I want to take exception to what Dan Mullen is complaining about here.
I thought the call was close. I saw the replays and on one of the angles it
looked like he was stripped of the ball before the ball “broke the plane” of
the goal line. However, none of the angles were definitive. The official on
the field looked to be perfectly placed on the field to make the call. I don’t
think the video evidence was definitive. I find it hard to argue that both
officials were “clearly” in error.

Unfortunately, I erased the game so I cannot revisit the replays. I do
remember that the network tried to make it out as a poor call by using some
sort of a composite image, but they could not account for the angle of the
camera. In horseracing, the camera is placed exactly on the finish line. The
cameras were not on the goal line on Saturday. Do any of you that still have
the game recorded think that he was clearly stripped of the ball before
breaking the plane?

SEC officials blasted again after another controversial call benefits
Florida Gators

BY JOSEPH GOODMAN

The Florida Gators have been struggling in the red zone, but that
doesn't mean the team, ranked No. 1 in the country again, can't catch a break
near the goal line.

For the second week in a row, the Gators find themselves in the middle
of an officiating controversy after again coming out on the favorable side of a
judgment call by a Southeastern Conference official that led to a UF score.

On Sunday, Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, UF's former offensive
coordinator, lashed out at SEC officiating after what he believed was an
incorrect call that resulted in a fourth-quarter touchdown for the Gators
during Saturday's 29-19 victory in Starkville, Miss.

On Saturday night at Scott Field, Florida led Mississippi State 22-13
with less than nine minutes to play when UF linebacker Dustin Doe intercepted a
deflected a pass and returned it for a touchdown. Doe, who began celebrating
before he reached the end zone, was stripped at the goal line by Bulldogs
receiver Brandon McRae. McRae recovered the ball in the end zone after a line
judge signaled a Florida touchdown.

After a lengthy review, an SEC replay official upheld the touchdown.
Mullen said he spent early Sunday morning reviewing the play and determined, in
his opinion, that the replay official missed the call.

``There's no excuse for a guy who has the amount of time to replay the
video to make sure they get the call right,'' Mullen said. ``That's why we have
instant replay, and I think it's embarrassing that they blew that call. I've
seen still shots of the ball out of [Doe's] hand. I don't think that's
acceptable on a [replay] guy that has the ability to watch all the different
angles.''

Florida-Georgia winner to get Okefenokee Oar

by Nathan Crabbe http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/author/crabbe/

The winner of this Saturday's Florida-Georgia game will get a wooden oar to
go along with bragging rights.

The University of Florida Student Government announced Wednesday that the
Okefenokee Oar would be presented to the game's winner starting this year,
in the hopes of establishing an annual tradition.

It's just a way to increase the friendly competition in the game, said
Eric Conrad, student government spokesman.

Presenting such a trophy follows in the tradition of other rivarly games
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_college_football_rivalry_games .
The winner of Michigan-Minnesota gets the Little Brown Jug, the winner of
Minnesota-Wisconsin gets Paul Bunyan's Axe and other teams have also
exchanged quirky items in longstanding rivalries.

The oar, which will be presented to the student government president of the
winning university, is carved from a 1,000-year-old cypress tree cut from
the Okefenokee Swamp http://www.fws.gov/okefenokee/ , according to student
government. The swamp straddles the Florida-Georgia border.

The oar is supposed to symbolize the area that has always been fought over
by the states, Conrad said.

  Georgia prediction time
  by Robbie Andreu (Gainesville SUN)

I’ve been going over this all week, and I’ve come up with two very plausible
scenarios for how this game will play out Saturday in Jacksonville.

  Here’s the first one:

Florida’s red-zone woes continue, the Gators turn the ball over a few times
on offense, give up a few plays on defense, and the Bulldogs spring the upset,
dashing UF’s national title hopes. Part of this scenario would include Joe Cox
having all kinds of time to throw and consistently moves the Georgia offense
without the benefit of much of a running game. It also includes the Bulldogs
stuffing UF’s usually reliable running game.

This could happen, but I’m just not feeling it.

What I am feeling is scenario two:

The Gators come out and avoid the red zone altogether by hitting some long
scoring plays early in the game, including a TD bomb from Tim Tebow to Deonte
Thompson. Once the Gators get the early lead, they’ll start playing with
confidence and the red-zone problems will disappear, and then this team will
start playing like everyone thought it would coming into the season.
Defensively, I see UF stifling the Georgia offense by shutting down the run,
then harassing Cox all afternoon. A.J. Green will catch some passes, but the
Florida defense is going to play one of its best games of the season.

