LOL. Are those early days archived, Randy? It might be fun to go back and
read them. But then I'd have to sub to THFGT and then I'd get sucked into

[gatortalk] Re: We're the #1 team in the nation ?!?!

2009-09-13 Thread Arthur Polhill
That's fine with us, Mary; but, we may have better options.

Entrance to the Alumni Association at Emerson Hall is free for members but
costs $20 for non-members just to enter.  If you are a member of your
local Gator Club you may be a member of the UFAA.  A single annual membership
is $40, family $50.  You must have your UFAA membership card or photo ID to
enter without paying the $20.

Once inside, you find air-conditioning, immaculately clean restrooms, several
areas with large projection screen TV's, and a lunch which is for sale at a
reasonable price.  This opens 3 hours prior to kickoff.

If that is everyone's choice as a meeting place, I suggest we meet at 12:30
PM.  Paula and I will leave at 1:30 PM to attend the Gator Booster Pre-Game
Reception in the O'Dome.  If we have enough Gator Boosters in attendance we can
all go over to that with the non-members going as guests of the members
present.   That way, no one would be charged for anything.  A free lunch is
served.  If that works out, we might want to skip the Alumni Association
gathering.

[gatortalk] Re: We're the #1 team in the nation ?!?!

2009-09-13 Thread Steve McKibben
It was indeed nice to get to spend a few minutes with Paula and Leon yesterday!

As far as having an off-year GatorTalk get together (the next official
picnic is scheduled to be held next year) the Alumni Association tailgate is a
nice and easy option - it's air conditioned, food and drink are available, and
there are big screens airing other games/ESPN Gameday in conference rooms, but
unless you're a card carrying UAA member there is an admission fee.

If I knew who was coming and for how long (I'm sure that many on here have
their own tailgating traditions) I'd be willing to bring a grill and cook
burgers, brats, dogs, etc. at some TBD on campus tailgate spot as a prt of our
normal game day. The only game that I don't have tickets for is Saturday's UT
game (at least as of right now) so if any of you decide to meet up for that one
I'll have to be there in spirit only.

If we want to emulate last year's picnic with a post-game cookout the FIU game
could provide an opportunity to do so - it's a likely candidate for a noon
kickoff, it should be a little cooler/less mosquito friendly, and ticket
availability probably won't be a big issue.

Absent any of that, I'll be glad to provide my cell # by request in private
email, and if you happen to find yourself on campus with time to kill, any of
you can call me and I'll let you know where we're at and what we're doing in
case you'd like to stop by and say hi.

I did, and the only comment came from a Texas fan. He believes we'll be playing
them in Pasadena, so he smiled broadly and said we're still #1 #2!. All the
Tenn fans either dropped their eyes or looked away, but a few of them growled.
Our pastor is a rabid vol, and when they win, he always mentions it in his
sermon. The absence of a vol remark left a void today. You could tell he was
very conscious about avoiding it. :)

On a lighter note, my daughter's boyfriend has become scarce. :)

The archive goes back to Oct of 2000, and the discussion at that time was
Bush Gore. The older archives (1999 and early 2000) were lost when Gator

LOL. Are those early days archived, Randy? It might be fun to go back and
read them. But then I'd have to sub to THFGT and then I'd get sucked into

his agression out with the lawnmower. That's another reason I'm glad they lost

[gatortalk] our seats this year

2009-09-13 Thread Cecilia
So... my husband found a way to get season tickets last year and this year -
eBay. Our seats last year were fabulous... seatbacks in the north endzone,
section 326, 3-4 rows from the last row of seatbacks, surrounded by
enthusiastic, non-obnoxious Gators. The story from our eBay seller last year
was interesting. He and his wife were getting a divorce and couldn't agree on
who would get the tickets... so they were selling them and splitting the
proceeds. The people around us were nice enough, but they seemed to be a bit
resentful that the couple they had been sitting with for years wasn't there.
Hmm.

I kept meaning to ask here if anyone was close to us, but I also kept
forgetting to do so. LOL. This year, I'm remembering to ask! :-)

Our tickets this year - from another wonderful eBay seller. His story is that
he's in Pennsylvania, has been battling an illness and isn't able to make it to
the games... but, of course, he doesn't want to lose his seats!

We're in the south endzone, section 53, row 81. We like the people around us,
and they've been pretty congenial to us so far. The only down side of these
seats is that the opponent's band is so close, they drown out the Gator band.
I was keenly aware of Troy's band's continued goal of playing over the Pride of
the Sunshine all day yesterday. I guess they were trying to make up for the
way the Gators were stomping the crap out of their football team. ;-)

Is anyone else close to that area?

My mom's tickets are in the south endzone. I know what you mean about the
band. I have wondered about piping the band into the stadium speakers instead
of any recorded music. This would drown out the opposing team fans and band
altogether - that might be cool, but I digress.
I can't remember the section right now, but the row is the 2nd row of chair
backs, just under the overhang. I plan to be there for the Vandy game, will
get exact seat locations then.

