Miami.

[gatortalk] Re: FW: [gatornews] [SUN]: Walk-off grand slam lifts UF softball to championship series

2009-06-01 Thread Helen Huntley
You are correct about the walkoff terminology. A score that puts the home
team (the team batting second) ahead in the bottom of the final inning in
regulation or in extra innings is considered a walkoff because it ends the
game. Under normal circumstances, of course, the team would continue to bat
because it had not had three outs.