This is a Florida team that is loaded with talent but hasn’t played up to its
potential yet. It’s going to happen sometime. The Gators are going to put
together a complete game and the results will be very impressive.

I just have a strong feeling that it’s going to happen in this game.

  Prediction: Florida 34, Georgia 10

I think this is pretty silly. Here in Big Televen country it seems they
give a trophy out for every single regular season game. You get trophies
for winning championships, not for beating rivals. For that you get
scoreboard and a year of bragging rights.

Here is a sampling of the awesome trophies to be had:

Iowa - Minnesota Floyd of Rosedale

Purdue - Indiana Old Oaken Bucket

Florida's Deonte Thompson moves upfield during the first quarter against Mississippi State in Starkville Saturday, October 24, 2009.

The basic concept behind the spread offense is not just about spreading out. It's also about spreading the ball around to make opponents defend the entire field.
Based on the numbers through seven games, the Florida Gators have been less than efficient with the spread-it-around aspect of their offense this season.
Three players have gotten the majority of the touches.
In the running game, quarterback Tim Tebow has 121 carries. That's 11 more than the top two tailbacks (Chris Rainey and Jeff Demps) combined.
In the passing game, tight end Aaron Hernandez and wide receiver Riley Cooper have combined for 60 receptions, while the next four receivers have combined for only 28.
It doesn't add up to spreading the ball around.
"It's not like we're not (trying to spread the ball around). We are," UF coach Urban Meyer said. "We just have to execute it and do it. Absolutely (we want to spread the ball around more)."
In the past, Meyer's spread offense has always been its most efficient when the ball is being distributed to numerous playmakers.
The Gators did an excellent job of spreading the ball around last year in their national championship run.
UF had five players with 57 carries or more, and nine players with double digits in receptions. The distribution made it difficult for teams to just focus on two or three players. Of course, having Percy Harvin in the mix helped create opportunities for the other playmakers.
Without Harvin and wide receiver Louis Murphy in the lineup (both are having an impact in the NFL this fall), the Gators have seemed reluctant to go away from their top three producers — Tebow, Hernandez and Cooper.
But Tebow and offensive coordinator Steve Addazio both say that's not the case.
They say where the ball goes is determined by what the defense is doing in terms of coverages and blitzes.
"(Spreading the ball around) is something we try to do," Tebow said. "So much of that is based on the coverage. We're not going to say, 'We're going to throw to Riley here and D.T. (Thompson) here.' If (the defense) is doing a certain thing, we'll go to Riley. If it's something else, we'll go to D.T. It's hard to game plan that."
Tebow said Cooper turned out to be his go-to receiver in last Saturday's victory over Mississippi State because the Bulldogs were covering him man-to-man most of the night.
"Riley was one-on-one, so he got more catches," Tebow said. "If they had played more cover two (in the secondary), maybe it would have been D.T. and Hernandez getting more of the double looks. That's how the game plan was. It depends on what the defense is doing."
If it's dictated by the defense, then opposing defenses have been directing the ball to UF's top two receivers all season, because Cooper and Hernandez have been the only consistent Tebow targets through seven games.
Despite more disproportionate numbers than a year ago, Addazio said there is no fundamental difference in this offense and last season's.
"We're calling the same plays," Addazio said. "There are no different plays being called. It's the same pass routes, the same combinations. Where the ball goes is based on what the coverage is. I'd like to tell you there's something different, but it's not.
"It's playing that way right now (where Cooper and Hernandez are getting the bulk of the receptions). Certainly, we're real conscious of wanting to utilize everybody we can utilize. So that's gotten a lot of attention. But it's falling that way right now, with no intent, other than Riley Cooper is a hell of a receiver and Aaron Hernandez is a hell of a receiver. But we've got other good receivers, too.
"It's not a conscious thing to say, 'Let's just work with these guys.' Absolutely not."
Even though the Gators seem to be relying on only a few select playmakers, UF continues to lead the SEC in rushing offense and total offense. The offense has been efficient between the 20-yard lines.
"We're doing a lot of good things," Addazio said. "Our play-action (passing) is tremendous, our running is tremendous. Our running game is consistently up there. So, we're moving it well in there. There are a lot of positives."
The negatives have come in the red zone, where the Gators have turned the ball over recently and have scored only two touchdowns in their last 15 trips inside the 20.
The main offensive focus deep in the red zone has been Tebow lining up in the shotgun and running up the middle,

I'll go out on a limband say that we are reverting back to the way things are done in high school football. You have only a couple of good players and all you do is get those 2 or 3 key players involved and they do everything.

Whereas Mullen would probably get on Tebow if he was not spreading it out enough - Addazio is fine with it.