Gator football fans, this book's for you By MARK GIBBINS Special to The News-Journal
The timing of this book could not be more fortuitous. As the defending National Champions and winners of two of the past three BCS titles, the University of Florida is enjoying success on a scale unprecedented in their history. If that isn't enough, fan excitement may be at an all-time high because the Gators enter this season as the No. 1-ranked team and the odds-on favorite to repeat as National Champions. Add to that the prospect of UF's first undefeated season and the cult status of quarterback Tim Tebow, and most would agree that in 2009 it is great to be a Florida Gator.
"Historic Photos Of University Of Florida Football" by Kevin McCarthy is a coffee-table book that pictorially depicts Gator football throughout the years. It contains more than 200 oversized pages and includes many never-before-published photos. The book is organized chronologically, as one might expect, from the founding of the University of Florida to the present day. A brief narrative and an 1884 sketch of Gainesville cover the period from 1853 to 1899. From 1900 on, black-and-white photos with accompanying explanatory information trace the progression of time.
Interesting tidbits are sprinkled throughout the book, such as the 1922 team's trip to the White House and meeting with President Warren G. Harding. Or, that the announcer for the first game at Florida Field was Red Barber, then a Florida student. The captioning is occasionally cheesy, however, as in this bit of hyperbole: "The cheerleaders were usually skilled gymnasts who could leap and do breathtaking cartwheels." Breathtaking cartwheels?
Not all years are equal and one might expect memorable years to receive more attention than not-so-memorable ones, but that is not necessarily the case with this book. The content often seems to be determined more by the availability of photos than the relative weight of the subject matter. Inexplicably, there is only one post-1996 photograph. It isn't as if there were no Florida football milestones after that point; say two National Championships (2006 and 2008), and a Heisman Trophy for a certain Mr. Tebow (2007).
Another puzzling characteristic is the absence of color photographs. The bright colors and pageantry of college football would have added excitement to the pages and visually accentuated the transition from the primitive gridiron battlefield to the lavishness and spectacle of today's Coliseum.
After reading the book, I don't feel greatly more knowledgeable about the subject matter -- I feel like I've learned the answers to a lot of trivia questions -- but it was an enjoyable read nonetheless. While "Historic Photos Of University Of Florida Football" may not be compelling, it is interesting. Die-hard Gator fans (are there any other kind?) will enjoy it.

Florida Gators set to silence Tennessee and coach Lane Kiffin

GAINESVILLE, Fla. - We didn't need to hear anyone call Lane Kiffin a bozo or
a clown or out of his league Saturday afternoon.

All we need to remember about the enormity of the UF-Tennessee game next
weekend is a little quote the Tennessee coach said after he was hired. You
remember the one:

I'm really looking forward to embracing some of the great traditions at the
University of Tennessee, for instance the Vol Walk, running through the T,
singing Rocky Top all night long after we beat Florida next year. It will be
a blast.

The Gators blew it up and posted it in their football complex in the spring,
though it is no longer up now. So there is no need to buy all the
politically correct statements coming out of The Swamp after the Gators'
56-6 win over Troy.

UF-Tennessee is always a big game. But this is sure to be one of the most
anticipated games at The Swamp in recent memory. Surely, it's the most
anticipated in the rivalry since 2001, when No. 5 Tennessee beat No. 2 UF in
a game postponed until December because of 9-11, denying the Gators a shot
at the national title.

Now, the Gators would love nothing more than to shut Kiffin up. The Gators
have won four straight in this rivalry. And let's be honest, the game was
starting to become a dud, what with Tennessee falling from the top tier of
the SEC East as the Gators made their ascent back.

Along comes Kiffin to inject the right spark at the right time. Not only did
he make those inflammatory remarks, he then accused Meyer of cheating during
the recruitment of Nu'Keese Richardson, who switched his commitment from UF
to Tennessee at the last possible moment.

A brouhaha erupted. Kiffin had to apologize for the false accusations, but
he repeatedly has said he is not sorry for poking the bear.

In fact, he was downright tickled when he heard the Gators had put his words
up in their football complex. He actually said, Beautiful. Awesome.
Wonderful. They even put our logo on it. Free advertising and we didn't have
to pay for it.

Gator fans have wanted a merciless beat down ever since Kiffin started
fanning the flames. A company started printing T-shirts in April that read,
Memo to Lane Kiffin. Be scared. Very scared. The beat down is near!

Message boards have been filled with fans urging Meyer to run up the score,
to make Kiffin pay in the only real way he can. They want a record-setting
trouncing. Tennessee struggled and lost against UCLA on Saturday, so it
could happen. The largest margin of victory the Gators have posted over
Tennessee is 39, in 2007. They scored 62 in a win in 1995.

Fans want blood. Guarantee the Gators do, too, even if nobody will say it.
Jeff Demps and David Nelson both gave tepid no-comments when asked whether
there would be extra motivation for the game this week.

Meyer addressed the start of Rivalry Week in the locker room after the
game, where players emphatically said the season begins now. Meyer said
practice Tuesday would be the hardest practice we'll ever have.

In the spring, Meyer did acknowledge that Kiffin's comments were enough to
fire him up. But now that game-time is near, he refused to pull a Kiffin and
start talking trash.

I want to make sure this game is about the Tennessee football players
versus the Florida football players, Meyer said. The thing that will never
happen around here is it's about coach or coaches. I told them this is
preparation for playing a game. Period.

Linebacker Ryan Stamper admitted he was already thinking about Tennessee,
but said nothing more of the game.

Tim Tebow was asked how long it took for Meyer to address Tennessee in the
locker room. It took a little bit, he said with a sly grin, ducking out
before he could be questioned any further.

Nothing more needed to be said, really. Come next Saturday, the final score
will be enough.

Yes, please let me know... she is probably right below us. We aren't in the
chairbacks this year, but we ordered those permanent blue seats for our
spots. They're not terribly comfortable, but at least they keep people from
encroaching on our space. ;-)

I don't get involved in the process because I have the same reservations you
have, Woody. Dave does it all and presents it to me as a fait accompli. He
says he knows numerous people who have bought tix that way, and no one has been
ripped off. He also said to make sure you pay with Paypal and only do business
with someone who has been verified as legitimate by Paypal (because then Paypal
provides a $2000 guarantee). He has bought season tix last year and this year
as well as FL-GA tix for the past three years. So far, so good.