Hello,

I am a lifelong Mississippi State fan and have no strong feelings negative
or otherwise towards Florida.

However, a dear friend of my wife had an encounter with your quarterback
Saturday morning.

She has what could very easily be a terminal brain tumor. She is leaning on
her faith in the Lord to get her through this and no matter the outcome, she
is being extremely positive. She is only 26 and is having to deal with her
own mortality. I can't imagine it is easy.

Anyways, she has a live journal documenting her treatment and everything
involved. She has a list of famous people she would like to meet or talk to
before she dies. These include Oprah, Rick and Bubba, and of course Tim
Tebow.

She is from nearby Columbus, MS and noticed a bunch of charter buses outside
the hotel in town. She thought she would go in and just see if that was the
Gator team. Turns out it was, and she ran into their strength and
conditioning coach in the lobby.

She explained her situation to the coach and even took off her hat to prove
it. She said all she wanted to do was meet Tim. The coach said 'give me five
minutes.' Five minutes later, she was ushered to a small conference room.
When she opened the door, there was college football's golden boy Tim Tebow.

Tim was very glad to meet her. He spent a good fifteen minutes talking to
her about her treatment and her faith in God. I believe he even took a
picture with her.

I say all of this because in this day and age it is amazing that a Heisman
Trophy winner, with two national titles and another possible one on the way,
took time on game day to share a moment with a dear friend of ours who is
dealing with a terrible illness. That is amazing.

You guys have a great team. A great coach and great players everywhere.

Your qb is phenominal and if at all possible this goes to further prove that
he is an even better person.

Gators, you have a good one and I just wanted to share that with you and let
you know how much it meant to our dear friend.

I've been going over this all week, and I've come up with two very plausible

Here's the first one:

Florida's red-zone woes continue, the Gators turn the ball over a few times
on offense, give up a few plays on defense, and the Bulldogs spring the
upset, dashing UF's national title hopes. Part of this scenario would
include Joe Cox having all kinds of time to throw and consistently moves the
Georgia offense without the benefit of much of a running game. It also
includes the Bulldogs stuffing UF's usually reliable running game.

This could happen, but I'm just not feeling it.

What I am feeling is scenario two:

The Gators come out and avoid the red zone altogether by hitting some long
scoring plays early in the game, including a TD bomb from Tim Tebow to
Deonte Thompson. Once the Gators get the early lead, they'll start playing
with confidence and the red-zone problems will disappear, and then this team
will start playing like everyone thought it would coming into the season.
Defensively, I see UF stifling the Georgia offense by shutting down the run,
then harassing Cox all afternoon. A.J. Green will catch some passes, but the
Florida defense is going to play one of its best games of the season.

This is a Florida team that is loaded with talent but hasn't played up to
its potential yet. It's going to happen sometime. The Gators are going to
put together a complete game and the results will be very impressive.

I just have a strong feeling that it's going to happen in this game.

Wisconsin - Minnesota Paul Bunyan's Axe
Michigan - Minnesota Little Brown Jug
Iowa - Minnesota Floyd of Rosedale
Illinois - Northwestern Sweet Sioux Tomahawk
Purdue - Indiana Old Oaken Bucket
Indiana - Michigan State Old Brass Spittoon (nice!)
Iowa - Wisconsin Heartland Trophy
Michigan - Michigan State Paul Bunyan Trophy
Illinois - Ohio State Illibuck
Illinois - Purdue Purdue Cannon

om-moving-to-atlanta/ kept Florida-Georgia from moving to Atlanta

by Nathan Crabbe http://chalkboard.blogs.gainesville.com/author/crabbe/
(Gainesville SUN)

Atlanta officials made a push to lure the Florida-Georgia game from
Jacksonville, but were apparently thwarted by new perks given to the school
up north.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports
http://www.ajc.com/sports/uga/how-jacksonville-kept-the-178006.html that
the president of the Atlanta Sports Council lobbied Georgia's athletic
director to move one game out of four to the Georgia Dome and leave the
others in Jacksonville. But the city of Jacksonville responded with new
perks that will keep the game there through at least 2016.

I certainly understand why they'd want it: This game produces tremendous
exposure and economic impact, Jacksonville Mayor John Peyton told the
paper. But I never viewed [Atlanta's interest] as a serious threat.

To make up for the extra travel costs incurred by the Georgia team,
Jacksonville will start paying next year for three private 50-seat planes to
fly the Bulldogs directly from Athens to St. Augustine and back after the
game. The value of the perk is estimated at about $120,000 per year,
according to the paper.

Other reported changes to the contract include Jacksonville reimbursing each
school $50,000 toward the costs of hotels and meals, boosting each school's
parking allotment to 1,500 from 1,000 spaces and giving the schools more of
the proceeds from marketing rights.

[gatortalk] Re: [gatornews] [Jacksonville.com] Florida Gators' Strong should be a head coach

2009-10-30 Thread Helen Huntley
fyi-there's a headline on ESPN.com about a rumor about Charlie Strong as
coach of UGA. You have to be a subscriber to see the story

On Thu, Oct 29, 2009 at 4:07 PM, Badrish Davanagere dbadr...@gmail.comwrote:

Florida Gators' Strong should be a head coach

- By Gene Frenette http://jacksonville.com/authors/gene_frenette
- Story updated at 6:34 AM on Thursday, Oct. 29, 2009

If Georgia and everybody else in the Southeastern Conference is looking for
a way to cut into Florida's league dominance of the past four seasons, maybe
they should begin lobbying football programs with potential head coach
openings to promote the most overlooked coordinator in the country.

You want a better shot at knocking off the Gators? Then start networking to
get Charlie Strong out of Gainesville. Put the word out that Florida's
defensive coordinator has been bypassed long enough.

Because frankly, the longer Strong is allowed to keep recruiting and
developing players for the Gators, the more likely coach Urban Meyer might
have a Spurrier-esque dominance in the SEC. Meyer's spread offense gets the
headlines, but the element most responsible for UF's championship success is
 Strong's defenses.

Remember what Bob Stoops did for Florida as its defensive coordinator from
1996-98, finishing in the top 20 in total defense each of those years? That
landed him a plum head coaching job at Oklahoma at age 38.

But here's Strong, 49, the architect of the nation's current No. 1-ranked
defense and coordinator on units that were the foundation of two UF national
title teams (2006, '08), still waiting for that call-up.

You want to know why LSU, Arkansas and Mississippi State couldn't beat
Florida despite so much ineptitude and generosity from Meyer's offense?
Because the players Strong is responsible for molding into a stout defense
 put opponents on lockdown.

On Saturday at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium, it'll be Georgia's turn to
figure out how to find cracks in Strong's defense, which is elite in every
significant category - total defense (No. 1), scoring defense (No. 2),
rushing defense (No. 12), passing defense (No. 2) and third-down percentage
 (No. 2).

It begs this question: Why has Strong not landed a Football Bowl
Subdivision head coaching gig, or worse, never been offered one?

Contrary to common speculation, not every successful African-American
coordinator who fails to ascend is the victim of racial discrimination,
though the numbers (seven black head coaches among 120 FBS schools) are
deplorable. Some well-qualified white coordinators have also been denied a
 promotion.

But in Strong's case, he isn't just a successful coordinator who happens to
be black. The boss of UF's defense has arguably the most impressive
college resume of any coordinator out there.

So why have other ex-UF coordinators like Stoops, Ron Zook, Larry Fedora
and Dan Mullen landed head coaching jobs, all with great or respectable
programs? Yet Strong has been rejected by, among others, Minnesota,
 California, Vanderbilt and Georgia Tech?

This past offseason, as another hiring cycle passed, Strong publicly
wondered if schools might take issue with him having a white wife. That's
all speculation. Who knows why Charlie Strong, who received no raise from
his $310,000 salary despite holding Oklahoma's high-powered offense to 14
points in the national title game, can't get a head coaching job?

What I do know is, as long as Strong is running the Florida defense, Urban

Florida-Georgia winner to get Okefenokee Oar

 (Gainesville SUN)

The winner of this Saturday's Florida-Georgia game will get a wooden oar
 to
 go along with bragging rights.

The University of Florida Student Government announced Wednesday that the
Okefenokee Oar would be presented to the game's winner starting this
 year,

in the hopes of establishing an annual tradition.

It's just a way to increase the friendly competition in the game, said
 Eric Conrad, student government spokesman.

Presenting such a trophy follows in the tradition of other rivarly games
 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_NCAA_college_football_rivalry_games
 .

The winner of Michigan-Minnesota gets the Little Brown Jug, the winner of
Minnesota-Wisconsin gets Paul Bunyan's Axe and other teams have also
exchanged quirky items in longstanding rivalries.

The oar, which will be presented to the student government president of
 the
winning university, is carved from a 1,000-year-old cypress tree cut from
the Okefenokee Swamp http://www.fws.gov/okefenokee/ , according to
 student

government. The swamp straddles the Florida-Georgia border.

The oar is supposed to symbolize the area that has always been fought
 over
 by the states, Conrad said.
